Historical Society of Baltimore County Water/Ways

Please support our effort to bring meaningful, relevant, and family-oriented cultural attractions to Baltimore County.  Our expenses for this event will be more than $20,000 above our annual budgeted costs. The expenses will include local history exhibit costs, building maintenance and new signage, mass mailings and related promotion, special member and sponsor events, event programs, and more. Only by raising funds through generous donors will we be able to deliver a high-quality and fun event for visitors from Maryland and beyond.

The Historical Society of Baltimore County (HSBC) will be the first of six Maryland sites to host Water/Ways, a traveling Smithsonian Institution exhibition, brought to the state by the Maryland Humanities’ Museum on Main Street program. Water/Ways will be open to the public in the historic Almshouse in Cockeysville for six weeks, from May 25 to July 6, 2019, during HSBC’s 60th anniversary year

The Water/Ways exhibition dives into water, exploring water’s effect on the landscape, settlement and migration, and its impact on culture and spirituality. The Maryland tour showcases the state’s unique water stories and history in locally-generated work.

HSBC and more than 30 local partners will host public programs, develop complementary exhibits, and facilitate educational initiatives to raise people’s understanding of what water means to our community. Our diverse partners range from non-profit, commercial, and government organizations, spanning arts, culture, recreation, and environmental domains, such as Blue Water Baltimore, Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, Lansdowne High school, Fire Museum of Maryland, Baltimore County Public Schools Office of Music & Dance Education, Cromwell Valley Park Council, Patapsco Heritage Greenway, Gunpowder Falls State Park, and Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability.

HSBC’s water-themed exhibits will examine the historical context of our region’s interactions with water, share community stories, and describe the relevance of our past actions to our lives today. We are developing exhibits to showcase our region’s history with water, built around three themes: harnessing the power of water for the growth of communities and commerce; engineering the landscape to meet current and future water needs; balancing our growth needs with our natural resources for a healthy and sustainable future.

Your donation will help us to defray the expenses of bringing the Smithsonian exhibit and related events to our region. Your donation will also support the development of new permanent exhibit content to describe the local historical record of our community’s relationship with our water resources and the significance to our lives today.

HSBC is a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3). More information about this event can be found at www.hsobc.org/waterways
