Carmen Consuelo Betancourt es madre de 3 hijos, abuela de 6 nietos y bisabuela de una bisnieta de 4 años.
Con 76 años y unas ganas inmensas de vivir, trabaja como encargada del cafetín del Colegio Dr. Rafael Antonio Uzcátegui, en la ciudad de Mérida, estado Mérida, Venezuela.
La noche del jueves 21 de marzo, fue llevada de urgencia al Seguro Social en Mérida. A primera vista, el diagnóstico apuntaba a un ACV (Accidente Cerebro-Vascular) Isquémico, debido a que la tomografía realizada no mostró daños cerebrales, por lo que se procedió a realizar otros estudios para descartar otros diagnósticos.
Tras estudios adicionales, Carmen fue diagnosticada con un cuadro de Mielopatia Cervical Espondilótica, con cuadro neurológico de instalación rapida, Nurick 4, por lo que ha perdido la capacidad de realizar movimientos por sí misma y se encuentra en la UCI (Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos), bajo vigilancia 24 horas debido a la complejidad del cuadro que presenta.
El día 28 nos informaron que era necesario el realizar una operación a nivel cervical para el tratamiento del diagnóstico, operación que en un primer momento no era urgente, y que estaba pautada para el día 15 de abril, tiempo en el que haríamos lo posible por conseguir el dinero necesario.
Sin embargo, debido a la gravedad del cuadro y a las complicaciones que se han presentado durante los últimos días, la operación se ha tornado de carácter urgente. Los especialistas recomiendan proceder en un máximo de 48 horas, ya que al volverse más delicado su estado de salud, especificamente presentando complicaciones respiratorias, se hace imposible realizar la intervención sin tratar primero dichas complicaciones.
Actualmente, Carmen recibe 6 ampollas de Dexametasona de 8 miligramos, 2 ampollas de Cefatoxina de 1 gramo, 2 ampollas de ranitidina y Tramal en ampollas; todo lo anterior al día. Dicho tratamiento asciende a un costo de casi 100$ al día.
Adicionalmente, los costos de la operación ascienden hasta los 5.000$ dólares sin tomar en cuenta los honorarios médicos.
Después de todos los días de tratamiento, exámenes, estudios y gastos médicos, no disponemos del monto necesario para realizar la operación en el tiempo estipulado, menos aún tomando en cuenta que los tratamientos deben seguirse realizando tras la operación.

Carmen Consuelo Betancourt is the mother of 3 children, grandmother of 6 grandchildren and great-grandmother of a 4-year-old great-granddaughter.
With 76 years and an immense desire to live, she works as manager of the cafeteria of Dr. Rafael Antonio Uzcátegui School, in the city of Mérida, Mérida state, Venezuela.
On the night of Thursday, March 21, she was rushed to Social Security in Mérida. At first sight, the diagnosis pointed to an ischemic CVA (Cerebro-Vascular Crash), because the CT scan did not show any brain damage, so other studies were carried out to rule out other diagnoses.
After further studies, Carmen was diagnosed with a Cervical Espondilotic Myelopathy, with a fast-setting neurological picture, Nurick 4, so she has lost the ability to perform movements by herself and is in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) , under 24-hour surveillance due to the complexity of the table presented.
On day 28 we were informed that it was necessary to perform an operation at the cervical level to treat the diagnosis, an operation that at first was not urgent, and was scheduled for on April 15, time in which we would do everything possible to get the necessary money.
However, due to the seriousness of the table and the complications that have arisen during the last days, the operation has become urgent. The specialists recommend to proceed in a maximum of 48 hours, since as their health becomes more delicate, specifically presenting respiratory complications, it is impossible to perform the intervention without first treating said complications.
Currently, Carmen receives 6 ampoules of Dexamethasone of 8 milligrams. , 2 ampoules of Cefatoxina of 1 gram, 2 ampoules of ranitidina and Tramal in ampoules; all the previous to the day.
This treatment amounts to a cost of almost $ 100 a day.
In addition, the costs of the operation amount to $ 5,000 dollars without taking into account the medical fees.
After all the days of treatment, exams, studies and medical expenses, we dont have the necessary amount to carry out the operation in the stipulated time, even less taking into account that the treatments must be continued after the operation.
