Warren Easton's Cuba Exchange

Warren Easton’s Jazz Band is going to Cuba!

Why?
In May 2016 Warren Easton students will travel to Santiago de Cuba for a week-long arts and music intensive at the Conservatorio de Esteban Salas to begin a three-year exchange program. Both groups of students will explore how their cultures are connected and how they can shape the future of their respective homes, both facing unprecedented change.
What is the money for? Travel and documentary costs over three years. All donations are tax deductible for this unique educational project.

Who We Are
Warren Easton Charter High School is a leader in the education community of New Orleans, an open admissions school with a 100% graduation rate for the past five years. The oldest public high school in Louisiana, we were founded to serve the children of the working class, and we proudly remain true to that mission today.
CubaNOLA Arts Collective is a collective of artists, tradition bearers, educators, scholars, students and everyday people that explore the shared histories and lifestyles of New Orleans, Louisiana, Cuba, the Caribbean and Latin America. We produce concerts, exhibits, documentaries, readings, workshops, community maps, exchanges, cultural heritage tours and more.

About the Project
The children of New Orleans and of Cuba both are facing a future of great change from what they’ve known to this point. As they look to shape that future, the traditions of music and art that have so informed their past can be powerful tools as they navigate what's in store.

• May 2016: Easton students travel to Santiago de Cuba for a week long music and visual arts intensive
• April 2017: Cuban students will travel to New Orleans to perform and create local art installations with Warren Easton students
• July 2017: Easton students return to Santiago de Cuba to perform for the 2017 Festival del Caribe dedicated to New Orleans
• 2018: Warren Easton students will create performances and exhibits celebrating New Orleans’ Tricentennial and honoring the cultural contributions they’ve explored

Why Give?
This program will allow students of limited means to travel, which is a life-changing experience. Most students in New Orleans have never even left the state, much less the country. The same goes for the Cuban children, and we hope their trip to New Orleans will open their worlds as much as possible. For both groups of students, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see that their future need not be limited to what their past has shown them.

When to Give
Soon! We are facing our final deadline of April 10, so please give today!
