On January 8, 2016 another homeless encampment was demolished by construction crews here in Chattanooga, Tn. The time of dealing with the homeless as a problem has to end. The time for building new opportunities is here.
The leadership of the Free Garden Community Project recently met to discuss how we as a community could help. We came up with no small plan.
The future in helping deal with the homeless situation in our country is upon us. Cities all over the US have begun addressing the issue by simply giving them housing. Sounds easy enough, right? Sadly, bureaucracy and business often come in the way of just simply handing over homes, so a new idea is being tried in many different t cities. Tiny home villages are making huge waves. For good reason. They offer a home to those who need it while still saving the government money. Win-win, right? Unfortunately the story doesn't end there. While it is true that tiny home villages do offer a higher standard of living to the homeless it provides for, most are still stuck jobless and without a way of making a life for themselves.
This is where you come in. The Tiny Home Community Project doesn't just want to build a tiny home village in Chattanooga. We want to build a community. Our first order of business has been to figure out ways for people to not only have a home, but have work that will enhance every aspect of their lives and the city around them. In order to solve this issue, we came up with the idea of combining a tiny home village with a profitable, sustainable urban farm. By using principles from both the Tiny Home movement and Permaculture, we can not only help the homeless have a home, they can build a life for themselves and their families.
This will not be an easy task. The Tiny Home Community Project is just a collection of people who want to help. We will need to incorporate in to a nonprofit, build a website, hire designers, lawyers, have blueprints made, and maybe even pay for the lights since this will take up a large portion of our time.
We will be meeting with the Mayor of Chattanooga within the next week to talk to him about this very project and seeking his support. Will you help us send a loud cry that he can't ignore?
