<div>What's up everyone? My name is Edith, and I am one of 15,000 nurses who is currently on strike, as Mount Sinai, NY-Presbyterian, and Montefiore have not come to an agreement with NYSNA on a fair contract.

<div>Since October 2025, NYSNA has tried to negotiate with the aforementioned hospitals to preserve safe staffing ratios, protect our health insurance coverage, fair wages, and improved protections from workplace violence. However, administrators have refused to honor our demands; therefore, we had to make the difficult decision to go on strike starting on January 12th, 2026.

<div>As of today, we are on Day 16 of the NYSNA strike, and I am personally feeling the financial pressure due to the reduced income and lack of health insurance. Although my fiancé is still able to work as an MTA conductor, the high cost of living in NYC is too high to be able to live on a single income, especially with three young children and two cats. This is why <strong>I am asking for additional financial help.</strong> Any donations that you are able to provide can help with paying rent, utilities, doctor's appointments, medications, groceries, and any emergent expenses.

She is the wife of Maarten Tonneyck, a beloved mother, and a grandmother.

Help Thandi Fight Stage IV Cancer

<div>Greetings family, friends and all of our community, we  need your help. I, Chris, Johnny's loving longtime wife am setting up this account for Johnny. And yes, just to confirm, it really is me. Simply stated, Johnny has been on a long painful medical journey, having 4 surgeries and several medical complications, all of which you have shared with us.

<div>You have been supportive sending your loving thoughts and prayers and he has pulled through everytime, despite the occasional near death experiences while in surgery.

<div>Now we need a little more help.

<div>Johnny is now against the wall in his recovery phase. Because we live in gratitude, he shows up, suits up, and we both maintain a wonderful positive attitude through it all but the crippling pain that limits his ability to walk and or stand for more than 15 minutes at a time has created severe muscle atrophy and continuing loss of sensation in his arms, legs. The life giving cerebrospinal fluid has been greatly impacted by the spinal surgeries creating  serious problems. We have top notch insurance but the great physical therapy including high tech lasers, magnets and good ole fashion movement therapies he has been receiving is not enough. Also, as crazy expensive as it is, the insurance company has doubled his yearly rate, now refuses needed services and he doesn't have the option to switch companies due to "pre-existing"....! I even had to take my attorney to our recent meeting with the insurance executives. We cover all our responsibilities to make sure everyone is on the same page. His neurologist has stated that it is a must he do Aquatic therapy, Acupuncture and Medical Massage, all of which are not covered by insurance. Also, his insurance rejected a Brain angiogram last week, which is critical to his recovery process. If you recall, his brain waves suffered a full on collapse 2 years that ended up in an unexpected ER visit and consequent hospital stay.

<div>As a reminder, he has had 2 Lumbar surgeries, which created permanent structural damage, an emergency foot surgery and 1 cervical spine surgery last year. The cumulative effects of stress, both physical stressors and economic stressors created by out of pocket expenses area all catching up.

<div>For the first time in his life, Johnny is feeling afraid in his process since more difficulties keep showing up due to the impact on the lifegiving flow of the cerebrospinal fluid .

<div>He is the greatest Biomechanic we all know and love. Johnny has been working hard, keeping his spirits up, he looks good and is seemingly better, but if he doesn't get the necessary physical therapies required, his body's complicated neurological and physical health sustaining internal mechanisms won't be able to kick in to keep him on the road to improvement.

He got re-elected to his seat representing Hampton in the statehouse. Then he got elected House minority leader.

<div>Through this whole ordeal, Renny said he had two jobs: leading the Dems and fighting cancer. His other priority is being with his family. “I want to stick around as long as I can still spread some love and learn a little,” he says. Through the ebbs and flows and setbacks in his care, Renny focused on his bucket list of legislative projects. And he and his wife Kristie and daughters Marie, Elizabeth and Grace have delayed offers of help. Until now.

Stepping Up for Renny and the Cushing Family

Both of my parents, Desmond &amp; Leah Tutu, were teachers. It was before apartheid laws segregated schools and forced an inferior education on black children: bantu education. My parents resigned in protest. They vowed that their children would never be subjected to bantu education. Each year we drove thousands of kilometers from our home in the Eastern Cape to boarding schools in Swaziland. The education we earned has been a bridge to opportunity for my siblings and me, Mpho Tutu van Furth. With my education I have been able to become a priest and author. I was founding CEO of the Desmond &amp; Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation and lead that institution from a dream into a multi-project and multi-million euro operation.<br /><br />Rather than a bridge many South African children experience education as a barrier to opportunity. It is more than two decades since the end of apartheid. The bantu education curriculum is gone but for many poor black children reality hasn't changed. Almost one third of children who have attended a South African school for six years cannot read. The patterns of poverty, inequality and unemployment that apartheid created are entrenched by the current system of education.<br /><br /><strong>THE SUNRISE PROJECT WILL CHANGE THIS!</strong><br /><br />With this project we will transform the education system so that every child in South-Africa will have a quality education; one community and one grade level at a time. Our project begins in one of the poorest communities with grade R teachers and learners (ages 4-6). The sunrise spreads daylight gradually until the whole land is bathed in sunshine. The transformation in the school will be like a sunrise, each year more grades and more children will benefit. As the first cohort of students continues their education, grade level by grade level their schools will be transformed. <br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/38772166_1556441607.4705_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br /><u>Our  initial project will be realised in six phases:</u><br /><br />1. In the preparatory phase we will identify  communities with, at most, three public primary schools in which to work. The communities will be rural or semi-rural. The schools will have engaged leadership. Ideally we will also be able to identify an effective local NGO partner who shares our vision. <br /><br />2. In this phase we will select the schools and community in which to work. We will make a preliminary evaluation of the scope of work to be completed.<br /><br />3. In this phase  we must  secure buy-in and support from key stakeholders including parents and community; teachers; school leadership; local government; education department and students. Develop a training plan and materials for teachers and school leadership. Recruit trainers, mentors and master teachers. Decide on the construction and equipment plan for the physical plant.<br /><br />4. In the fourth phase construction and fit out will be completed and any necessary teacher training will commence.<br /><br />5. The first grade R enters fit-to-purpose classrooms to meet enthusiastic, accomplished teachers who are members of a community committed to school improvement.<br /><br />6. Phase six begins the second and subsequent years.<br /><br />For one community the project will be completed in eight years. In the first year of of the project we will ensure that every child entering grade R in our  target community enters the kind of classroom that any one of us would want for our own children. We will offer their teachers skill-building workshops and the mentoring support they deserve so that they are fully equipped for their crucial role in moulding our future leaders. In the second  and subsequent years the focus will be on the next grade level thus the transformation progresses with the child.<br /><br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/38772166_1556447843319641_r.jpeg" alt="38772166_1556447843319641_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />Our budget for the first two phases of the plan is €50 000. This includes personnel, travel, communications, website development and expert evaluation of the physical plant and assessment of teaching staff. Our request for €10 000 covers expenses for the first phase of the project. The cancer is inoperable, but we are planning to do everything possible medically. Jim has been active and healthy in the past year, perhaps healthier than ever, bike riding 80 miles a week. Suddenly being faced with this diagnosis has been challenging to get our heads and hearts around. <br /><br />Nevertheless, that is what we are doing--moving forward through what needs to be done and together, with the experts, choosing how to best do exactly that. He has had focused laser radiation on the small brain tumor as a first step in this process.  There was another biopsy of a lung nodule to try and further identify the biomarkers and formulate a more targeted treatment protocol.  His first chemo treatment was November 30th. <br /><br />We are so grateful for the outstanding medical care and facilities in the Los Angeles, CA area where we currently live. (We are here for Jim's amazing project as the architectural  quality control manager for the new LAX terminal.) <br />We are determined to do all that we can for Jim’s healing. To promote this, we are utilizing conventional treatments and integrative medicine--all supportive therapies, simultaneously. We have found an excellent integrative doctor who is proficient in working with the conventional oncologists and has been doing so for the past 35 years. Together we are developing a synergistic plan to combine all expertise available to support Jim in the best way possible. <br /><br />While our insurance is covering most but not all of the standard medical care, this holistic approach demands a tremendous amount of energy--physical, emotional, and spiritual. In addition, it is demanding a significant amount of out of pocket finances.  We are utilizing all of our personal assets to cover what we can, but this will be a prolonged treatment program for Jim’s healing. <br /><br />So... we are starting this GoFundMe campaign to ask for financial donations from our family and community. For those of you who have asked how you can offer support, monetary contributions are most needed and would be greatly appreciated, if you are able. Support Jim Shugart's Healing Journey

A year ago Barbara Dunfey was diagnosed with Stage III C: Colon Cancer. She had surgery, which went well. The doctors thought they got all of the cancer, but recommended she take the pill form of chemotherapy as a precaution. She miraculously worked this entire time and through the summer and most of the fall! This past October she had her follow up with her doctor and they found that the cancer had metastasized to her liver. The Friday before  Christmas she underwent Radio-embolization to help kill the liver tumors. She started having abdominal pains which the doctors could not diagnose. She had a P.E.T. Scan on January 14th which revealed more cancer in the abdomen. She is opting for aggressive I.V. Chemotherapy at this time.<br /><br />She has not been able to work this winter. We would like to raise money to ease the stress of covering exorbitant out of pocket medical expenses, plus food, rent, and utilities, so that she can stay in her apartment. Any amount would be so helpful and much appreciated.<br /><br />Tish, Les, Winnie, Taty and Derek, who live close by, have all been there to drive her to appointments, procedures, and errands this past year. Catherine will be coming to help her out at home and drive her to chemotherapy  appointments next week and will be staying with her for awhile.<br /><br />Barbara (Mom, Babs, B.A.D., Meemster, Mimi) is as strong and independent as she has always been and we believe she will pull through this.
