Unique Valdez - Car Accident Medical Expenses

$13,516 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 215 people in 1 month
On Saturday May 25th my niece Unique was in a terrible car accident with four other friends. Their vehicle was totaled when it slammed into a tree and was mangled beyond recognition. Unique and the other teens had to be extracted from the vehicle using the jaws of life. She was rushed to the hospital where she remains in stable, but critical condition. She has undergone a few procedures and every day has been a fight for her. She has been making slow progress, and regrettably, experiencing setbacks along the way as well.

About Unique
Unique, as her namesake suggests, is a truly unique individual. They say it takes a village to raise a child, well Unique single-handed build that village around her. She was raised by her Aunt Adriana and her grandparents. I say I’m her aunt, but I am really her aunt Adriana's cousin. We grew up together like sisters and Unique by default became my niece. But this case is not unique to me. Through her smile, kindness, quick wit, and self-deprecating humor Unique has a way of working her way into everyone’s heart. If there was another word to describe her it would be universal - as in she belongs to everyone. To the people she has touched, she isn’t just someone you know, she is your other daughter, your niece, your little sister, and your best friend.

Unique is a high school senior, who just 7 days prior to the accident attended her senior prom. She has been a member of the girls varsity softball team at her high school for the last 4 years, is a hard-working student, and is beloved by her teammates, coaches, classmates, vice principals, and teachers. Like every other senior she was looking forward to graduation in June and starting the next chapter of her life at Goldenwest College.

About this GoFundMe
Unique is still battling it out in the ICU for now and the road to recovery will be a long and expensive one. Between an extended ICU stay, surgeries, and the growing number of medical expenses we expect that my Aunt and Uncle (Unique’s grandparents) will be burdened with extremely high medical bills. I am starting this GoFundMe fundraiser in hopes to alleviate some of the financial burden that they are about to undertake. During this painful time, we just want for them to be able to focus solely on Unique, and not have to worry about the bills to come.

We would also like to point out that this is the only and official GoFundMe effort sanctioned by her grandparents and family.

Please help us spread the word about this effort by sharing this link on FB, IG, or email.

A Message from The Family
The family remains optimistic about Unique’s recovery. They are overwhelmed by the level of support and love they have received by Unique’s friends, coaches, teachers, and school administration. Their faith is strong and they are confident that the girl who never backs down from a fight, will keep on fighting. They would like to thank everyone for their prayers, kind texts, hospital visits, hot meals, and overall support. They ask that you keep the prayers coming and that you keep Unique in your thoughts.

This is just a sampling of the cards that Unique has received from friends and family. Every night at 8pm my sister hosts what she calls "Fan Mail" hour. She sits by her bedside and reads the cards and well wishes to her. I want to confess that even though the cards are meant to uplift Unique, they uplift the rest of us too.

Unique's grandmother says she has come home late night weary from the hospital only to be uplifted by the hand delivered cards and notes in her curbside mailbox.

We want to thank everyone for taking the time to write/make a card or drop off a note for Unique. Please know that they have been passed on to her and that they surround her in her hospital room.

We look forward to the day all of you can hand deliver your notes to her in person, but while she remains in ICU that is just not a reality.

Please keep the support coming and we will hand deliver it with love and feature it during "Fan Mail" hour.

We want to thank everyone who has donated to Unique's medical expense fund and those that have been praying around the clock for her and her family.

We can’t believe the power of goodwill that we met our goal as soon as we did. Because we don't know how long the journey will be, but we know we have a long and hard road ahead of us, we have adjusted our goal to reflect the unknown.

Thank you again to all the donors, friends, family, and anonymous angels for your generosity. Our family is truly overwhelmed with the outpouring of kindness. Our cup truly runneth over.

We will continue to think of our sweet girl as the beautiful dancing queen who lit up every room she walked into.

Unique had a big day yesterday. She began her day with a baptism. In the early morning hours Unique was surrounded by an intimate group of close family as she was blessed with Holy water. It was a peaceful and beautiful ceremony made possible by the thoughtful hospital staff, who generously lifted the two-person visitation rule for the occasion. A lifelong friend of her father and mother, James, stood by her side. James has considered himself her ‘nino since birth and yesterday he officially became her Padrino (Godfather). Her beloved cousin Lori, who has always considered Unique her little sister, became more than her “big sister” she became her Madrina (Godmother).

In the evening Unique was recognized for athletic achievement. She received an award for being a “4 Year Letter in Softball”. Her best friend Jacob, dressed in his Sunday best, accepted the award on behalf of Unique and her family. We are so proud of our girl. Her Aunt Adriana remembers when Unique, as a freshmen, announced she would be trying out for the varsity team. Ever supportive Adriana encouraged her, but had her reservations, she didn’t want Unique to be disappointed if she didn’t make the varsity team. She never discouraged her or tell her to lower her expectations. Instead they all got to work. Unique and her “dad” Chris, practiced night after night throwing the ball with her. Adriana and Unique’s “sisters” cheered them on every night. Tryouts came and Unique made the team. She went on to make the team for the next 3 years. She loves the game, the girls, and her devoted coaches. This other family has brought her so much pride and joy and we can’t wait for her to be reunited with them.
