#TRISTANSTRONG

My name is Nancy Sorensen. I'd like to tell you about my favorite Superhero, Tristan Chidester. From a small boy, Tristan has loved athletics, and has excelled in sports of every kind. He has been especially passionate about the University of Utah Utes, and the San Francisco 49ers.

When Tristan was 11, the doctors found a huge tumor in his ankle. Tristan was diagnosed with a rare and lethal form of cancer, called Ewing's Sarcoma. For over a year, my favorite Superhero fought a mighty battle, including a lower leg amputation and an intense year of the most lethal kind of chemotherapy. Through that horrible time, Tristan retained his sense of humor and fought like a warrior. Even as he was fighting for his life, he was always concerned about how others worried about him.

He's a very special young man. Two years ago he went into remission, and learned to use a prosthetic leg. In fact, he was so enthusiastic about it, he wore out several prosthetics. I remember watching him, amazed, when he played basketball for the first time after is amputation. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he went out there and mastered a new way to play sports again.

Tristan is courage. Of course he was scared, and there were many hurdles that seemed impossible, but we all know that courage means facing things even when you're afraid. I have tons of pictures of Tristan playing basketball, baseball, fishing, and even body surfing, as you can see in the picture above. So often people think that once a child has gone into remission, everything is back to normal, but there were many things that Tristan had to overcome, and he did so with grace and courage. He is a hero to me and so many ways.

A couple of weeks ago, Tristan had severe pain in his shoulder. The x-ray did not find anything in his shoulder, but found a tumor in his lung. After many scans and tests, our worst fears were realized. The Ewing's Sarcoma has returned. He is beginning another battle that he knows is excruciating. Tristan is facing this new fight with every bit as much dignity and courage as he did the last time.

I have started this page in hopes that we can help the Chidester family financially. The co-pays for treatment and hospital stays are enormous. The cost of prescriptions are shockingly high. There are so many little details that have to be taken care of just to keep his pain manageable as he undergoes chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

All donations will go into a special account just for Tristan. The thing I wish for most to come from gofundme is to show Tristan that he is a Superhero. I want him to see how much love and support our community has for him, and let him know that we are fighting right alongside him. He doesn't want anyone's pity, that is just not his style. But when people show their support and love, it gives an extra boost to his tender soul. I want him to know that he is not alone. Tristan is going to win this fight against cancer, because Tristan is strong. He is my favorite Superhero.
