Help our children to have fun and educational summer camps

When one of EduMais's 8-year-old pupils, Alan, (see the photo of our soccer boys; Alan is the first boy on the right) spontaneously shared his dreams for a better Brazil, one thing stood out above all else: more opportunities for education and learning.

Building on the success of EduMais's English Summer Camp of the last two years, we are planning to launch two additional Summer Camp Programs (Soccer and Programming) this coming holiday season to support Alan's dream during the long, hot, and humid summer months in Rio de Janeiro.

Holiday Season in the favela

During the holiday season, the youth of Rio's favelas (informal settlements) don’t have much to occupy themselves with. Very often they are stuck in their little, poorly ventilated houses while their parents (when the children are fortunate enough to have both) are out all day working hard to make ends meet. The consequent boredom and lack of attention leave these young people in a vulnerable state: at best, the academic and behavioral gains made during the school year deteriorate; at worst, they can get mixed up in trouble on the streets, or even recruited into drug trafficking gangs.

EduMais is proud to offer Summer Camp Programs to support these at-risk children and teenagers during the school holidays. We want to serve their needs by providing a safe and fun place where – in addition to working on their English, Soccer and Programming skills – they can learn sustainable life lessons like responsibility, respect, self-discipline, accountability, and teamwork to put them on the road to success.

Three different camps

This upcoming summer season we will have:
- English Summer Camp,
- New Soccer Summer Camp,
- New Programming Summer Camp.

How our Summer Camps Work?
EduMais's Summer Camp provide underprivileged and vulnerable children in Rio's favelas with an opportunity to have fun and to connect, to develop and to evolve, on summer afternoons filled with learning, physical activity, and healthy food options.

Activities are a blend of academic, creative and social elements, to offer the kids an engaging and enjoyable learning environment.

The children will be surrounded by many volunteers of different nationalities, bringing the global world into their community. More relaxed than school, a camp-like culture promotes a sense of community and camaraderie, strengthening the emotional bonds already existent between our students and volunteers. Our children very often suffer from a lack of connection and attention, yet dedicated attention is exactly what they will receive at our Summer Camps.

Goals of Summer Camp Programs include:
- Reducing summer loss not only in academic but also in social and emotional learning.
- Further developing the children's education by offering them the chance to explore new skills, like programming.
- Providing opportunities for physical activity and healthy eating.
- Focusing on the community /community involvement skills.

Fundraising
To help raise the funds necessary for the Educational Summer Camps to take place, members of the EduMais family are running the Rio half marathon on the 9th of December 2018.
Who are the team members? Amit from the UK, Daan from The Netherlands , Ed from the UK, Hannah from the US and Diana from The Netherlands.

Rio will be oppressively hot and humid then, making the event especially challenging, though still nothing compared to the circumstances in which our children and students live.

Donate today to help our dedicated volunteers bring even more smiles to the faces of underprivileged children!

Sharing is caring
Please also share EduMais’s goal with your friends, families, and colleagues, and if you're in Rio at the time come along to encourage and cheer on our courageous volunteers.
