<div>Our family is humbly reaching out for help something we never imagined doing, and something we do now with a very heavy heart.

<div>My momma, my sister, and I have always been fiercely protective of our elders: Auntie Norma, Auntie Fidela, Auntie Elena, and our Uncle Chewy. They’re the heartbeat of our family. They’re our responsibility. And we’ve carried that responsibility with pride, love, and determination. But today, the weight is heavier than what we can manage alone.

<div><strong>Who</strong> <strong>They</strong> <strong>Are</strong>
</div>
<div>These four elders are extraordinarily resilient, funny, stubborn in the best way, and full of love. They are also special-needs adults who depend on each other and on us, and we do everything we can to help them live independently in the home they’ve had for decades.
</div>

</div>
<div>Uncle Chewy, a survivor of police brutality before Miranda rights even existed, has always been the rock of their household. He cooks, cleans, and helps care for his sisters, even while carrying his own trauma and disability.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Auntie Fidela, who is high-functioning, does her best to help bathe her two older sisters, watch their medications, and manage small parts of their budget.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Auntie Norma, age 59, walks with a walker and is developmentally about four or five years old. She loves her dolls, bright colors, and anything soft. She brings sweetness into every room she enters. She also LOVES singing and listening to music.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Auntie Elena is currently in another fight with cancer. She is in a wheelchair, going through chemotherapy again, and developmentally about eight or nine years old. Through all this, she still laughs, still prays, and still shows up as a warrior.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>They have survived more hardship in one lifetime than most families face in three. Yet they continue living independently, taking care of each other, and staying rooted in their home a home filled with memories of all our elders who came before them.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>How</strong> <strong>We</strong> <strong>Got</strong> <strong>Here</strong>
</div>
<div>After the passing of two of their brothers Uncle Robert (October 2021) from COVID complications and a stroke, and Uncle Pancho (July 2023) from a massive heart attack; their Social Security disability was suspended because they received all of Uncle Robert’s pension and retirement benefits, which put them temporarily over income limits.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Because of the sudden loss of their brothers, the cost of two funerals, a roof replacement, medical copays that Medicare and Medicaid do not cover, rising inflation, and ongoing federal budget cuts, their savings and pension funds have run out.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Uncle Robert was a lifetime Teamster, and his pension and retirement benefits were split among the siblings. When both brothers passed away, the system put the surviving siblings’ benefits on hold.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We have been fighting the government ever since to fix this. But with the shutdown, backlog, and delays in reopening, their income has been gone for months.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We were forced to request a mortgage forbearance, and even with that, the bills kept coming:
</div>
<div>•	past-due mortgage payments
</div>
<div>•	utility bills
</div>
<div>•	medical expenses
</div>
<div>•	transportation costs for cancer treatment
</div>
<div>•	the cost of seasoned firewood that heats their home

<div>Now, they are at the edge of losing the stability they’ve held onto for so long.

<div><strong>What</strong> <strong>We</strong> <strong>Do</strong> <strong>as</strong> <strong>a</strong> <strong>Family</strong>

<div>We take care of them in every way we can:

<div>•	mowing the lawn

<div>•	cleaning gutters
</div>
<div>•	grocery shopping when Uncle Chewy cannot drive due to illness or severe arthritis
</div>
<div>•	paying small bills when we can
</div>
<div>•	teaching them technology
</div>
<div>•	navigating medical appointments
</div>
<div>•	filing government paperwork
</div>
<div>•	hauling and stacking firewood
</div>
<div>•	guiding them through systems that honestly don’t understand families like ours

<div>My husband, my children, my sister, my brother-in-law, my niece and nephew, my mom, and my cousins Ricky and his wife we all pitch in. We do it with love. We do it without hesitation. But right now, love isn’t enough to cover the costs.
</div>

<div>We are trying to raise $5,000 to keep our Aunties and Uncle safe and stable while we wait for their disability income to be reinstated.

<div>It hurts to ask. We were raised not to. But the reality is simple and unforgiving: without help, our elders will fall deeper into a financial crisis they did not create and cannot fix on their own.

<div>They deserve better. They deserve dignity. They deserve safety. They deserve to remain in their home.

<div>My name is John Swift.  Recently my mother received a Kidney Transplant.  Her, and several others of our family members have been diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease.  She has lost her older brother and her mother to this disease, and was on home dialysis prior to this transplant.  One of her other older brothers Dennis, courageously and lovingly offered to donate one of his kidneys to her.  The doctors told them that the tissue match could not have been better!!!!  I cannot thank or appreciate this man any more nor could I ever express what this gesture meant to myself and my family.  Unfortunately, 2 weeks after the kidney transplant, mom was not feeling well and had to back to the hospital.  After an ultrasound of the new kidney, they had discovered that there had been a complete loss of blood flow to the new kidney.  She underwent an emergency surgery to try and revive and save the kidney.  Unfortunately the kidney had been without blood flow for too long and they were forced to remove it.  Mom continues to try and be strong and positive, but understandably discouraged and left wondering why.  God always has a plan and we remain positive that something, somehow, will come along and work out.  At this time, since it will be hard for mom to go back to work, we are looking for support for medical expenses and food for the next several weeks while she is recovering.  I also know that when my mother sees this funding campaign, she will be hesitant to accept help.  But if any of you know my mom, she has always been the one to hand you the shirt off her back instead of putting herself first.  It's definitely time for mom to get something back from all the years that she has spent paying it forward to others.

Support for Swift Family After Failed Kidney Transplant

<div>Hello everyone! My name is Jackie, and I'm a 25-year-old social worker living in Pittsburgh. I have been socially transitioning for about five years, and have been on hormones for almost four.

<div>My journey of understanding my gender identity and presentation has coincided with my growth into a more outgoing, happier, confident person that a high school version of me would've never even imagined to be possible. Even my aspirations as a social worker have been further motivated by the kindness and support that I have received from so many loved ones, whether it be family, friends, or the queer community at-large that acted as the emotional and social support that was instrumental to my ability to continue living as my truest self.

<div>In short, my discovery of my transness is probably the best thing that has ever happened to me. 

</div>

</div>

<div>After all the steps I've taken in my transition (name change, hair removal, social, etc.), what I've seen as the final piece of the puzzle is finally on the horizon: I have my top surgery scheduled for <strong>March 5th</strong>. As I've seen the endless attacks on trans individuals' access to affirming care here in the states,  well as finding myself in a transitional (pun not intended) part of my life, as well as my time under my family's health insurance running out this June, there were multiple reasons that I knew that there would be no better time to just go for it than right now.

</div>

<div>However, all of the stars have not been fully aligned for this process to be a walk in the park; primarily, I have been without a full-time job since June of 2025. Gig working has thankfully been keeping me financially afloat, but I knew that taking on something like top surgery financially was a huge risk. I have been plugging away, putting in as many hours as I can to build up as much funds as possible before the big day.

<div>However, two major factors have made the prospect of fully funding the surgery costs through this highly unlikely: severe winter conditions that make driving much harder, and my surgery date being moved up by two weeks.  For these reasons, after all the emotional and social support I've received from my community, asking for financial help for the first time would be a highly beneficial course of action. 

</div>

</div>

<div>UPMC estimates the surgery and accompanying fees will cost around <strong>$6,470</strong>; whether that's the final cost will be determined once it's all said and done, but it's the most solid number I have been given. There are also costs that come after medical expenses and aren't as easy to nail down, specifically: post-op clothing, pain medications, and enough saved money to cover all my bills and other necessities while I'm unable to work and earn income during recovery.  As I want to remain as transparent as possible about where the funds will be allocated and the relative unpredictability of those costs, I will set the goal at the estimated medical costs. The rest of the expenses, I feel confident in my ability to earn and save towards in the weeks leading up to the surgery.

<strong>SAVE QUEER CHOCOLATIER<br /><br /></strong>Queer Chocolatier is a small business located in Muncie, Indiana. It is one of the only sober LGBT+ spaces available to those who live in the area. The shop has fallen on hard times due to COVID-19, and will be forced to close due to rent and utility costs, which the landlord has refused to suspend.<br /><br />I am not personally affiliated with Queer Chocolatier, but my life has been positively impacted by the kindness that Morgan and Cheri have shown to me and my loved ones each and every time we enter their shop. When you walk in, you are greeted and treated like family. When you sit down with friends beneath the glow of Edison bulbs, basking in the aroma of freshly made biscuits and chocolate gravy, you feel right at home. <p>#BlackLivesMatter #WeDoHeal<br /><br />In the wake of George Floyd's murder is a long, painful month that’s an extension of a year that’s challenged us to our core.<br /><br />We need healing. We need justice. And that requires action.<br /><br />Systemic change requires prolonged effort, but we can also make an immediate difference for frontline communities. <br /><br />The Black Resilience Fund was launched on June 1st, 2020 to foster healing and resilience by providing immediate financial relief to Black Portlanders. Over $700,000 has been distributed to Black Portlanders since our launch, and we've also established a mutual aid network of over 300 active volunteers, delivering food boxes, performing yard work, providing emotional support, and more.<br /><br />The Black Resilience Fund is co-founded by Cameron Whitten and Salomé Chimuku. Cameron is a local Portlander who has more than 5 years of experience in nonprofit leadership and donation accountability. Cameron has served as the Executive Director of local nonprofits such as Know Your City, Brown Hope, and Q Center. Salomé has over a decade of experience in public sector work, working with organizations such as Portland State University, the Urban League of Portland, and Unite Oregon. She has served on many local social justice and advocacy boards and has worked for many statewide elected officials in the Oregon Legislature. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/48455998_1593566731471029_r.jpeg" alt="48455998_1593566731471029_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />We’re proud of everything the BRF team has accomplished with 100% volunteer energy.
