The Quest to open URBAN FORAGER - Eastbourne's First Zero-Waste Store

Here we go......

Who am I?

My name is Sapphyre, and I have a dream....

Since going vegan over a year ago, and joining many vegan and environmental groups on different sites, it was quickly brought to my attention how much we need to do as individuals to create a better world for us to live in and to stop destroying our planet. Not just for us, but for future generations.

I tried to make a conscious effort to change the way I lived, and endeavoured to become less wasteful. I'm not perfect. Nobody is. But all it takes is one small step by many to make a huge impact. But the lack of resources and alternatives can sometimes prove to be a hindrance.

They say it takes more than one person to make a change, but perhaps by opening this store and providing people with not just what we want, but what we need, it will be the start of something good

So what's the deal?

Plastic waste has been at the forefront of the news recently, but this isn't a new problem. It has been around for years, but only now are we realising the extent of this issue.

Everywhere we look nowadays, almost everything is covered in plastic. Our food, our toiletries, even our household products. It uses a huge amount of resources to create or even recycle plastics. It is not sustainable, and much of our waste ends up in the ocean.

But it's not just plastic. We've become a 'throwaway' society. We live for convenience. But at what cost?

'Out of sight, out of mind' they say. Do we know what happens to the things we throw away? They clog up our landfills - if they ever get there.

Whatever happened to the days when we used to keep and reuse things? Purchasing things that would last. A simpler time when almost everything was package free.

The average household in the UK produces more than a tonne of waste every year. Isn't it time something changed?

OK, what's the plan?

By going package free, we can eliminate the need for single-use plastics.

At Urban Forager, every item will be Zero Waste. For the bulk dry food products, oils, spices, etc. customers can bring their own container to fill up with the product of their choice or purchase a jar in-store for that purpose.

Other products (ie bamboo toothbrushes) will be packaged in recyclable or compostable material.

But it doesn't stop there. We are even planning to fit out the store with recycled/reclaimed materials and furniture. Zero Waste indeed!

How you can help....

This store will be run operating as a Community Interest Company (CIC), with a percentage of profits donated to local environmental groups and community groups and projects,

By contributing, even just a little, you are helping to make this dream a reality!

You can help to put Eastbourne on the map as being  a pioneer, bringing us one step closer to being plastic free.

This store is for anybody and everybody. This store is for you.

For the new millenials looking to reduce their eco footprint by being 'greener', to the golden generation who can 'step back in time' to a simpler age when almost everything was package free. The store will almost certainly be a nostalgic experience.

I am keeping the crowdfunding as a 'flexible goal' as I am determined to open up the store regardless of how much is raised. We need this! We owe it to our planet!

But it's not just money that will help - volunteers are always welcome, as well as any advice, help in sourcing reclaimed materials and furniture. Anything will be received with the deepest gratitude!

This store is for all of us!

What do we need?

The goal is £13,500. The breakdown is as follows:

Rent and fees                                                                                                               3,900
Shop Fixtures and Fittings (including dispensers and scales)         6,500
Initial Stock                                                                                                                   2,500
Miscellaneous expenses (insurance, legal fees etc)                                  600

Money already raised from fundraisers, contributions etc.           (1,500)

Total still needed                                                                                                     12,000

Even if we do not reach this goal, I will attempt to open the store even on a small scale. Eastbourne will get their plastic-free store one way or another.

Other Ways You Can Help

Money isn't everything. If there is any other way you can help please contact us. We are looking for volunteers to clean up and fit out the store, ways to source reclaimed wood, material, furniture etc., and well, basically people to spread the word!

Please share this campaign! With your friends, family, co-workers, and anyone you think may be interested!
