Help Toni and Randy Rebuild Their Home

<div>Hey everyone! Recently my sister Sarah was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. It started as a small spot on her nose, but progressed quickly beyond just a strange little sore. She quickly made an appointment with a surgeon and underwent treatment to remove the cancer and reconstruction of the skin on her nose. The treatment was successful and the healing process has begun. She might end up with a lightning bolt shaped scar along the front of her nose which I think will add to her sweet, but bad ass persona. Like any medical procedure, the cost was expensive. She was unable to get financing for the operation so I'm reaching out to friends and loved ones that may be willing to help with the procedure and future treatment costs. Being diagnosed with cancer or any serious disease can be traumatic for profound reasons, but Sarah is being positive and appreciating all the beautiful things in life. My wonderful Mom, Susie and Sarah's awesome husband Curtis are there with her to support her through this unexpected situation. Thanks so much for reading this! <div>Belia Berrios grew up on Shotwell and 21st Street, in San Francisco's mission district. Born in 1962, Belia was the first daughter of Jesus and Genevieve Vigil (owners of Vigil's Club on 21st and Bryant). Belia was incredibly active in her community and in 1978, at the age of 16, she and five of her neighborhood friends started a club known as "The Folsom Park Home Girls" where she proudly served as club president.

<div>Belia met her first love Steve Berrios one day on one of her trips to Folsom Park. The couple later married and had 3 beautiful children together; myself as the oldest, my sister Crystal who gained her wings too soon and my younger brother, Steven.

<div>Update December 23, 2022. This fundraiser was originally started in July, and we hit our original goal of $10,000. Now, in December, we are raising an additional 10,000 for Lily, and the total goal has been increased to 20,000. That would still amount to less than a dollar an hour for all of the work she has put in, but it would be something to help out with her bills. Thank you to everyone that has chipped in.

<div>I'm James Branson, founder of the Facebook group, Lost Dogs of King County, a group with 31,000 members.  At least 10,000 dogs are reunited with their families every year through this group.  It is a vital community asset.  Our main goal is to help the dogs, but if you count the value of the dogs we keep out of shelters, getting them home and avoiding shelter stays, we probably save the county hundreds of thousands of dollars.

<div>Recently, I posted that I am on vacation from my work at Three Retrievers Lost Pet Rescue, from July 20th to August 1st.  It is so unusual for me to take time off that people were sending me messages asking me if something was wrong.  You know you work too much if people think it's weird that you take time off.  I am taking time off because the heat makes it too hard for my dogs to work, and also so I can get some other things done. Just today, I realized that in all the years Lily Burns has worked at Lost Dogs of King County, as an unpaid volunteer, she has never taken a day off.  I think I remember one time when she took like eight hours off.  She works 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, for free.  She doesn't do this because she is independently wealthy and she just happens to have a ton of free time on her hands.  She helps lost dogs every day because she is good at it, and because she can't not help a lost dog in need.  She has never asked for money, but her financial situation is very lean.  She misses work for her own business so she can volunteer for the community.

<div>If Lost Dogs of King County was a business and I was the owner, I would be in jail for the inhumane hours that Lily Burns works.  Of course, I don't ask Lily to work all day every day.  In fact, I frequently suggest that she take time off, but she doesn't listen to me.  If LDKC was a business and Lily was an employee, I would probably need to pay her at least $100,000 a year for the hours she works, not counting benefits.  If Lily were paid for the lives she makes whole, reuniting families with their dogs, well, that is priceless.

<div>I set a goal of $10,000 for Lily for the remainder of 2022, not because I feel it adequately compensates her for her time or the worth of her work.  $10,000 is just a small fraction of what she deserves.  A main reason I set a goal of $10,000 is that it would be so easy for a group of 31,000 people to do.  It's just 33 cents per member.  Probably, there aren't 31,000 active members.  Maybe only 10,000 people use this group on a regular basis.  That's still just a dollar per active member for all of Lily's hard work.

<div>This is completely voluntary.  Lily has never asked for any money for all of her hard work.  The group of course would always be available to anyone who needs help with a lost dog, whether they chip in or not.  I just thought it would be the least we could do to show our appreciation for all that Lily does, day in and day out, for years.  If Lily received ten cents for every time she had to delete a comment or post that violated the groups stated rules, we would have to pay her a million dollars at least.  I hope you will chip a little something to show our appreciation for Lily.

<div>I don’t know all of the details but on May 21, 2023, Rocky, Bobby’s dog, bit Bobby’s face, around the nose area, which caused him to go to the hospital and is in the process of going into surgery.

<div>Tamsen, his girlfriend, has been a huge help and was with him the whole day at the hospital taking care of him. Marc, our brother, has been taking care of Rocky as it was a traumatic experience for him as well.

<div>As most of you know, our Mom, Patty Flanagan has always been a hard working single mom. In April of 2017 our mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a mastectomy in May and then went through chemotherapy and radiation which spanned into February 2018. Due to complications with her irradiated skin, she finally finished her breast reconstruction and an abdominal repair in 2021. Since then she’s done her best to get a good job working in property management, she’s rents a cute home in Tacony, and has even started her own led testing business. She’s busted her ass to do cleaning jobs on the side and also worked a catering job on nights and weekends. In fact, prior to her recent health issues, she worked 23 days in a row without complaint. In July of 2022 at a check up with her surgeon, she was informed that a scan she had done a year prior (July of 2021) had something suspicious show up on her hip bone and no one flagged it. The same lesion had appeared to grow in a more recent scan and they wanted her to see her Oncologist. We met with an oncologist in August of 2022 who informed her that a petscan had shown she had lesions throughout her spine, in her shoulder joints, her lymphnodes in her abdomen, lungs, throat and worst of all they’ve done a lot of damage to her hip bone. Since August we’ve met with many specialists, she’s had to have a lung biopsy, a throat biopsy, shoulder surgery to repair a hole in the bone, radiation and just recently a full hip replacement. She hasn’t been able to lift her right leg since October, which has caused her recovery from said hip surgery to be a long and painful process. She spent an unexpected week in Temple hospital on Broad Street due to the fact that a pre-surgery x-ray revealed her hip had broken while waiting for surgery and she had a tumor in the incision site. She’s had to spend an additional two weeks at Moss rehab. During this time life has gone on around her, as it does, and she is in danger of becoming very behind on her bills. She was already struggling to make ends meet as her hip deterioration had caused a lot of pain in addition to the abundance of doctors appointments, scans, blood draws, and injections she’s had to endure, she hasn’t had the physical strength or the time to be able to devote to working full time. She has been staying with me, Melissa her daughter, and my family for two weeks leading up to her hip surgery and she will need to be here for another two weeks at minimum while she recovers. A nurse, occupational therapist, and a physical therapist will be coming out throughout the next two weeks to get her hip strong enough for her to return to normal life. She has such a long road left to go working with medicines to combat the cancer and figure out which one works best for her. We’ve decided to make this in hopes that we can make life a little less stressful for her at this time and let her just concentrate on healing and not so much time worrying about when she can return to work in order to pay her bills. We greatly appreciate any and all help.

<div>You may or may not know, in the fall of 2021, my dear friend Amy suffered a severe case of cat scratch fever (i.e., bacteria bartonella henselae) that had her hospitalized longterm and nearly took her life. The infection settled in her elbow where it deteriorated her joint, ate the bone, and infected her blood (sepsis). It took 2 surgeries, multiple courses of intravenous antibiotics, and months of physical rehabilitation to get her stable. She has enormous leftover medical bills as insurance barely covered a thing. Prior to this happening, she had a successful career as a hair stylist, which was destroyed as her arm is now permanently disabled. The medical bills coupled with inability to work have created serious ongoing financial hardships. The longterm financial and emotional strain of medical emergencies remain years later, and add to the trauma of a near death experience.

<div>This Valentine’s Day I ask that you please send Amy some love. If you could spare $10-$20, that you would spend on your sweetheart to help this sweetheart, it would go a long way to help her. If you can give more, even better! Amy is all heart! Plus, she and I will love you forever. This will go a long way to helping her be financially comfortable and set a course for a new life she hadn’t planned for. This Valentines, let’s show love to the most loving person we know!
