Vernon and Nikki Mayer have lost everything due to the fires in Paradise CA. Nikki is from California. Vernon was born and raised in Ward Ar. He worked for Lonoke co Sheriffs office, Beebe Police Dept and NLR police. He is currently in law enforcement in California. They fled their home with just their 2 pets and a few belongings, having to pay out of pocket for a hotel 1 1/2 hours away. The area is evacuated. Please consider how you’d feel and help our friends out!! Thanks in advance.
This is their story:
The fire started at 0630. I was on my way to work and saw a little bit of smoke but didn’t think anything of it because we’ve had smoke all summer long. I got to work at 0700 and the smoke was piling in like crazy. I finally looked at my boss and asked if we should be worried and go get our stuff. He said not to be worried yet. Be being from Humboldt I’ve never been so close to a fire. About 30 minutes later we decided we should get out of there and get our stuff. It took me about 45 minutes to go 13 miles. On my way to my house the flames were getting larger and closer. When I arrived home I threw my dog and cat in a kennel and put them in my car. I ran back inside. Ash and flames were getting closer and the smoke was horrible. I grabbed a few clothes, our important file full of birth certificates and social security cards and ran back outside. Vernon was at work so he told me to come to Sacramento out of harms way with him. We’ve been in the hotel ever since. Today I went to Walmart and got clean underwear socks toiletries and pet food. The highways are closed to our homes. The entire town is in shambles and ruined but we have each other and that’s all we can ask for.
