GREAT NEWS!!!- WE'VE REACHED OUR GOAL ~ THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!

With your amazing support we will now be able to-  bring potable water filters to all 94 Mayan families in the village of Tunuco Abajo, build 2 water catchments and also provide 340 children in the villages of Tunuco Abajo and Oquen with much needed schools supplies.  Because we have surpassed our goal we are grateful to have some funds available in order to provide necessary additional equipment and filters.

We will be travelling to Guatemala at the end of this January and will be reporting back to all of our generous donors in order to let you know the impact, that easier access to clean drinking water, will have in improving the lives of these villagers.

Thanks again for all the fantastic help!

- Nelson High School Interact Club and Rotary Burlington North

Hi there!

Great news!!  Response to our campaign so far has been overwhelming.

Because our initial goal to help 35 families has almost been met, we are now  in a position to help the remaining families of Tunuco Abajo.  We have amended our target in the hope that, with your help, we can reach this new goal. Thank you so much for your support!

Nelson High School's Interact club is a group of students who have a passion for making a difference in our community and around the world.  We have been working closely with The Rotary Club of Burlington North Foundation Inc. in order to do just that!

Over the past several years, with the help of Rotary Burlington North Foundation, and the very generous donations from people just like you, we have been making a real difference in the lives of the people of two remote Guatemalan villages. We want to continue to help these villagers and have found a novel way to get them clean water.

This year our initial goal is to raise $5,250 to provide simple, effective water filters to  35 families in the Mayan "Chorti" village of Tunuco Abajo, giving them access to clean drinking water. Each filter costs only $75 and can be used by a family for up to 10 years.  Also by using a rain-water catchment to capture water, they can avoid the daily 45 minute hike, with heavy containers, through the mountains to get to a clean stream of water.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Note 1:
GoFundMe.... no longer charges a platform fee for the use of its services.

As a way to be compensated for the use of their services GoFundme has instead included an “option” to add a percentage "Tip"  or a specific  dollar amount by selecting "Other" and entering that specific dollar amount.

If you do not wish to add a "Tip" simply select "Other" and enter "0" dollars.

Note 2:

A tax receipt will be provided for all eligible donations of $30 or more.  A donation of $75 changes a family's life!  Honestly any amount donated will be greatly appreciated and will make a huge difference!

We believe that access to safe, clean drinking water should be a basic human right !

It is hard to believe that something so simple can - and will -  make a world of difference to a family in need.

The Sawyer Water Filter will make that difference!

When Rotary Burlington North,  Rotarios Chiquimula de La Sierra” and NGO partners such as Project Harvest and The Doppenbergs first visited the Mayan "Chorti" villages of  such as Oquen and Tunuco Abajo, they found that the people were amongst the most marginalized in an already impoverished country.

• 82% lived in poverty.
• 50% of children were malnourished.
• There was no steady work, no social connection, no electricity/lighting/heating or clean running water.
• Most children would not have education beyond grade 6, as there is no extra money for higher education

So, why a Sawyer Water Filter?

This year we want to help provide clean drinking water for the village of Tunuco Abajo which will not have permanent access to water for some years

There are many advantages:

PROVEN EFFECTIVE:
This filter is already proven and field tested as being effective and reliable. It is currently in use in a number of nearby villages.

SAVES TIME:
Women and young girls typically walk from 45 mins to 1 hour, each way, in order to collect clean drinking water each day.

SAVES MONEY:
Fewer trips to the clinic, less time missing work or school

HEALTH:
No more stomach aches and diarrhea.
A family of 5 requires a minimum of 6 litres of clean water/day just for drinking water.
They also need clean water for cooking, cleaning and personal hygiene.

NUTRITION:
The Value of Food Increases by 40 %- Further improving the value of the food they can now produce for themselves in the gardens.

COST EFFICIENT WATER FILTER:
Filter is capable of filtering 5 gallons (18.55 Litres) of clean water every hour with only gravity

EASY MAINTENANCE:
Very simple way to back flush the filter to keep clean

LONG LASTING:
Filter can last many years and can filter up to 400,000 litres in its lifetime which means they will have
enough for:  drinking, cooking, cleaning and bathing.

MEETS AND EXCEEDS EPA (Environmental Protection Act) standards:
Removes 99.9999 % Bacteria and Protozoa.

These filters are an effective solution for our Guatemalan friends. They are simple to use, durable and cost just $75 dollars each (including the food grade water bucket).

They will provide enough clean water for a families: drinking, cooking, washing and bathing needs for many years.

.........This will make a difference!

What have we done, so far?

Over the past 4 years we’ve been helping to provide sustainable solutions:

Vegetable Gardens.  Working  along with  the NGO-Project Harvest  many villagers now have gardens which allow them to not only feed their families, but which  also produce  excess produce which can be sold to others, creating an income they didn’t’ previously have.

Latrines: We’ve helped families in the area by building hundreds of latrines which has improved –both sanitation and feelings of self-worth/dignity.

Solar Lighting:  Has reduced the need to rely on expensive candles and kerosene which provided poor lighting for work and study and produced harmful gases in their homes.

School Supplies: We have provided each year school supplies for the 340 children of these two villages; providing, pens, pencils, notebooks, reading material etc. (Something they would otherwise go without.

We are very fortunate to be living in Canada, but we realize that not everyone has as many advantages.

We want to make a difference in the world

We're crowd funding this worthy cause and we need your help.

Even a small donation can go far because 100% of it will go towards purchasing the filters and supplies.
