Book Buddies

This year's donations are in memory of Mitchell Brownlee, who loved to read. I am Athena Cole. I am a Senior  at Thomas Downey High School. I have always enjoyed reading and after volunteering in my mom's classroom, I have realized that not everyone has books to read at home. So I created Book Buddies. Book Buddies is a non profit organization spreading literacy. Burbank Elementary is the first school this organization has adopted and will be adopted for a second year now. Burbank is a low socio-economic school. It has about 700 students enrolled and 75% of their third graders are reading below grade level. Many of these students have limited amounts of access to literacy. I believe that if the love of reading starts earlier in these kids' lives that these numbers will drop. The goal is to provide a number of students with a fun book of their reading level and a stuffed animal to read with. Not every child has someone to read to, but having a stuffed animal will fulfill this need. Any donations will be used to buy new or lightly used books and stuffed animals. My goal is to be able to support the whole school with this act and with your help that can become possible.
