Megan Battles Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Beginning in mid-April Megan began experiencing episodes of extreme fatigue and severe headaches that became persistently worse. A couple of weeks later she consulted a physician and was diagnosed with a sinus infection, however, after a week of taking medication her condition worsened. On May 5th, Megan went to the ER and was told she was severely anemic and needed a blood transfusion. She was admitted into the hospital and told a blood specialist would speak to her in the morning. The next morning a Dr. walked into her room and introduced herself as an Oncologist. The Dr. was exceedingly open and honest. She informed the family that they suspected Megan had Acute Leukemia. In most instances the family is given the opportunity to absorb the news, however, in Megan’s case, the Dr. advised the family that a Bone Marrow Biopsy needed to be done immediately to determine the type of Leukemia and treatment. On May 11th, she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Megan was given the first round of Chemo beginning May 12th, 24 hours a day for 7 days. Unfortunately, after the second bone marrow biopsy was done May 20th, the results show cancer cells have increased by 2% from when she was initially admitted. She is currently in the process of being transferred to MD Anderson, in Houston, Texas.
Some of the things that have held this remarkable 26 year young warrior together are the depths of her strength, courage, faith and positive outlook. She continues to inspire family and friends as she continues to fight every day with a smile. Through her positive outlook & God, everything is possible. Many people have reached out to help, wanting to send flowers, fruit baskets and gifts. Fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers can potentially carry bacteria and fungus. Megan’s immune system is very low and she cannot take the risk of it being compromised. However, as the family moves forward, Megan’s medical care, treatment and recovery will be a significant strain on the family mentally, emotionally and financially. Megan had a new job, and unfortunately is no longer covered with their insurance, and will begin using Cobra for health benefits. The medical bills are going to be enormous. Megan has been in the hospital since May 5th, and currently, her continued stay has not been confirmed. I, Jamie Morton am Megan’s friend and a dear friend to her mom, Janie. I have created this GoFundMe page to ask for your help. Any donation you make, small or large, will help Megan’s family get her the best possible medical care, assist with medical expenses, and meet her needs and that of the family during this fragile and difficult time.
It's never easy to do something like this, Megan was exceedingly uncomfortable with it, but I am humbly asking for you to help her and her family during this horrific time. The family thanks you so much from the very bottom of their hearts, for the prayers, for the love, for every ounce of support you have given and for any donations made via GoFundMe. Continuous updates will be posted.
