<div>My cousin and his wife, Jon and Jess Billings, recently experienced a devastating loss in the Spokane Area Fires. In a matter of moments, their home, all their belongings, their beloved pet, and many other homes in their neighborhood, were taken by the flames, leaving them in shock and heartbroken. The emotional and financial toll of this tragedy is, and will continue to be, overwhelming. They are facing the daunting task of starting over from scratch, helping their two young children adjust and go back to school soon, and trying to heal from this traumatic event. All of their close family members in the area are also evacuated and the fires continue to be an evolving and precarious situation for everyone involved.

Help the Billings family rebuild after devastating fire

<div>On Monday, January 3, 2022, our beautiful mother, Rose Yee Nicklas, was skiing with our father at Grand Targhee Resort (GTR). Our parents practice ‘defensive-skiing’ and ski close together, constantly scanning for downhill skiers and obstacles, and ski slow (4-6 mph) with short, coordinated turns. On their last run of the day, a reckless skier in a ‘tuck’ racing position, going at least 30 mph, sped over the tails of our dad’s skis, narrowly missing him before colliding with our mom as she was coming out of a right turn. Mom never saw the skier coming as he hit her from behind on her right side. The force of the impact launched her into the air and pushed her 20-25 feet downhill before collapsing in a heap.

<div>Our dad and some other Good Samaritan skiers quickly came to her aid while the uninjured perpetrator refused to help or show any remorse. Ski Patrol arrived shortly after to provide first aid and assess Mom’s injuries. Mom was swiftly moved to the GTR Helicopter Landing Zone to be life-flighted to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center (EIRMC) in Idaho Falls, ID, for what everyone assumed to be a badly broken right leg. As our dad was making the 1.5-hour drive to EIRMC, the Emergency Room surgeon called him, and we then learned that the situation was much more dire.

<div>Mom’s life-threatening injuries include a <strong>collapsed lung, pulmonary contusion, and lacerated liver along with a broken scapula, multiple broken ribs, shattered tibia and fibula, broken wrist, and possible concussion.</strong> It took four surgeries over the course of four days to stop her internal bleeding. The ER surgeon stated that he had never seen such traumatic injuries of this nature coming from a ski resort. He stated her injuries were more consistent with a patient in an automobile accident. <strong>As of January 12, 2022, Mom is still in the ICU at EIRMC, has undergone six surgeries, and currently has no recollection of the incident.</strong>

<div>We are incredibly grateful that Mom is still here with us and now realize that her road to recovery will be long, hard, and expensive. Luckily, our mom is tough as nails and will be able to handle the physical burden, but we are especially devastated that this tragedy occurred just as Mom a<em>﻿</em>nd Dad started the retirement that they had worked so hard for and carefully planned. <strong>Donated funds will go towards Mom’s extensive medical bills to repair the injuries caused by the heartless skier’s actions, with the hope of giving our parents the happy and comfortable retirement they deserve.</strong>

Help #ResilientRose Recover from Ski Injuries

For those of you that don't know Jeremy Smith is battling COVID-19.  <br /><br />November 4th Jeremy was admitted to the hospital with flu-like symptoms. Upon further testing it was discovered he had coronavirus. He was immediately admitted to ICU where they put Jeremy into medically induced coma and put him on a ventilator. <br /><br />He had one hour to call all friends and family to say he loved them and goodbye in case he didn’t make it through. One hour to try to get all his affairs in order while trying not to panic, wondering if he would survive this. <br /><br />During his stay in the ICU, it was a rollercoaster, and because of the lockdown no family could visit. Each day family called and called to find out how he was doing. Somedays the nurses said he wasn’t doing well, and they couldn’t say for sure if he would survive this or not. They used many experimental treatments that will have unknown long term effects. One was an experimental convalescent plasma treatment. The others were remdesivir and dexamethasone. He had many scares while on the ventilator as well, they had found blood clots forming in his lungs, infections flairing up and his pancreas is having problems. <br /><br />On the 19th day of being on the ventilator, the doctors have to make a decision on what to do with a patient.  Staying that long on a ventilator is not a permanent solution. They called his family on the 19th day and said his breathing had still not improved enough and that they would have to perform a tracheotomy. This is not the news anyone had hoped to hear. As faith would have it, Jeremy was blessed with an amazing ICU nurse on the 20th. She called his family and said, I’m going to get him off of this ventilator today, no matter what. She did it and Jeremy made it through.  However, Jeremy still has a long hard struggle in front of him.  <br /><br />Jeremy's is about to embark on tremendously difficult journey of healing and rehabilitation. <br /><br />Jeremy's treatment included heavy sedation, a ventilator, feeding tube, multiple iv's and an induced coma for 20 days. All of which have difficult and lasting side effects.  <br /><br />PTSD, muscle atrophy, speech therapy, physical therapy, are just the beginning. Jeremy will have months of rehabilitation ahead of him, and quite possibly a lifetime of trama and lung damage from this experience. Jeremy is just barely able to start speaking again. He has months and months of rehabilitation to endure and life long health issues as a result of this incredibly destructive virus. <br /><br /><br />Jeremy is a loving father to his 3 sons Kobe (15) Bryant (13) and Griffen (10) and partner to his girlfriend of 10 years Kaycee . Jeremy has obviously been unable to work and his future with his company is in doubt.   With the holidays coming up and huge financial burden from this upon them, Any help would be greatly appreciated <br /><br />Funds raised from this GoFundMe will be spent on:  Hospital bills.  Past due bills due to Jeremy's inability to work and earn money.  Construction at Jeremy's house building and adding rails, steps and stools, in order to make his home livable for a person that’s disabled and in recovery.
