They just moved to Miami and have nowhere to stay yet. <strong>The mom and 2 children (1 and 4 yrs) are staying at the park till the father comes and picks them up after work.</strong> Then they go and sleep in the car. Aid for Family of Four Facing Cold Nights

<div>I am Meredith, little sister of Catherine who is an incredible friend, sister, mother, and DC area rockstar recently diagnosed with a ridiculously rare and aggressive CIC-rearranged sarcoma. Many of you have asked how you can help. To be honest, Cat needs your help to reduce the financial stress of this awful diagnosis.

<div>   Since March 22, when Catherine was diagnosed with an ultra-rare soft tissue sarcoma near her collarbone, she has faced not only a health challenge, but a financial one as well. Cat had to withdraw from her master’s program at George Mason University and cut back her hours at work to begin the fight for her life. On April 26 she underwent her first round of chemotherapy at a local hospital in Fairfax, VA but due to complications, she has continued biweekly treatments in NYC at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center with one of the few specialists in the world in this type of rare sarcoma.

<div>   The plan for the next few months is to continue chemotherapy to kill any possible metastasis of the sarcoma and to hopefully shrink it. In a few weeks, her doctors plan to perform surgery to remove the tumor, with as little impact on her bone as possible. Then Cat will need four to six more months of chemotherapy to assure no metastasis.

<div>   I have always admired my older sister, but never more than now, as I see her ready to take on the fight of her life. <strong>I want to invite you</strong> to walk with Catherine during this difficult time in prayer, in words, and in finances. With the costly, frequent transportation logistics to and from NYC, the expensive and specialized hotel stays near the cancer center, her high insurance deductible, and the many other added expenses required for such specialized treatment, this process extends beyond her financial means and will prove more expensive as the weeks and months go on.

Zoe reminds us every day of the love she has for the world and surprises us all the time with her positive personality. Zoe has so much love and care to offer to the world. One day we were at the Houston Zoo with Zoe, and we had a great day with her. That night when we were praying together, Zoe said “I want to pray for that little kid in the wheelchair that was crying so God can bring him love, toys, and happiness”. This is our brave loving little Zoe, and she is so precious. Please help our daughter in her journey to fight leukemia.

<div>We are raising funds for Zoe’s cancer treatment because she is designated as high-risk, and the MD Anderson Cancer Center transplant team said that we don’t have the financial clearance to proceed with her transplant. Also, the MD Anderson Cancer Center financial department said Zoe’s cancer treatment wasn’t covered by our insurance plan. So, at this point, we are responsible for the entire cancer treatment bill. Every donation no matter how big or small can make a difference in our daughter Zoe’s cancer treatment and transplant efforts. Your contributions will be used for the treatment, recovery, and rehabilitation of Zoe’s health. We received a transplant bill estimate of $397,000-$897,000 and there is a large deposit that we have to come up with. Zoe's cancer treatment bills are separate from the transplant bill. <div>On January Thursday the 5th 2023, our daughter Zoe returned to preschool and got sick with something. On Saturday she started showing symptoms of fever, fatigue, and lethargy. On Sunday she was very hot to the touch I noticed her heart beating very rapidly during the day while sleeping on the couch next to me. I put a pulse oximeter on her finger to find that her heart rate was 175bpm resting with a 104.5 fever. I called my wife to tell her that we needed to take Zoe to the hospital. When we got to the hospital, Zoe’s condition worsened and wasn’t taken seriously at the hospital. The doctor thought her condition wasn’t life-threatening, but we told the doctor that she had already had covid and RSV in the past. We explained that whatever sickness she presently had was worse than covid and RSV. Swab tests were performed, and all came back negative except the strep test which never came back positive or negative. The doctor remained convinced that it was viral pharyngitis even with the strep test didn’t come back positive. Even though Zoe’s skin was so pale and she looked terrible, she was discharged. The doctors’ advice was to give her plenty of fluids and a fever reducer, but her condition still worsened. We took her to the pediatrician on Tuesday to get a strep test done because the hospital’s test never came back positive or negative, and it came back positive right away. Amoxicillin was prescribed but it wasn’t enough for what she was sick of.

<div>On Wednesday, January 11th we had to rush her to the hospital in the Medical Center in Houston. After waiting 7 hours in the lobby of the hospital and then finally getting a room for Zoe, we finally got to speak to the doctor. The doctor was giving us the run around about her condition, she minimized her illness and what she was going through. She said that if it was her child that she would push fluids and give Tylenol accordingly. If we would have listened to that doctor, Zoe would have died. The doctor was reluctant to get blood work done because she said in her opinion that it was not necessary and that this sickness needed to take its course. I had a gut feeling that it was something more. I disagreed with her and gave her an order to get a whole blood assay panel done. She said it was a bit excessive for blood but then walked off. After some time, the nurses were in disbelief at her blood results because everything came back in red. They performed 2 more blood draws, some doctors were scratching their heads about what was going on with Zoe. All of a sudden, an African American lady showed up with no badge credentials demanding that our daughter needed critical care, saying loudly “LOOK AT HER, LOOK AT HER BREATHING FAST, LOOK AT HER SKIN AND EYES, SHE IS CRITICALLY ILL!! YALL, SHE NEEDS ATTENTION NOW!!” My wife and I believe that this lady was truly an angel because at that moment a team of doctors and nurses rushed in and started to create a makeshift ICU for Zoe. When I saw them bringing in the ventilator machine, I knew something bad was coming. Her blood pressure was like 45/30 and her heart rate was at 185bpm averaging and a very low white blood count.

<div>The doctors came back with a diagnosis an hour later. Zoe’s body had been going through SEPTIC SHOCK from SEPSIS which is deadly because she had no immune system. The strep bacteria ran rampant throughout her body. Shortly after that diagnosis, the doctors came in again and asked my wife and I to step outside to discuss something more important. We were mortified by what they had to say. We thought that they were going to tell us to call our family to come and see Zoe for the last time. The doctors took us into an empty room and gave us the news. Zoe was diagnosed with LEUKEMIA AML with a tumor protein 53 (TP53) genetic disorder. We fell to the floor crying. Zoe was rushed upstairs to the PICU for emergency treatment, and a day later transferred to MD Anderson Cancer Center for a higher level of critical care that she needed.

<div>As of January 11th, Zoe has been in the hospital which is day 63 here at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston Texas.

<div>Birthdays used to involve celebrations with my family.  My wife Jen and my amazing kids Jesse and Jaime would always make a big deal.  Not anymore. Almost 5 years ago, everything changed when my daughter, Jaime, was murdered in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in 2018. For the past few years, I simply could not celebrate. However, this year and going forward, I plan to celebrate again and to do so in ways that include honoring the memory of my daughter Jaime and her love of her dogs.

<div>After Jaime was murdered, it was our family dogs Charli and Cooper that helped our family to heal. In fact, at the time of the shooting Cooper was only four months old. Knowing how much our dogs meant to us, and to Jaime, has us taking on a new mission.

<div>Recently, my wife and I started a new initiative called PAWS OF LOVE, in partnership with Moss Creek Goldendoodles, to help support families like ours who have been directly affected by gun violence. Since our dogs played such a big role in Jaime's life and in our healing process, this program will pair families with furry friends to make indelible paw prints, during what will be one of the most difficult times of their lives. In addition to the dogs, we will also provide everything that is needed for the first year with the new dog.

Negus the flower man hospital fundraiser

She was recently diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, the supplemental therapy that aims to ease the negative side effects of chemotherapy, is not covered by her insurance. <div>Annely has been a symbol of strength, pure will power and amazing energy all of her life. Born in a small village in Eastern Europe, Annely became a refugee as a toddler because of her German heritage. She spent 3 long years in labor camps in Poland and the Czech Republic, crossing the countries by foot and in cattle waggons. After this horrific journey, Annely and her family were able to start a new life when they arrived in Dattenfeld, Germany, in 1946. Annely understands hardship like very few. She is the pillar of her family, which includes a special needs grandchild. We know that she is a fighter who will never give up.

<div>We were lucky to meet Annely when she taught German at Sunset Elementary School. Hundreds of students in Miami have been very fortunate to experience “Frau Hoffmann” in the classroom. She is so passionate about teaching that, even after retirement, she continued working as a substitute teacher for Sunset and supported the German program as a GIPA teacher. Many of her students are now young adults, but they still fondly remember Annely's engaging classes. They sang countless German songs together (do you remember "Die olle Flunder" or her own composition "Der Zauberfrosch"???). She practiced German verb conjugation by throwing a ball across the room. In summary, Annely was the example of an enthusiastic, engaging teacher who worked hard for her students every day. Earning her Master's Degree at 54, Annely showed all of us that lifelong learning should be a goal for everyone. She is a true icon of our successful program! Let’s rally around Annely to help her during this difficult stage of her life. Thank you so much!

<p>We're raising money to pay for medical bills and funeral cost.</p><p><br></p><p>&nbsp;Katherine was diagnosed with a severe type of congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome in utero at 20 weeks.  Katherine was born on July 10, 2013, and had her first open-heart surgery 9 days after birth. In addition, Katherine was born with an abdominal cyst, which was pushing against her bile ducts. This was obstructing bile from flowing normally, thus not allowing her bilirubin levels to drop. Therefore, Katherine's gastrointestinal doctor scheduled a cyst-removal surgery on August 18, 2013, which turned out to be a success. Katherine's bilirubin levels declined substantially 24 hrs post surgery.  However, there were more challenges ahead; Katherine's incision got infected. As a result, doctors had to perform a wound debridement surgery to allow her incision to heal properly. After being on antibiotics for almost 1 month, Katherine finally got discharged from Children's Hospital Los Angeles on August 30, 2013. Being home was an amazing feeling because Katherine was able to step out of the hospital for the first time in her life.  However, over the course of a few weeks, Katherine started displaying signs of heart failure (profuse sweating, frequent vomiting, skin color changes, and shortness of breath). Hence, Katherine got re-admitted at Kaiser of Los Angeles where we were given the terrifying news that Katherine was in heart failure. About a week after being observed in the pediatric unit at Kaiser, Katherine got transferred to Children's Hospital Los Angeles, which was ordered by her cardiac surgeon. Katherine underwent a heart catheterization at Children's Hospital to evaluate her current cardiac function. During the procedure, doctors were able to switch out her longer g-tube for a more practical g-tube called mic-key button. After being observed for 2 weeks, Katherine gets discharged again from Children's Hospital (October 30, 2013). Unfortunately, Katherine started displaying more signs of distress after 2 weeks of discharge. At this time, Katherine was a candidate of the second stage open-heart surgery (Glenn), which is designed to eliminate about 50 percent workload to the heart by re-directing blood flow from the superior vena cava to the lungs via the pulmonary vein. However, Katherine's lungs did not accept the new direction of blood, and her cardiac surgeon was forced to do an emergency surgery less than 48 hrs post surgery in order to reverse the Glenn procedure. Katherine went into cardiac arrest 48 hrs after the reversal was performed, and the team had to perform chest compressions to resuscitate her.  It took about 6 minutes to resuscitate her.  It has been more than 5 weeks since Katherine got admitted at CHLA, and her cardiac function has not improved.  She's on support medication to help restore her heart function; however, her echocardiogram screenings have demonstrated little to no progress.  If Katherine's heart does not improve in the next few weeks, she will have to get evaluated for heart transplantation. </p><p><br></p><p>Katherines heart could not get &nbsp;repaired. She went with The Lord 1/29/14. &nbsp;</p><p>We miss katherine deeply.&nbsp;</p>
