Believe it or not, for kids in the neighborhoods we serve, sketchbooks change lives. I'm not joking.
You'd be amazed when you talk to our kids and they tell you that they don't have paper or "colors" at home.
Or for some of them who live in homeless shelters or domestic violence shelters, or who live at or below the poverty level, a sketchbook is an insane luxury.
And think about it: What happens to something beautiful on a piece of paper? It gets crumpled up and thrown away. Shoved in a bag. Lost with no name on it.
But a sketchbook is forever.
Stored in a sketchbook our kids work is indestructible. It bolsters a kid's sense of self-worth.

Sketchbooks are about work. Making work. Being proud of work. They are about progress and commitment.
And in a world where kids in poorer neighborhoods don't get a lot of stuff, they are about abundance and dignity.
At Time In, every kid gets two sketchbooks: one for mixed-media work - mega collages based on operas and ballets -- and one for when they go out to galleries and museums. Big kids get Bristol Pads so that they can draw opera characters as manga. It's a moment of being just like the rest of the world.
