Union F.U.N. Robotics Team Heads to World Championships
Fiercely Uknighted Nation (F.U.N.) is a new robotics team from Union High School, La Porte City, Iowa. F.U.N. participates in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) league of the FIRST robotics organization. This is the “big leagues” of robotics competitions.
After nearly a year of organizing and 45 days of intense preparation in the “build season,” we competed for the first time as an FRC team at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa on March 23-25, 2107. The outcome was highly improbable for a team from a small, rural school in its rookie season. Through an alliance with teams from Duluth, Minn. and Hatton/Northwood, ND, we advanced to the FIRST World Championships in St. Louis, Mo. on April 26-29, 2017.
To establish our team and compete with our robot in the Iowa Regional, we had raised many thousands of dollars through grants, private contributions, in-kind donations and student-led fundraisers. Competing at Worlds will require an additional entry fee of $5,000, plus transportation, new parts for the robot, promotional supplies, lodging and food.
Our entry fee has been generously covered by a grant from the John Deere Foundation, and our school district will be supplying transportation, both of which we greatly appreciate. In the weeks leading up to the World Competition, we will be conducting additional fundraisers, and each of our team members and their families also will be contributing to the costs.
If you would like to help support this “Cinderella” team for the 2017 FRC season, we would truly appreciate your donation. Any remaining funds that are not used this year will be saved for next year’s season.
