<div>This past weekend the most catastrophic tragedy imaginable befell our community and we lost three cherished Islanders. Five year old Kinsley Grubb, three year old Sawyer Grubb, and their grandmother, Sharon Bukulmez, were taken from us and there are no words to accurately describe the sense of loss and sadness that is blanketing our community.

<div>Kinsley and Sawyer Grubb lit up the lives of their parents, Peter and Becca, their grandparents, their aunts and uncles and cousins, their teachers, and their friends. Pete and Becca are incredibly hard working parents, trying to create the best life for their young family. The profound devastation they must be feeling is nothing that we can understand or make sense of and the collective hearts of all of us are breaking for them.

<div>Sharon was the kindest person I've ever known. She would quite literally give you the shirt off her back. She used her smile to lift others. Her selflessness shined in so many ways, through her work at MDI Hospital, her friendships, her volunteerism, and her family. She listened, she cared, she gave - all the time. Where she beamed brightest, however, was in the love of and care for her two grandchildren. There was absolutely nothing she wouldn't do for them. Her absence will leave a palpable hole in this community forever.

<div>Our goal in this campaign is to assist the family financially so they can focus their energy where it belongs, on grieving and remembering and finding a way forward. So many of us want to help the Grubb family and though we all want to wrap them in a big community hug, the time for that is not right now. For the moment, we need to express our love and sorrow by supporting them with generosity and space. We cannot take the pain away from this beautiful family, but we can help in other ways, including financially, to ease the immense burden that lies ahead.

Help the Grubb Family Through This Heartbreaking Time

<div>My name is Bo Greene and I am asking for help on behalf of Eddie Monat (Diver Ed) and Edna Martin (Captain Evil.) Like many of you, my life has been greatly enhanced by Eddie and Edna. They are incredibly generous, wonderful humans. And right now they need help. I'm hoping that people far and wide can help make a huge difference in easing the personal and financial burden our beloved friends are facing.

<div>Edna has been diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. Obviously this news has rattled her and Eddie to the core and for the past couple weeks, they've been both trying to make sense of this news and also figure out next steps. Edna spent several days at MDI Hospital and is now at home with a drain in her abdomen. She remains her positive, charming self, but the reality of what lies ahead is hard. She will be starting chemo this week and will have at least four rounds (treatment then 3 weeks off), perhaps more. There is also a surgical likelihood, but it depends on how the chemo works.

<div>The implications of this news on Eddie and Edna are profound,  emotionally, logistically and financially. Neither Edna or Eddie are able to work right now, and their main source of income, the Dive-In Theater, will likely have to be on hiatus for this season. Edna is irreplaceable in their business as she is the captain, naturalist, reservations organizer and logistics coordinator. It is unrealistic to think the trips could run without her, and this is huge blow to them as a family. With no income coming in, and potentially enormous costs coming up, they really need our help.

<div>The goal for this appeal is currently set at $100,000. We have no way of knowing whether it will be enough, but it certainly will not be excessive. The money raised will be used for uncovered treatment costs/copays/deductibles, travel expenses for non-local treatment, animal care (2 dogs, a cat, a bird and a horse), and house expenses. Eddie and Edna work together in their business and losing both of their incomes for the foreseeable future is an enormous source of uncertainty and fear. All of their energy will be needed to try and fight this cancer and anything we can do to alleviate other drains on them will be crucial.

<div>Eddie and Edna have impacted countless lives here on MDI and elsewhere. For decades they have taught people about the creatures of the North Atlantic and the importance of preserving the ocean's integrity. With love, humor, knowledge and passion, they've provided thousands of people of all ages, from all over the world, with information and inspiration. They don't make a ton of money through their work, but they impact a ton of people in a profound way. Beyond the Dive-In Theater, they are long time community stalwarts, volunteering their time and services in countless ways from scuba instruction to boat and mooring rescues, to coastal cleanups to intake cleanouts and so much more.  Honestly, it's hard to imagine our community without their constant presence, improving lives and ecosystems with endless passion, commitment and humor.

Help our Superheros, Edna and Eddie!!

Hi, my name is Tiana, and my better half Ryan MacLeod had an unfortunate accident while hiking in Acadia this weekend causing him to break his leg in two places (his fibula and tibia). He was close to the summit when it happened &amp; the injury was so severe that search and rescue responders were absolutely necessary to get him to the hospital. After his rescue and an ambulance ride, he received care at MDI Hospital where we learned of his exact injuries which led to surgery that night. Ryan is a carpenter by trade and will be out of work anywhere from 1-2 months (if all goes well) which is a devasting blow. Ryan is an incredibly hard worker and truly loves what he does, aside from the financial burden being unable to work is going to be tough for such an active guy. For those of you who know him, it is evident the love and selflessness he shares with this world. Ryan never asks for help but after a year of us navigating work loss due to my illness this injury puts us in a tough spot financially. We are asking our community for support in raising funds to help with medical bills and living costs while Ryan focuses on healing. To say this last year has been incredibly tough on us is an understatement. Although our minds are positive, we can recognize there is a tremendous need here so from the bottom of our hearts we ask you, if you’re able to donate or share the link for this GoFundMe it can help us be at ease and focus on Ryan’s needs moving forward. HELP ALBERT & STINKY KEEP THE BUSINESS

We all come from community, and we all exist in one, or often more communities in our adult lives. I am the single child of a single woman who has had two serious relationships with men in her almost 60 years and lost both of them to heart failure. I come from a strong network of hard working people who supported my mother as neighbors, friends, and coworkers and I feel close sense of community with my large extended family.<br />However, I have also felt like someone who has never landed, who has never fully belonged, blended, or "found my people". I had a father until I was three, I identify with children of single mothers. Struggle was familiar to me as a child, my mother working many hours to send me to better schools, play on teams, and pursue my passion for music. I have been close with the financial thick and even more so with the thin. Always feeling like a grandfather clock's pendulum, or a tennis ball at Wimbledon, never resting.<br />I yearn to create my own community, my own team of like minded, similar hearted people. The NOLS course I am aiming for will be a clear path to doing so. Three months in the wilderness building bonds with the classmates around me, and of bonding with my self will lay the groundwork for creating those human connections in nature everywhere I go. This course will give me the physical skills, intellectual knowledge, and emotional stamina to guide others through wildernesses in which I can facilitate friendship, learning, and self reliance. I want to call forth communities around me built on trust and respect, that have a depth and breadth that can only come from the energetic exchange we have when out of doors with our minds open and cell phones turned off. The community building ripple effect of this course could be trans-continental, if I'm very lucky.<br />I believe that living, breathing, human resources are often our best. I am asking you to exchange some energy with me, and with every life I touch after completing my NOLS outdoor teacher course. In our society, there are certain communities that take money to join. There's equipment, travel, tuition, and more. I need money to enter a community that will enable me to create natural and wild spaces for many who don't have the privileges that we enjoy.<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.nols.edu/courses/spring-semester-for-outdoor-educators/" target="_blank">NOLS spring semester course for outdoor educators</a>  takes place in Wyoming and Utah from February to May, teaching me basic backpacking and hiking skills, but also involving backcountry skiing, avalanche testing, whitewater canoeing, canyoneering, and rock climbing. After completing this course, I will be Wilderness First Responder and Recreation Level 1 Avalanche certified, and I will also receive college credit for the terms I am away from COA (after paying a fee for transferring these credits in, of course). <br /><a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-78YiArUaA8dgnpk0eqWnJr0Y2tLhg3v2u1uFwVQFbk/edit" target="_blank">My NOLS semester</a>  begins with a <strong>10 day Wilderness First Responder course</strong> at NOLS' Three Peak Ranch in Boulder, Wyoming. After that, <strong>the winter section begins, lasting 15-21 days</strong> throughout several Wyoming mountain ranges. I will learn the basics of backcountry skiing, skiing with a sled, snow camping, and winter ecology.<strong> The next 16-18 day portion will be spent canoeing</strong> in Utah, on either the Green, Yampa, or San Juan Rivers. I will learn river camping techniques, river hydrology, simple rescue techniques, and canoeing techniques of all levels - in order to progress from traveling in flat water into whitewater rapids. <strong>The canyon section lasts for 23-30 days </strong>in the canyon country of the Colorado Plateau in southeastern Utah; there, I will learn to lead groups in a desert environment and also about the human and natural history of the environment around me. During this section, I have the option of completely a solo section - being completely alone in one area for 36 hours. From canyoneering, we will <strong>rock climb for 20-26 days. </strong>Climbing camps become our base camps; we'll set up tents, establish a kitchen, and stay in one place for the duration of the section. <br /><br />This course is everything I’ve ever dreamed of learning and doing, but I never had the resources or courage to attempt something like this, until now. I originally thought I was going to receive a bit more in financial aid, but unfortunately reached the limit on the one loan that applies to this course. And even with a scholarship from NOLS, the course is still incredibly expensive, but I’m willing to put every penny I’ve earned over the summer into it. I worked two jobs for the entire summer, in hopes of saving enough money, and even though I’ve saved a decent amount I also have to pay for travel fees, <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IEhYXOyLz4J9v0bij8Yp0gM7zcXemibOwKirnnH_-TI/edit" target="_blank">gear</a>  for the course, and the transfer of credits. Basically, I can’t afford this on my own, and I’m attempting to reach out to family members, but I am desperately reaching out to my community as well through this GoFundMe campaign. Any contribution helps, and I promise in return to write letters and give updates on this trip when I’m not completely in the backcountry.
