We are Global Students for Climate Justice, a growing youth movement championing bold and equitable climate solutions. Our mission - to mobilize students worldwide in alignment with the International Court of Justice's historic call for urgent climate action. These efforts are supported by the Center for the Promotion of Global Health, a Montreal-based nonprofit.
With one of the most critical climate meetings - COP30 - fast approaching, the stakes have never been higher. To meaningfully move the needle on this accelerating crisis, we must demand far more from world nations than watered-down, consensus-based commitments.
To take our future back, there must be REAL CHANGE from what previous meetings have produced.
In light of this, we are calling for an additional, independent environmental summit at which agreements would pass with a 2/3 majority vote. Serving to support the existing COP process, this structure would allow for ambitious action that moves beyond typical "lowest common denominator" outcomes. Moreover, the summit will call for legally binding commitments on key voluntary initiatives. These include:
- The Global Methane Pledge, an agreement to reduce methane emissions by thirty percent by 2030;
- The 30x30 Initiative, by which nations aim to protect thirty percent of land and thirty percent of the ocean by 2030;
- Aspects of the Paris Agreement.
Making such agreements legally binding would be immensely valuable in strengthening accountability, reducing the effects of national political cycles, and generally creating a favourable environment for ambitious collective action.
