During 2019, I have plans to attempt a Guiness World Record for “Most Ultras Run in One Year by a Female.” The goal that I’m trying to reach is 52 ultras within the calendar year. Over 10 years ago, I lost my older brother to an alcohol and drug overdose. I believe that alcohol was a way for my brother Todd to self-medicate an undiagnosed bipolar condition. It is a strong opinion of mine that his life could have been different. I feel that he would have benefited from mental health services as well as having a healthier outlet for dealing with some of his own personal issues. New Year’s Day 2019 would have been his 52nd birthday. This is why I’m choosing to run 52 ultras. On my journey for completing this goal, it is my hopes to raise funds for Kitsap Mental Health, a local not-for-profit mental and behavioral health center here in Bremerton, Washington. (I am setting up a Go Fund Me Page for this) It just so happens that I have another brother named Ty. This facility has provided daily support to him for more than twenty years. Ty was diagnosed as being Developmentally Disabled at a very young age. He was only a year younger than my brother Todd so really idolized him and tried to follow in his footsteps, even if the path wasn’t always a good one. During his teenage years and early twenties, he also struggled with a drug and alcohol dependency. Later, in his twenties, he was further diagnosed with Paranoia Schizophrenia. Prior to receiving services, Ty was taken advantage of by many people in the community and tried to commit suicide on two separate occasions. My mom, specifically, had to deal with a lot on a daily basis, as Ty can be very stressful to be around. The services provided through Kitsap Mental Health has truly saved Ty and allowed him to remain more stable and healthy since his treatment ensued. It has been a tremendous help for our family. The paths of my two brothers and myself have been different but yet the same. I strongly feel that running has altered my life in a multitude of ways. Specifically to the area of mental health, it has brought nothing but a postitive change. Long distance running especially has given me a lot of time to reflect on my brothers’ lives, my own life, as well as others that I am close to. Currently, rates of depression and anxiety are at their highest record levels and not just within the United States. A lot of factors can be a part of this but study after study have shown the benefits of physical exercise to one’s overall mental health. I am a strong proponent of this.
