Chelley Vukmanic's Medical Funds
In August, Chelley was diagnosed with Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension caused by a spinal fluid leak. Since then, she has undergone four spinal procedures and been on strict bed rest. This has been a physically painful and emotionally draining time for her. After being a patient at Anne Arundel Medical Center and Johns Hopkins, Chelley is now being referred to a CSF Leak Specialist at Duke University Hospital. I am hoping that this gofundme account will help raise the funds to pay for my sister's travel expenses to seek treatment in NC, along with their other accumulating bills.
Chelley is on unpaid medical leave from her position as an English teacher at Broadneck High School. Over the past few years, she has also held positions such as the yearbook advisor, assistant cheerleading coach, and assistant track coach for the school. She has a six year-old daughter who would very much like to have her mommy off of bed rest.
Please help by sharing this link with others who might want to help out Chelley and her family. Chelley has a hard time asking for help, so I'm asking for her.
Chelley is currently driving back home to MD with her husband and mom.
Chelley has politely requested that people refrain from asking her about her headaches and if the surgery worked. It'll take time to heal to figure out how much the surgery helped. So her 6-8 week recovery begins now. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers!
The anesthesiologist's relaxing med worked its magic pretty quickly and next thing I know, I woke up in recovery. The incision pain really sucks, especially since I am on strict flat bedrest so I'm laying on it in one position constantly.
Dr. Karikari said he did indeed see the leak and the method he chose to seal it was removing a small piece of bone to gain access so he could wrap the leak and damaged tissue with artificial dura. Then he used surgical superglue to hold it all in place.
Hoping to slowly transition to sitting and standing tomorrow. As always, thank you for your unwavering support!
As you wake up tomorrow morning or drive to work/school or teach your first class, please take a moment to say a prayer or keep me in your thoughts.
The neurosurgeon booked the OR for 2 and a half hours. If all goes well, I'll only have to spend two nights in the hospital.
I'm very scared about being put to sleep and undergoing a spinal surgery, but I'm also beyond ready to stop this leak for good and return to my previously active lifestyle! Thank you!
@Becky, I apologize for not answering your question sooner! I just wanted to let you know that the surgery did work. I am upright again and back to work in the schools. I will never forget all of the kindness shown toward me and my family through such a difficult time in our lives. I appreciate everyone more than I can express.
I wonder if she got better? Those of us who donated would like to know.
April, We are wondering if your sister and family need any help with Christmas? Is there anything we can do to help make their Christmas?
