We Carry Kevan: China

If we are creative and courageous, the world becomes accessible.

Two years ago, my friends and I decided to backpack through Europe. The catch? I was the backpack. I typically rely on a wheelchair to get around, and our plans were not exactly conducive to that. So, we left my wheelchair at the airport and the guys carried me for three weeks in a specially designed backpack. We hiked the English countryside, climbed the island of Skellig Michael, and explored Paris from one end to the other.

It was an amazing experience, and we've since had the joy of sharing our story to inspire and challenge audiences all over the world. We've also started a nonprofit called We Carry Kevan, to provide backpacks and help others find ways to have similar experiences, both locally and abroad.

Now, we are ready to explore another part of the wide world -- China. We are excited to join with Show Hope on this adventure. Show Hope is an organization that serves orphans with disabilities, with care centers set up throughout China. Our aim with visiting these care centers is to deliver our custom Deuter backpacks for their use, and to be an encouragement to the children, as well as the staff and their surrounding communities. In meeting with these kids and their caregivers, we hope to demonstrate that life is full of possibility and hope. We all have limitations, but through creativity, courage, and community, we can move beyond those limitations and embrace our full potential. As we travel between centers, we will also take this opportunity to see such historic sights as the Shaolin Temple, the Forbidden City, and the Great Wall.

But we need your help to make this happen, by giving financially to the endeavor and raising awareness with us. Join us, too, by following along on social media. We want you to be part of the experience, part of the story. You are invited to help "carry Kevan" and in doing so, carry so many more.

We will be visiting Guilin, Luoyang, and Beijing.

I had the honor of contributing this week to the blog over at The Rabbit Room. These guys have been dear friends for a long time and great supporters of We Carry Kevan from the very beginning. If you haven't checked out their community, here's an easy intro! Catch up on our story and then wandering around the rest of the website for a bit. You'll find yourself returning again and again for more...

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to put our visa applications into the mailbox! We're still about $6,000 of buying our plane tickets at the end of this month. If you're able to help with this, we'd really appreciate it. Thanks, everyone!

Our special feature team member this week is Mr. Danny Tenney!
Before I moved to Fort Wayne four years ago, I used to come up and stay with Danny's brother Joe. So when I met Danny last year, we hit it off right away. It was either the familial connection or the fish tacos we were eating, but we've been inseparable since.
These days, Danny and his family are my neighbors. He gets me up and showered 1-2 mornings each week, and then we hang out the other days, making smoothies or watching movies. He keeps me healthy in stomach, body, and heart. Like Robbie on our last trip, Danny has a medical background, plus he's just an amazing friend. I am thrilled out of my mind to have him on this next trip!

We are still working on our accommodations for Beijing, although several options are coming together. We'll have something more to share, I think, by the end of this week. It has been so encouraging to see folks come around and help us figure this thing out. Thank you for being such an integral part of this process!

In the meantime, let me tell you about another member of our team. You might remember Ben Duvall from our trip to Europe. But if you've seen me speak in the past year or been around me in Fort Wayne, you've most likely seen him then too.
Ben is my roommate, one of my best friends, and my go-to travel buddy. He handles logistics like a boss and is an amazing caregiver. It's one of those situations where I can probably survive on the road without him, but I'd rather not test that theory. He's a faithful brother with the resolve of a workhorse. If he has a responsibility, nothing will keep him from fulfilling it. Eat your heart out, Jason Bourne! To top it all off, he's a goofball and has pretty good taste in music too.
Above all else, though, Ben has a way of keeping me focused on what really matters. He asks questions like, "Why are we here," and reminds me how to love humbly those we come in contact with on our travels.
I'm so thankful for this guy and grateful to have him on board for this trip to China. By the way, going to China was originally his idea, actually! So, props to Ben for the suggestion and inspiration to see it through.

And we're thankful for you guys, too, for your continued support. Please keep spreading the word with us and, if you're able to give, we do appreciate it. Thanks!
