<div>I met Danny during a recent Road Scholar trip and witnessed his extraordinary gift firsthand. He doesn't just point out wildlife—he brings the entire forest to life. With uncanny ability, he identifies birds by their distant calls, spots perfectly camouflaged creatures, and shares profound knowledge about every living thing.

<div>But now, Danny is losing his sight.

<div>Danny has been diagnosed with ectatic corneal disease (ECD) in both eyes—a progressive condition that causes the corneas to thin and bulge, severely distorting his vision. For someone whose livelihood depends on keen eyesight, this is devastating. Without treatment, his ability to work as a guide—the profession he's practiced since childhood—will disappear.

<div>The solution is corneal transplant surgery in both eyes, which could restore his vision and allow him to continue supporting his family. While Costa Rica has good public healthcare, non-emergency procedures like these often mean waiting up to 10 years — by which time it could be too late.

<div>Private treatment costs $20,000 USD — an impossible sum for Danny's family. Despite his wife and eldest daughter working hard to help (his daughter attending night classes while working), this financial burden is overwhelming.

<div>Mi nombre es Paula Castillo, y escribo esto con el corazón en la mano. Mi mamá, Emperatriz Trujillo, ha vivido en los Estados Unidos por 23 años. Ella vino aquí para construir una vida mejor, y eso fue exactamente lo que hizo. Ha trabajado duro, formó una familia y crió a dos hijas que son ciudadanas estadounidenses. Mi papá también es ciudadano estadounidense, y juntos han construido sus vidas aquí a pesar de muchos altibajos.

<div>Recientemente, mis padres finalmente decidieron dar el siguiente paso importante: legalizar su matrimonio para que mi mamá pudiera comenzar su proceso hacia la residencia permanente. Fueron a su cita programada, y todo salió perfectamente. Su matrimonio fue aprobado y estaban listos para avanzar al siguiente paso en su proceso migratorio.

<div>El lunes 27 de octubre, ICE se llevó a mi mamá. Fue algo completamente inesperado y devastador. La detuvieron por un viejo caso de deportación del año 2005, aunque se le había permitido permanecer en Estados Unidos bajo un Formulario I-246. Durante años, ella hizo todo correctamente. Se presentó a todas sus citas con inmigración, siguió todas las reglas y nunca se escondió de nadie. No tiene antecedentes penales, solo una vida llena de trabajo, amor y sacrificio por su familia y su comunidad.

<div>Ahora ha sido trasladada de un centro de detención a otro durante casi tres semanas, pero para ella se ha sentido como una eternidad. Cada día es más largo y más difícil, rodeada de miedo e incertidumbre. Dice que todas las personas allí están asustadas, y es desgarrador escuchar tantas historias de personas que viven con ansiedad constante, sin saber qué les espera. El ambiente está lleno de preocupación, tristeza y dolor, con familias separadas y seres queridos sufriendo. Ha sido extremadamente duro para ella emocionalmente, y también para nosotros como familia.

<div>Mi hermana vive en España, así que he tenido que manejar todo sola. He estado llamando a abogados, reuniendo documentos y buscando cualquier manera posible de traerla de regreso a casa. Ha sido abrumador, no solo emocionalmente, sino también económicamente. Los honorarios de los abogados y los procesos legales son increíblemente costosos, y he hecho todo lo posible por mantenerme al día.

<div>I met Lupita as a child in Mexico City, through her older sister, my best friend. From the very start, I admired Lupita’s tenacity and infectious positivity. Born with arthrogryposis, a rare condition limiting joint and muscle development, Lupita faced incredible challenges. Yet with every difficulty, she responded with laughter, creativity, and resilience—writing with a shoelace and embracing life with joy. Her loving Lebanese-Mexican family gave her strength, but it is Lupita’s own determination that continues to inspire all who know her.

<div>Today, Lupita lives in the United States, works full-time, and shows the same independence and kindness she always has. Yet recently, she became the victim of a fraudulent scam, one that destroyed her credit and left her with $15,000 in debt she never created. Despite working 40 hours each week, her basic expenses and this false burden make it impossible for her to buy a safe, ADA-accessible home—a lifelong dream.

<div><strong> “I was born in 1963 in Mexico City. I have two sisters and one brother. I was born with a disability called arthrogryposis, which is caused by a lack of amniotic fluid in the womb. I was one in a million.</strong>

<div><strong> I was fortunate to have a doctor named Eduardo Luque, who helped me overcome so much and become physically the person I am today. </strong>
</div>
<div><strong>I come from a family of Lebanese descent, all very close and united, thanks to God. A person with a disability faces so many obstacles in life, but with the help of friends and family, I have been able to jump over many of them.</strong>
</div>
<div><strong> I remember how much I enjoyed it when my siblings brought their friends over because we all played together. One time we were running around, and my sister’s friend Marcela was pushing me in my wheelchair, but we both fell down. My mother was very upset because I had just had surgery on my arm.</strong>
</div>
<div><strong>We, people with disabilities, have many dreams and goals we want to achieve, but often because of our condition or the people we encounter, we cannot reach them. I married a man I loved very much, and I believe he loved me too but he had a serious problem, he was an alcoholic. He is now in heaven.</strong>
</div>
<div><strong>I was unfortunately scammed by a company that turned out to be fraudulent. After approximately three months without seeing any improvement in my accounts, I realized that I had been scammed. Since then, it has become increasingly difficult to make my payments, it's impossible for me to catch up on my debt.</strong>
</div>
<div><strong>I tried to fix my credit so I can buy my own home, but to pay off my credit cards I need to cover about $15,000. That is very difficult for me, and even though I work 40 hours per week, I just cannot make enough.</strong>”

Help Lupita Rebuild Her Life and Independence

<div>Hi, my name is Semih Ozkaya, as you guys know I am the owner of Apricot and Baklava cafe. The good news all my family members are thank god alive. But, my dearest sister with her 2 kids and her husband are homeless currently. I can't reach them physically. February 5th at 10 pm we got a text message from my sister that said "I AM ALIVE" since then I am having super high blood pressure and migraines. I don't care about myself but they didn't even have enough water or food for over 40 hours. They had very minimal water and 1 frozen piece of bread that someone in street gave to them. But, thank god they are alive that's what matters. Now they think about surviving tomorrow (the future) once they are back to normal they are gonna start worrying about their houses and their stuff. Malatya is my home, where all my dad's side of the family lives I had 5 families (my sister, 2 aunties, 1 uncle, and 1 cousin). I have to raise them with money that is the only thing I can do for them. I am doing as much as possible I have very limited cash since you guys know we just opened a new place. I am sending anything I got. They have been outside on streets that have had over 30 inches of snow last 48 hours. Please let's lift them again. The minute that I heard that my 1-year-old nephew almost got under the wardrobe but my sister saved him. That was the last thing I remember, PLEASE I AM ASKING EVERY ONE OF YOU TO HELP AS MUCH AS YOU CAN! DON'T SAY IT'S LESS OR NOT ENOUGH!!! $1 IS $18 TURKISH LIRAS. THAT IF WE HIT OUR RECORD. At least they can have a down payments or they can rent their houses until they are up and walking by themselves again. I can't drink or eat anything while my sister and her family shares 1 piece of frozen bread. I don't have a right to wear a jacket while my sister lost her voice in that freezing weather. If we hit 100K that means 20k each to every family. That will really raise and recover them.

HELP MY FAMILY TO RAISE UP AGAIN

Noah Brisson was a loving and devoted father and husband. He passed away on December 13th from a seizure caused by epilepsy. He leaves behind his wife, Candace Brisson, three beautiful children, his parents and siblings as well as countless friends. <br /><br />Many friends have asked how they can help the Brisson family during this time of grief and transition.
