A thank you from Gerry:

Brady, Marg and I would like to thank all those who have been so generous with their donations and well wishes.  Your thoughts and comments have been heartening in a time of great duress.  Brady had a major operation this week to start the recovery process and he responded well.  He will now be entering a lengthy rehab period.

Gerry James is a former Winnipeg’er, Hall of Fame Blue Bomber and the Winnipeg Blue Bomber Alumni (WBBA) want to help him. Here’s why….

Gerry’s son is in the hospital suffering from a serious infection that will require skin replacement surgery.  Currently Gerry is living on Vancouver Island and is making the trip to be with his son several times every week.  This has placed a huge financial strain on Gerry and his wife.  In order to help offset the costs, Gerry was looking to auction some of his most prized possessions…his coveted Ring of Honour Jersey, his Toronto Maple Leafs Jersey and Grey Cup Ring.  In Gerry’s words, “A jersey is just a jersey – my son’s life is a little more important than that.”

This is where the WBBA need your help. The Winnipeg Blue Bomber Alumni are hoping to raise $10,000 to help offset the travel costs that Gerry and his wife are incurring every week.  Please donate today!

Gerry James was a product of Kelvin High School, James, nicknamed ‘Kid Dynamite’ as his father Eddie ‘Dynamite’ also played for Winnipeg – was wearing a Bomber uniform when he was just 17.  Four years after that, he made his National Hockey League debut as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.  That ability to shine in both hockey and football made him one of the greatest athletes in Canadian History.

James play 11 years for the Bombers, leading them in scoring in three years and in rushing in three seasons.  He still ranks fourth on the club’s all-time touchdown list behind only Milt Stegall, Charles Roberts and Leo Lewis, and fifth on the all-time scoring list after Troy Westwood, Trevor Kennerd, Stegall and Bernie Ruoff.

James was a member of four Grey Cup championship teams in 1958, 1959, 1961 and 1962 and was the first winner of the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian Award in 1954 and then again in 1957 – the year he set a CFL record with 18 rushing touchdowns.
