Urgent appeal: Help us save Layla

9 month old beagle cross Layla was hit by a car last week and broke her leg in two places.
Requiring expensive surgery by an orthropaedic surgeon, Layla's family (two parents and three children) called the GTHS for help. They couldn't afford the surgery but wanted to do everything they could to save Layla's life....even if it meant making the very difficult decision to surrender her to the shelter.
At the GTHS, we see families faced with these heart-wretching decisions far too often. We know about the power and love between pets and people and hate to see families broken up during emergency situations.
It is for this reason that the GTHS Pet Retention program has been developed. This program provides funding and help for one-time emergency situations for financially limited pet families that want to keep their pet but just aren't sure how. This program works together with our local veterinarians and human service agencies to keep pets with their loving families and provide alternatives to surrender.
This program provides HOPE when it is so critically needed.
Layla's family was approved into the GTHS Pet Retention program and on Tuesday she will return to her family to recover from her surgery surrounded by love.
We estimate that we will need $10,000 to help us keep pets like Layla in homes this holiday season. Each family will be screened through an application process with the goal of keeping family pets out of our shelter system and in the homes that love them so dearly.
