Violently Injured Police Officers (VIPO) is a peer support group for police officers that have sustained serious permanent injuries during violent encounters in the line of duty.

The paths of Mario Oliveira and Robert DeNapoli crossed some time after their violent injuries. In November of 2010 Mario Oliveira was shot in the line of duty serving an arrest warrant. In September of 2011 Robert DeNapoli was shot in the line of duty responding to an armed robbery. When the officers began to share their experiences it was apparent that it was no longer an option to let newly injured officers face these difficulties alone. The officers, now retired from their injuries, realized that by sharing their collective knowledge with police officers that follow in their footsteps they could try to prevent further difficulties that the newly injured officers face.

While there are many ambitious goals that VIPO will seek to achieve, we realize that beginning as a peer support network will allow us to grow and truly learn the needs of our community. When the needs of our community become clear then we can strive to find creative ways to meet those needs. In the coming months we are prepared to support officers that are violently injured in the future, as well as identify and make contact with those that walked the path before us.

It is a commonly held belief among police officers that only another police officer can fully understand your experiences on the job. This belief can be taken one step further among the officers that have sustained serious permanent injuries during violent encounters in the line of duty. That same level of understanding is found in other seriously injured officers that is lacking in most of your other law enforcement brothers and sisters. Often times seriously injured officers will hesitate to reach out on their own, please help us make contact with police officers that have sustained serious permanent injuries during violent encounters in the line of duty.

We ask for your support within your department, within the law enforcement community, on social media and in your personal lives.
