On September 29th, my 79-year-old grandfather, Werner, a local Knoxville Zumba-enthusiast, was brutally attacked on his Saturday morning walk. He’s walked the Ten Mile Greenway every Saturday for the last fifteen years after his breakfast ritual at Panera.
The attacker jumped out from behind and stabbed him multiple times in the head, neck, and face. While trying to protect himself, he also sustained injuries on his hands. Thankfully, a jogger found him lying unconscious on the Greenway and contacted 9-1-1 –who transported him to UT Trauma center.
After hundreds of facial stitches, a broken finger/hand, and 30+ staples in his head during the longest day of his life, he was discharged to recover at home. He will undergo surgery on Thursday, October 4 due to hand injuries. Recovery (both emotionally and physically) will be a long journey, but along with the rest of our family and circle of friends, he’s grateful to be alive. We’re all so thankful for the outpouring of love from the community – including friends in Knoxville, and where he’s initially from in Connecticut. From meals to cards and deliveries, we’re deeply appreciative of the support. Because so many wanted to donate, this page can serve as a place to help Werner and his wife Philomena cover medical bills and associated expenses during his convalescence.
The Bossinger/Stierle/Glintenkamp families would like to thank everyone kind enough to request this page.

I wanted to reach out and extend an invitation to all of Werner's friends and family that are in the Knoxville area.
Werner turns 80 years old on December 13th, and we are going to celebrate!
On Thursday, Dec. 13th from 5:00 - 7:30 PM, we are hosting a party at Tennessee Tap House. Please feel free to stop by any time during those hours and enjoy a drink and appetizer on us!
If you know Werner, you know how much "face time" and some good ole social time means to him. Please help us make this a special birthday he will always remember!
Since his scary event, he has been even more grateful for his friends and family than ever before. I know he would love to see many of you and thank you for your support through that time.
To help us plan for how many people may plan to stop by -- please RSVP to my mother, Susan (Werner's daughter), by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Or if you already have her cell phone or mine, feel free to text or call us!
Just let us know if you (and anyone else with you) will be swinging by!
Thank you all so much again for your support.
Please let our families thank you in person and share some quality time with Werner on this day. :)
All the best,
Meghan Glintenkamp (Werner's granddaughter)
Tonight we had family dinner and grandpa wanted me to send out another message!
He said: “Thank you all SO MUCH for your kind words, thoughts, and prayers. I’m blown away by the contributions to help cover medical expenses. I am amazed at the generosity of all my friends, family, and even perfect strangers!“
He said he felt overwhelmed by not being able to personally thank each of you. It’s hard for him to to wrap his mind around all the different names and such, but loves to hear each one! Your messages keep him strong!
Sending so much love and appreciation to you ALL today! The amount of support (in all ways) has been astounding and I believe it’s a huge testament to my grandpa Werner’s character. So many of you call him “friend”, and his family is so grateful that you do.
This morning Werner had surgery to repair his broken finger. It was much more damaged than anticipated, but nonetheless the surgery “went very well”. The staff all commented how strong he is! He is currently resting at home now.
By this evening, all of Werner’s kids will be together with him! This has made his recovery process much easier.
While he has his ups and downs, with both emotional and physical discomforts, overall he has handled this like a champ! He literally never complains and is itching to get out of the house and return to his daily routine.
He already wants to go back to the gym, Church, and even still wants his Saturday morning Panera...
I wanted to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to Mr. Jason - the man who found my grandpa and called for help. He is truly a hero and the reason Werner received care before it was too late. We have heard he is running the Chicago marathon this weekend & we wish him the best of luck! Endless thanks to you, hero Jason!
Thank you all again for your continued support. Your calls, messages, and donations are so deeply appreciated. Werner and Philomena send their heartfelt thanks.
Wishing Good Favor Upon You All,
Meghan & Werner’s family
WOW. No words to express our fullest gratitude. I want to individually thank each and every single one of you, and I hope to eventually accomplish that.
Over $7,000 in one day is BEYOND unreal. I am shocked, but in a way not surprised to learn how far and wide Grandpa's impact has reached. Many of you are his friends - gym buddies (WOW National Fitness Center), church friends (He LOVES All Saints!!), longtime friends both from Connecticut, Tennessee, and more, and dear family.
Some of you have never even met him. Some of you are friends of mine (I'm eternally grateful) or his children/in-laws, or even just those that have come across this link on social media.
The compassion and generosity many of you have for a total stranger is amazing.
Many people have asked about providing meals. So many lovely people have stepped up so he and my grandma Philomena have meals for days!
These donations will go DIRECTLY toward the upcoming medical expenses, surgeries, and will help them maintain daily living expenses while Grandpa recovers.
Currently, his daughter Monica has flown in town to stay with Werner & Philomena. My family (his daughter Susan) is here in Knoxville and takes turns visiting throughout the day. His son, Christopher, and Chris's son, Michael, fly in on Friday from Connecticut. His other son, Werner Jr., will be in Thursday from California. All of his children will be here with him! What a blessing.
Tonight, he was visited by 3 wonderful ladies representing the National Fitness Center community. They've done so much fundraising of their own it's hard to wrap our minds around. I will try to send a video of his response later.
He is healing so well already and has made HUGE improvements since he and I got home on Saturday night. The love has powered his recovery.
Today he made my mother take him to see his lawn care clients and to the church to be sure others would be able to assist cleaning. It's nearly impossible to keep him in the house and make him rest.
To wrap this up, THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts. Werner could hardly fully comprehend the magnitude of this outpouring of love and support. He was honestly just amazed it was "in the newspaper" (much less on the news, TV, internet, etc).
We love you all. From close friends to perfect strangers, he loves you. He obviously is a special man whom God favors and has more wonderful plans for. We continue to pray for him (and his surgery on Thursday) and pray for all of you generous souls in hopes that fortune repays you.
His granddaughter Meghan & our entire family.
