At the age of 10 I came home from school to find my house padlocked while a sheriff and social worker stood outside. My 11 year old brother and I entered the house and found our mother crying and saying she was unable to care for us any longer, she then drove away. My brother and I were taken to a shelter for children where we were soon separated, leaving me the youngest all alone. Living with us at the time was my 16 year old sister that was taken to a girl’s home in another city and 3 older siblings, who were too old for social service to care for, so they were left on the street. Thank God for friends who took them in, (People Helping People). My family was torn apart in an instant! With that said, life is still truly worth living. The effect of such trauma on a child has lasting consequences.

I am now 46 and for years, I’ve heard a call deep within to do something further, something different with my life that would challenge me to display a tremendous amount of faith. However I’ve learned through life’s many tests to drown out that call and do things my way, a way that was safe (sometimes) but not a way that was intended for me to live and that would allow my purpose in this life to shine. In October 2015, I stopped being afraid and started listening to and trusting God. Looking beyond my fears and stepping out on faith allowed me to see that the pain of my past was stopping me from stepping into my purpose. Faith taught me that my suffering is and was intended to help others. I had to learn to confront that pain, then banish it with forgiveness and to use it as a reminder of my strength. With the love, guidance and support of my wife, my church, close family and friends (People Helping People), I resigned from my position in the Social Service department of an agency where I dedicated 17 years to the service of the youth of NYC and Long Island. I found in my faith the courage to pursue my purpose:

“Compassionate Family & Individual Services (CFIS).”

Your donation will help CFIS provide housing for over 80 homeless youth in New York City and plant seeds that could change their lives forever.

What can we accomplish TOGETHER when generous people make something happen?
