Keeping Football Financially Inclusive

United Glasgow F.C was formed in 2011 to provide a point of access to regular, structured football for those who may find themselves excluded; financially or by discrimination. While the project was originally formed primarily to help refugees and asylum seekers, we welcome players from all backgrounds to come together through football, regardless of your race, religion, sexuality, gender, neighbourhood or footballing ability, recognising that many people from many backgrounds are excluded from the game they love.

In our 6 year history, the club has seen tremendous growth in popularity and numbers. United Glasgow Football Club now has a Women's 11-a-side team in the SWFL Division 2 West, Men's Sunday Team and the Men's Development Team in the Glasgow Community & Co-operative League, a men's drop in session, a mixed drop-in session and a women's 5-a-side drop-in session all operating under the same principles of inclusion and the promotion of progressive ideals. We do our best to kit out new players with training gear and football boots where they need them, so that everyone can play as soon as they can.

Our two guiding principles have always been centred on anti-discrimination and financial inclusion. By trying to keep our costs to  an absolute minimum and offering football training and games for free, we bring together individuals from communities who otherwise may never have met.

We are excited that we are able to help an increasing number of people while more get involved, however it has made it more difficult to subsidize these activities and our previous methods of funding are reaching their limit. We’ve had a great deal of success covering the cost of our training sessions through monthly subscriptions but other costs are increasingly outweighing our current means!

Our target is £500 for this crowdfunding campaign and to run for 24 days up until Christmas Eve. This money will exclusively go to funding the cost of making football financially inclusive and making that sustainable for the future.

This will include money towards:

- Subsidising football matches that the United Glasgow FC teams participate in (which includes pitch fees and referee fees).

- Contributing towards training venue hire costs

-Buying training equipment (boots, base layers, etc)

Whether you can give a little or a lot, we appreciate your support!

Questions & Answers

Why does football need to be subsidised?

We love football and so do millions of people around the world, it's a great thing to be part of and we feel that it's a tragedy if people can't access football because they don't feel welcome or can't afford it. We can tackle discrimination and promote our values to create a welcoming space but if people cannot afford to attend training, have no football boots or kits or our teams can't pay their league fees then we're not providing the access that we want to. That's why we help to subsidise football for those who need it. Football should be for everyone regardless of sexuality, gender, race and, importantly, of financial position.

What would you do if you received more than your 5K target?

If we were lucky enough to exceed our target we would continue to use the money into next season for the same reasons and/or provide additional football equipment for players, where needed.

How did you fund things before?

Training Fee’s are covered by an online membership system where people inside and outwith the club can donate each month to be a UGFC member.  This has been quite successful and allowed us to cover training fees.  However, we currently pay out around £200 more per month that we receive through our monthly donations.

The cost of games is currently covered by the club through various fund raising activities like: selling UGFC merch and running events like gigs; by contributions from those members of the teams that are able to pay towards the cost of games.

Training equipment like boots and jackets are essential for those people who can’t afford to buy these things themselves and on a cold Glasgow day, they are absolutely necessary!
