Earthquake Relief - Ecuador 2016

Donation protected
Dear friends,

Ecuador needs you.

As you may or may not have heard, yesterday at 7 pm a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Ecuadorian coast. Leaving behind at least 233 dead and more than 1,500 people were injured.

David Rothery, a professor of planetary geosciences at The Open University, northeast of London, says the total energy released by the magnitude-7.8 quake Saturday in Ecuador was "probably about 20 times greater" than the magnitude-7.0 quake in Japan on Saturday.

The tremblor was the strongest quake to hit Ecuador since 1979.

Authorities say landslides were making it difficult for emergency workers to reach the towns hardest hit by the earthquake.

"We're trying to do the most we can, but there's almost nothing we can do," said Gabriel Alcivar, mayor of Pedernales, a town of 40,000 near the quake's epicenter, according to The Associated Press.

"This wasn't just a house that collapsed, it was an entire town," he said.

Though we are not physically in Ecuador, this tragedy hits close to our hearts.

Friends, acquaintences, and even family members have lost their homes, workplaces, and loved ones. This is why we would like to invite all of you to donate money or resources to help us in this moment of grief. It would be of great help to allow these families get back on their feet again.

INFORMATION REQUESTED BY GOFUNDME.COM

1. Who you are
My name is Karine P. Patino, I am working with W. Paul Alvarez and friends to collect as much as we can in order to help the victims of the earthquake that occured in Ecuador.

2. Where you're from
I am from Mount Kisco, New York but I currently live in White Plains for law school.  I attend Pace Law School, I'm in my last year and graduate in May 2016.

3. Your relationship to the parties you're raising funds for
My parents are Ecuadorian, my family is Ecuadorian and most of my family and friends still live in Ecuador.  The same goes for my friends, including W. Paul Alvarez, a fellow Ecuadorian 3L at Pace Law.  After learning of what happened to those in Ecuador after the earthquake, we knew it was our duty to help.

4. How the funds will be spent (be specific as possible)and 5. How you intend to get the funds to those in need

The funds will be spent in donations to MIES, which is the Ministerio de Inclusion Economica y Social - they are a government entity that is channeling donations to the affected areas.  I am also using donation money to purchase the needed supplies in Ecuador - through the Ecuadorian Embassy in New York.  We will take pictures of everything we purchase, of every receipt we receive, and of the entire process.  Part of my own, personal, donation is travel costs and any money spent on transferring funds.  Our goal is to be completely transparent and to help the best way we can.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Please help us to raise as much as possible in order to help out as much as we can.  Money cannot bring back lives, heal hearts, or erase the tragedy but it can help these amazing and resiliant people with perhaps some food or shelter or basic necessities during such a tragic time.

Thank you to everyone, whether it's with a donation, a prayer, or a positive thought - I'm positive it will help <3

Gracias!

On behalf of Karine P. Patino, Washington Paul Alvarez, and everyone helping to spread the word!
