 KEY WEST, FL
A young member of our One Human Key West Family needs your support! Nicky Sorbelli, a 9 yr old 4th year student at KW Montessori Charter School is now at Miami Children's Hospital undergoing biopsies and testing in order to diagnose the cause of the large mass recently discovered in his chest. While our prayers go out to Nicky and the Sorbelli family, they also need some additional support. Wayne and Jamie are unable to operate Island Guitar, their family business, during this difficult time and are already incurring large medical bills. Please help us to provide this family with some financial assistance so that they can devote their energies to helping to heal Nicky and to supporting their daughter, Leela. Those of you who know Wayne & Jamie know that they are always there to lend a helping hand or make a charitable contribution to others. Now is our chance to help them as they have helped so many others in our community. Thank you so much!

I'm heartbroken to have to share the news that Nicky passed away last night. A warrior to the end, Nicky never gave up, but in the end this cancer was just too much for a little boy to overcome. Nicky never lost his sense of humor, sharing a joke of the day with the medical staff (Q: How do you get Pikachu on a bus? A: Poke-him-on!). As we all learn to handle our grief we will always remember him for sunny disposition and beautiful spirit. The Sorbelli family is especially grateful for the outpouring of love, support, kind words and prayers. Please continue to keep Wayne, Jamie, Leela and Nicky in your hearts.

Hello all,

It's been a while since I've put my own words in since Wayne has been able to so eloquently express the struggle their family faces, but now I have to share my own thoughts with updates from Wayne and Jamie. If you're offended by bad words stop reading...

Fuck cancer. And fuck every single disease that comes to test a child. It's just not right...

And after my own opinions I'll share that Wayne says that initially what was "light at the end of the tunnel" became a shotgun blast back to the darkest abyss of the cave. Nicky fought valiantly through the first course of chemo, only to find that his cancer had become chemo resistant and somehow found a way to grow despite the treatments.

This mass in his chest came back with a vengeance... Well back to my personal "fuck cancer" mantra... Nicky is stronger than cancer. He has started radiation that is shrinking this mass and by the end of this week will be back to a new cycle of chemo that will put this cancer into remission.

We are still hoping that among us will be a bone marrow donor.

In other news, Nicky's friends will be joining him at the Michael Fux Center at Miami Children's Hospital for some gaming and music and whatever else moves them this Friday evening. Jack C, Jack N, Brody, Morgan and Parker are really looking forward to reconnecting with Nicky while at the same time Liv is looking forward to having some girl time with Leela... and I won't lie. Andrea, Tara, Ashlie, Michael and I can't wait to see Jamie and Wayne.

I'm in charge of uniforms for the Key West Youth Lacrosse League. I have to extend my gratitude to Lisa Sheehan, lax mom and wife of the Board President, who asked if we could get Nicky's #12 uniform ready for him this year. A truly thoughtful gesture that was met with anonymous support was further supported by Lightning Wear, our uniform company, who will be providing Nicky's uniform (one size up for next year!)...

I guess the main goal of my post is to share that we have had some bumps, some major scares, and some really sad days. We know, however, that we are at least as strong as Nicky and we will not give up. Nicky is fighting every single minute of every single day and we are all praying for him and supporting him.

Please keep Nicky, his sister, Leela, and his mom and dad, Jamie and Wayne, in your thoughts and prayers. With love, gratitude and an abundance of healing energy I'll offer this up. I love you all.. <3

A message from Wayne:

It's a long hard road but we are "getting by with a little from our friends" We thank all of our family and friends for continuing to add funds to our gofundme account as this treatment is ongoing and INTENSE requiring both Jamie and I to rent an apt next to the Miami Children's Hospital since our key west home is just too far from the treatment and to be traveling back and forth is not practical and furthermore there is not a single person in the lower keys who knows how to work with my son's chemo heart port, which makes treating Nicky in a possible emergency a real problem. So we can't work as our store and jobs and all my guitar students are 3.5 hours away from us now. . We are away from our home and friends. Yes we are living on the edge fighting for life and for finances. We r ripping through our life savings & this gofundme account to hold us over and pay our bills until this intense part of chemo is over at the end of this year when then I except to go back to work. FORWARD THINKING, FORWARD MOVING, BLESS UP!!

Thank you to all of the friends, family and strangers who have helped to support this family through your generous donations, thoughts and prayers. Please continue to send healing love out to Nicky.

Thank you all for the continued outpouring of support, well-wishes, prayers and generous donations. Nicky is settling in to what will be his intensive treatment routine for the next 7-8 months, traveling to Miami once or twice a week for treatment. Although he is disappointed that he cannot return to school for the remainder of the year, he is still in great spirits. He's able to have a couple of visitors at a time and has had the opportunity to connect with friends at home and at Miami Children's. I got to see Nick last night and was very happy to see that he was his usual busy self, searching the pantry and fridge for food and goofing off with my son (Jamie had to tell him to stop trying to do pull-ups in the doorway!). Thankfully his appetite remains great and he is experiencing no nausea at this time. All signs are pointing to Nicky continuing to respond well to treatment and we are all looking forward to the day when Nick can say he's kicked this thing's a**!

As the months progress, please keep Nicky and his family in your thoughts and prayers. The power of positive energy is a truly amazing thing! Also, for those of you who have asked how to connect directly with Nicky, please feel free to contact me at 305.797.5129 (text is best because I do have a regular day job) if you would like to send Nicky some mail. He's loving getting things from the letter carrier and would welcome funny stories, jokes, pictures of yourselves or your pets, stories about how you know him and his family, etc. Having to stay home so much is hard, so it's nice to have the mail to look forward to. Thanks again to all of you who have shown the Sorbellis (and me, too!) how many caring and thoughtful souls there are in our community and in the Sorbellis' lives. You are all amazing. :)
