A Safe Shower Can Change A Life

My desire is to remain as healthy possible, so that I can continue to help people who live with disABILITIES, because I have personally known, from birth,  the challenges people such as myself face each day.  My multiple disABILITIES such as MS, fibromyalgia, arthritis, herniated discs at C5, 6, & 7 and other disc problems, plus hearing and vision loss are my reasons for wanting to reach out to others.  What I want to do for people, is to share what I can to help make their lives better.  Having had to use a wheelchair since 1992 requires that I have a special wheelchair for the shower. The one that I currently have is quite old and consequently has several cracks in the seat cover, causing the seat cushion to fill with water which then leaks out, making it hard for me to get dry and dressed without getting soaked again.  Plus, water gets all over the floor, causing no end of damage to my baseboards, because, with my limited vision, I can't always see when there's water puddling in the corner. I have been injured because of the broken chair, and the worsening of the chair's condition makes a new shower wheelchair a necessity. Without this shower wheelchair it would be impossible for me to take a shower.  I would be grateful for help in acquiring a new shower wheelchair because they are extremely expensive.  Because of my special needs, I need a shower wheelchair with the enhancements this particular chair provides. (see video above) My medical insurance will not cover even a basic shower wheelchair, so I do need outside funding.

For people with disABILITIES, staying clean is more than just a daily refreshment: for us, it means staying healthy.
Being helped to get a new shower wheelchair would be a huge blessing, particularly because I have an indwelling catheter which requires as sterile an environment as possible so I do not get infections.  So you see, showering is more than being clean, it is a medical need. Your help would mean I no longer struggle  with a questionable shower wheelchair while trying to maintain cleanliness as well as dignity, which will allow me to have the energy for the rest of my day.  Imagine how much easier it would be for me to go to church or even shopping, knowing that I'm clean and not offending  others, or carrying germs into the environment, and in general having a more normal life.

I cannot adaquately explain to you the amount of psychological pressure which is on me, just worrying about whether or not my current shower wheelchair is going to fail me.  I have already been cut by a sharp edge on it, which could have possibly lead to a secondary infection, but fortunately did not.  One wheel lock does not work at all, creating instability as I transfer in and out of the chair.  The cracks in the seat, as I have mentioned, allow for shower water to stay in the padding of the seat, which automatically means that mold and bacteria are probably growing in the foam rubber under the seat cover, which cannot be removed.  Because of its age, the hardware holding the framework together is starting to rust; this is causing all the connections to loosen up and be more and more unreliable to support me. Think for a moment how you would feel if something as basic as a shower made you afraid for your safety?   This is a worry that a lot of people with disABILITIES face every time they take a shower or do other activities of daily living, otherwise known as ADL.

Which brings me to the question you may ask, "How can you help other people?" Let me explain.  I am a researcher.  I like to research information so that I can share it with those who could benefit from it, much as I am doing here on GoFundMe.  It's important to me that I share resource information so others might have access to as normal a life as possible.   My main focus is researching and sharing "how-to" on various topics, including acquiring needed medical equipment.  I also enjoy sharing my hobbies, such as raising house plants for gifts.

Being available to listen to someone as they talk about what's important to them lets them feel that someone cares, which is also something I enjoy doing. In the same vein, you who are reading this are also listening to me and helping me realize that someone cares.  By the simple act of sitting in a stable and safe shower wheelchair, I maintain both my physical and psychological health, so that I can continue doing as much as I can for as long as I can, passing on to as many people as possible, what I am able to for them. I would be so very thankful for your help because the concept of paying forward is something I believe in strongly.  Your donation to my GoFundMe request would cause my heart to  jump for joy and gladness and my spirit would float on the clouds, because someone helped me with my need and gave me the chance to pass forward whatever gifts I could give to them.  As each day comes I have hope for the future for me and for other people who live with disABILITIES.  By oneself much can be done, however together many can accomplish more than is expected, and go farther and give better than dreamed.  My dream is to have a safe, durable medical shower wheelchair so that I can remain healthy and then share my life and blessings, giving as many others as possible the same chance I have had, and the same possibility for hope and joy in their life.

Together we can make a huge and lasting difference. Thank you, to everyone who visited here, who read my story, and who will act either by passing along this information, or by helping with a monetary gift.  Together we will be able to reach out farther and wider to more people than just those in our personal lives and neighborhoods. My spirit and my heart hope that everyone has safe travels and many blessings.  Again, thank you.

NOTE:
The items on my wish list are needed accessories which are custom made to go with the shower chair.  The shower chair is specially made to withstand water and dampness without deteriorating and falling apart.  In the video the chair features and functions are demonstrated.
