Wildlife Rescue Needs a New Set of Wheels!

$655 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 11 people in 22 days

Nature's Edge Wildlife and Reptile Rescue is in desperate need of a new vehicle. To say we put a vehicle through it's paces is an understatement. The Suburban we have now is a 2005 and has over 230,000 miles on it. The repairs are beyond starting to exceed the value, and will cost too much to make it pass Texas vehicle inspection. We use 4 wheel drive on a regular basis, haul stuff (including a trailer), travel to education and adoption events, picking up supplies and animals, and let's not forget the occasional use as an emergency ladder to get birds out of trees.

Last year we drove more than 13,000 miles picking up animals, supplies, traveling to education programs, reptile expos, etc. About 10,000 miles consisted of transporting animals, over 2,000 miles were driven traveling to education programs and almost 700 miles driven to reptile expos. And that doesn't even count all the miles driven to and from our vet's office and that is a 67 mile trip.

We made three trips down to the coast after Hurricane Harvey in August 2017 to pick up wildlife and deliver needed supplies to wildlife rehabilitators. We have driven as far as New Mexico to pick up animals in need. We drove to Tyler to pick up a western ratsnake that had swallowed ceramic eggs. We also drove to Kansas one year to meet a college professor that adopted several reptiles for use as education animals.

A reliable vehicle is necessary to help us continue caring for animals in need. Please consider helping us purchase a new used vehicle.

More information about Natures Edge Wildlife and Reptile Rescue: NEWRR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit wildlife rehabilitation facility and reptile rescue. We are state and federally permitted wildlife rehabilitators. We rehab all native reptiles, bats, birds of prey and mammals, on a limited basis. We are also an exotic reptile rescue and will take in all unwanted pet reptiles and amphibians. All animals that come into our care will receive necessary veterinarian care, treatment, behavior conditioning, etc. Once an animal is deemed healthy and adoptable, it will be placed up for adoption. All potential adopters must show knowledge of species, including proper housing, food, etc., before animals can be adopted. Nature's Edge Wildlife and Reptile Rescue also conducts educational programs in the DFW area, primarily on reptiles and/or birds of prey. We focus on wildlife conservation, life history, habitat, adaptations and identification. We also provide information on minimizing human wildlife conflicts. Nature's Edge Wildlife and Reptile Rescue does not receive any state or federal funding. We rely solely on tax-deductible donations from the public.

We just wanted to thank everyone that has donated so far! We also wanted to share a few more pictures and stories. The first picture below is of a young deer that wandered into someone's yard and was all cut up, dirty and, unfortunately, very friendly. Brandi had to drive over an hour away to pick up the deer as the finders did not have transportation. We assume she had been kept and raised illegally and somehow escaped from the yard/pen she was being kept in. With her gaping wounds, we wanted to get her immediate care from a seasoned deer rehabber, so we made the trip all the way to Kaufman that evening. At last check, she was healed and had been put out with other deer to hopefully wild back up and be a deer to be released later in the year.

The second photo is a black vulture we drove over 250 miles to pick up from another rehabilitator. Unfortunately this vulture is imprinted to humans and will never be able to be released to the wild. He will be placed as an education animal.

The last photo is our setup for transporting Darwin, our 130+ pound sulcata tortoise, to education events. We have him in a 5 foot round cattle trough that we transport in the trailer.

Any and all donations will be put toward the purchase of a new (used) vehicle for the rescue. We appreciate each and every one of you for your support of NEWRR!
