In Houston, he is being offered molecular therapy to eliminate the lymphoma and virus; this treatment has proven to be very successful in these cases. Mateo's story Mateo was born with biliary atresia, a very serious disease that can lead to liver damage and cirrhosis, both of which can be life threatening. He had surgery when he was 3 months old, but the disease had such a severe impact on his little body that, at 9 years old, he needed a liver transplant to stay alive. With the transplant came immense joy. It seemed like the battle had been won. <img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/20077556_1494592964,0832_funddescription.jpeg" alt="" width="100%" /> Together with his parents, he learned to live in peace, enjoying every moment and managing his disease with joie de vivre, without suffering. His parents never treated him like a victim of his disease. They didn't overprotect him. And Mateo grew up to be strong, full of life, happy. He never got sick, despite his low defenses. After the transplant, he was in excellent shape. Three years later, he was diagnosed with post-transplant lymphoma and the problems returned. Mateo conquered the disease once again. But the lymphoma has come back twice since then. Mateo and his family and friends kept fighting and triumphing. <img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/20077556_1494592892,8149_funddescription.jpeg" alt="" width="100%" /> A gladiator in the face of cancer In August 2016, a very troubling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was detected. Mateo underwent 8 months of chemotherapy with the courage of a gladiator. After one week of chemo, he even got up the strength to join his friends for "sweet-fifteen" parties, a rite of passage in Argentina. That's Mateo. A lover of life, a fighter. In December, everything looked good. Everyone celebrated, but a little spot held a cruel surprise. And in February the cancer came back in full force. In Argentina, there was nothing more to be done. Now, Mateo is in Houston, at Methodist Hospital. A los tres meses de edad lo operaron, pero la enfermedad afectó tanto su organismo que a los 9 años necesitó un trasplante de hígado para seguir adelante. La alegría fue inmensa. Parecía que la batalla se había ganado. Junto a sus padres  María Bonamico y Alejandro Rush, a sus hermanos Juan Cruz, Lucas y Maggie, aprendió a vivir la vida con alegría, disfrutando lo mejor de cada momento, atendiendo su enfermedad y gozando la vida con su ánimo en alto, sin padecerla. Sus padres nunca lo trataron como enfermo ni lo sobreprotegieron. Y Mateo se hizo fuerte, grande, lleno de vida, feliz. Nunca se enfermo aún estando siempre con bajas defensas.  Luego del trasplante estuvo bárbaro hasta que tres años después sufrió un linfoma post trasplante.  Un gladiador contra el cancer En agosto de 2016 se despertó un linfoma no hodgkin muy fuerte y Mateo hizo 8 meses de quimioterapia con una actitud digna de un gladiador. Después de sus dias de quimioterapia juntaba todas sus fuerzas para sumarse a las fiestas de 15 con sus amigos. Así es Mateo. Un amante de la vida, un luchador. En Diciembre del 2016 creimos que Mateo se habia curado. Todos festejamos, aunque una pequeña manchita auguraba una cruel sorpresa. This represents a 14 percent increase over the previous decade and has doubled from the years 1895-1995. In 2016, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) released an unprecedented figure of 65.3 million people around the world who have been forcibly displaced from their homes. A figure that greatly exceeds the number of displaced persons in WWII. Among them are nearly 21.3 million refugees half of which are under 18 years old. Throughout the world there are 24 new refugees each minute. This situation has unleashed numerous volunteer and citizen-based efforts directed to providing immediate relief and aid to a situation out of control.
