Hello, family and friends, and anyone in between! My name is Bailey Shaver. I am currently a third-year student at Western Michigan University studying English, creative writing, and film and media studies (Yeah, I don't sleep much). I am currently enrolled in ENGL 2790: Introduction to English Education, and our class has been invited to the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) conference in St. Louis, Missouri. This conference runs from November 16-19, and will be comprised of various presentations, breakout sessions, and special guest lectures, all on the topic of teaching English in the United States. Attending this conference would be an incredible experience for me, but with it being a national conference, it's not exactly the most affordable experience for an undergrad. Let me break down the expenses:
~ $110 to register for the NCTE conference
~ $300 (approx.) to stay in St. Louis for three nights
~ $150 (approx.) for meal tickets at the conference
~ $50 (approx.) for transportation to and from
*I have a free ride to and from the conference, so I have not factored in the cost of transportation.*
GoFundMe suggested I place a goal of $1,000, but the entire conference weekend itself will probably cost just over $600. With this being the case, any additional funds I raise through this platform will be used, in the theme of the event, to buy books for school-age students who otherwise would not be able to afford the gift of literature in their homes and in their schools. (I may be able to get a few of these copies signed by the authors at the NCTE conference.)
I know that my cause doesn't seem as vital and immediate as many causes on this platform, but English education in our society is vastly important, and I can use these funds to become educated, gain skills to educate others, and, of course, to provide literature to those who have not yet had the pleasure of reading the great books that I was so privileged to read throughout my public school years.
