My 6 year old nephew, Gustavo, is a happy and loving Kindergartener who loves Monopoly money, LEGOs, his soccer team, playing Uno and a good bowl of Puerto Rican oatmeal (avena)!

A month ago, Gustavo was diagnosed with severe heart failure. He has been in and out of hospitals in Puerto Rico and has been so strong and resilient throughout this period. However, his parents (Diana & Jose) have just been told that the hospitals in Puerto Rico can no longer provide the care he needs. He is a possible candidate for a heart transplant and must come to the U.S. as soon as possible.

The family will be traveling from Puerto Rico to the continental US in the coming days. This has all been a whirlwind decision that has been made with much consideration and prayer. While I am (selfishly) so thankful that they will be in close proximity to me, there are a lot of expenses that they will be incurring while Gustavo is treated here. The length of the journey is unknown, but we know there will be travel expenses, hotel stays, food, medical care and rehabilitation.

They also have a precocious and radiant 8 year old daughter, Natalia, who will mostly stay behind in Puerto Rico with grandparents. Gustavo’s best medicine has been daily visits from his sister and we would like to have Natalia visit occasionally to see her baby brother when her schedule allows.

We want for Diana and Jose to be able to focus on Gustavo’s care without having to worry about the inevitable financial burden.

Any amount donation would be received with love and appreciation as my “familia” surrounds Diana & Jose with love and support during this unthinkable time.

I have set up the goal at $25,000 for this first phase of immediate expenses. I will continue to give updates on the situation on this page and adjust the goal if needed based on Gustavo’s needs and length of treatment - which is currently TBD. Please feel free to share!
