Webster Elementary Needs Our Help

Donation protected
The students of Lower Merion High School heard about and have adopted Webster Elementary School as their school-wide service project.  The students are committed to raising at least $20,000.  When they heard that Webster did not have Science or Social Studies textbooks or even enough basic materials to support their struggling learners appropriately, they knew they had to do something to help.  LM students created this Lip Dub to benefit Webster; all proceeds will go to the Webster Elementary School.

The School District of Philadelphia provides each school with a budget determined by predicted student enrollment for the upcoming school year. This budget is often minimal and forces principals to decide whether they want to hire staff or purchase educational materials. In an effort to eliminate high classroom numbers as well as to provide more opportunities for small group learning, the Webster leadership team agrees to prioritize hiring  staff.  This then forces those staff members to use their own money to purchase many necessary supplies for their classroom. The School District of Philadelphia provides teachers with a $100 allotment every year; most teachers spend at least $500 of their own money over the course of a school year.

John H. Webster Elementary School is located in Kensington, a community in East Philadelphia. This neighborhood has the highest number of drug-related juvenile arrests as well as the largest number of Child Protective Services’ cases in the city. Many of Websters' 1,000 students are currently in out-of-home placements, such as foster care or residential facilities. Some of their students are suffering from lead poisoning or parental drug and alcohol abuse acquired during pregnancy.   All of these factors combine to increase the challenges that both students and teachers face on a daily basis at Webster. Despite these challenges, a hard working team of 55 teachers educates students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade.

The leadership team at Webster plans on using the funds collected to purchase the following:

•Weekly Readers from Scholastic and Time Magazine to function as Science and Social Studies curriculum.
•High interest, low-level nonfiction books to be used for guided reading and small group literacy instruction in order to help raise students' reading levels.
•All necessary materials that will be used to supplement the educational needs of Webster students.
•Webster also could use company funding to purchase student uniforms, underwear, coats, and school bags.
•Supplemental technology needs.

Thank you for your support and all you will do for the Webster community.
