Veme: Queering Phoenix

VEME: Queering PHX is a photographic and story project that focuses on the experiences of LGBTQ/queer young people of color living in Phoenix, AZ. Veme: Queering Phoenix wants to break away from representations that paint this population as a statistic or population at risk and challenge the predominantly white and heteronormative image often associated with the LGBTQ community.

The social effects of heteronormativity, patriarchy, racism, and social stigmatization create a hostile environment for LGBTQ youth of color that places them at a greater risk of experiencing homelessness, sexual abuse, and gender-based violence. queer people of color represent 65% of the LGBTQ youth homeless population. Once these individuals experience homelessness, 59% of these youth become victims of sexual abuse. Trans women of color run a 1 in 8 chance of being murdered. We know the risks in being our true selves, now let's show the beauty we embody when we survive!
 

The main purpose of this fundraiser is to collect donations that will cover photograph printing expenses, outreach material costs, and other small but necessary expenses.  Any donations collected that exceed to overhead of the exhibit will go to create a fund for the participants of the project. Funds are meant to help participants  access life changing resources  such as beginning hormone therapy, securing housing, job development, and access to mental health services. This project is all about creating community and a network of support for queer young people of color in Phoenix! 

Though we have been lucky enough to receive some in-kind donations from community organizations, there are still expenses we need help with. Even the smallest help goes a long way! Veme: Queering Phoenix's exhibit will take place December 4th, 2015, at the Phoenix Center for the Arts.
