It Felt Like Black Mirror—Until It Was Just My Life

I’m Dr. Timothy Matthews, Assistant Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health at California State University, Northridge.

I hold a PhD from UCLA and serve as Co-Principal Investigator on a federally funded CDC/NIOSH R21 grant focused on protecting essential workers from cardiovascular harm caused by burnout and overwork.

In just two years at CSUN, I’ve published more than 10 peer-reviewed studies on trauma, environmental injustice, and the structural causes of health collapse—including the very conditions I’m now experiencing. In my department, the requirement for tenure is one publication.

My academic work focuses on the systems that fail people under pressure. CSU has now become one of those systems.

Ironically, the same institution that purportedly supported my grant to study burnout and systemic harm is now producing it—in real time.

In 2025, my university withheld my NIH-funded salary.

The funds existed. The accounting confirmed it.

But when I formally disclosed my disability status—recognized under the ADA—the system locked down.

My email froze mid-send when I contacted the one person authorized to release the money.

And when I tried to report procedural threats against me through the university’s official police portal, the reporting system itself was broken.

I reproduced the error live on the phone with CSUN campus police.

I documented it all.

Every screen. Every timestamp.

That’s what systemic collapse looks like.

The Bigger Problem

This is no longer just about me.

It’s part of a dangerous pattern affecting disabled faculty, immigrant scholars, and federal researchers alike:

Institutions are erasing vulnerable professors through procedural failure and silence.

This is a line in the sand.

A signal.

A shield.
