NHBS Legal Defense Fund
The midwives in Arizona are struggling to continue to provide safe care due to the current rules as they are written, interpreted, and enforced by the Arizona Department of Health.
Stephanie Soderblom is a licensed midwife in Mesa who has dedicated her life to midwifery and serving Arizona families so that they may have safe and healthy homebirths. The Az Dept of Health alleges that Stephanie broke a rule by attending a birth that was "over 42 weeks gestation" and are attempting to suspend her midwifery license.
The ultrasound that the woman received during pregnancy showed a very different due date than her "last menstrual period" date - but the rules for Arizona state gestation as only "from last normal menstrual period" and offer no other method for calculating an estimated due date. They have chosen to disregard the ultrasound information and are continuing with the enforcement action.
A lawyer has been retained to fight these allegations. Please help Stephanie and other Arizona midwives with legal costs that will likely be accrued. 100% of the funds gathered will go towards legal fees for Stephanie and any other midwife with enforcement actions - so please help!
$5....$10.....$25.....$100....$1000 - we appreciate ANYTHING you contribute!!
Thank you for supporting Arizona licensed midwives!
Thank you so much to everyone who has so generously donated to this important cause...it means so much to all of the licensed midwives in Arizona!!
As I spoke with my lawyer this morning I was again struck by how fortunate I am and blessed by my community. My lawyer is Julie Gunnigle - if you follow the politics of midwifery in AZ you might recognize Julie as one of the "members of the public" who sat on the Advisory Committee during all of the public meetings with Will Humble in order to revise the rules/regulations a few years ago! Julie has a PASSION for justice as well as a very firm grasp on the rules and regulations as well as their enforcement. I am SO proud to have Julie representing me - and your support here means more than just your dollar amount (which is appreciated in ways you can't understand) - it shows a support for what is right and for individual freedom of medial choices.
Thank you...and PLEASE keep sharing this link!! and keep checking back....this is going to be a good fight!! I will not go quietly into that night...I will fight fight fight!
Thank you to all who are contributing to this very important cause. I want to remind everyone that this fund will not have ONE DOLLAR spent on anything but the legal fight for midwives in Arizona - thank you so much for supporting Arizona midwifery!
(from Stephanie: I give you my word I will do everything that I can for Arizona families and the midwives that serve them.)
The case is currently still on-going. First court date was last September - and the Dept of Health planned to continue moving forward with a 6 month suspension. It is in appeals...with an appeals date of this coming September - a full 3+ years from the birth of the healthy baby that started this entire scenario.
What has happened in this case? Please update.
