VAC Community Garden Project

$470 of $16,500 goal

Raised by 8 people in 43 months
Imagine a place tucked in the valley of Central Vermont surrounded by rolling green hills, farms, lakes, ski areas, with increasing amounts of home gardens and solar panels spread throughout the community.  Now think of a place that has been recently devastated by hail storms, a hurricane, an increasing nationally noted drug addiction crises and poverty.  Rutland, Vermont is this place of fraught beauty.

Our community has experienced some hard times over the last few years; economically, socially and so on.  These factors have still not stymied the resilience of our community to care for and support healthy lives for our children.  All around our community small farmers and cooperative business are re-establishing how we grow, process and sustain healthy food and living.  Farmers’ Markets are filled with local providers spreading the slow food philosophy.

Located in the heart of Rutland’s community is the Vermont Achievement Center ; a valuable resource for children and families.   We are looking to re-establish our green house facilities and improve our garden.  The green house will provide both healthy and bountiful food for our students pre-k to grade 12 and community families, but also lifelong knowledge and skills to live sustainably and healthy.  Our current hoop house suffered damage from 2 hail storms and age has not been kind to it.  We hope that an updated greenhouse will increase the growing opportunities during the colder months in Vermont.

VAC is a non-for profit agency that supports daycare birth to age 5, pre-k education, social services, alternative grade and high school education and special education services, an autism program, support for families and community action.

Students have been working hard to get the hoop house and garden beds ready for new seeds and plants. Students recently went to our neighbors at Garland's Agway to pick out the seeds they want to grow. We can't wait to plant water melon seeds and see how big they get.
