<div>How it all began:

<div>In July of 2025, I traveled back to Spain for the first time in ten years—to the day. I had applied to a flamenco guitar competition in Sevilla, unsure whether I would even be selected for the final round. After weeks of nervously checking my email each morning, I finally received the message:
</div>

<div>The day after playing a sold-out, self produced, solo concert in Brooklyn, I boarded a plane to Madrid and took the AVE down to Sevilla. I arrived with one full day to rest and prepare. On the morning of the competition, I woke feeling centered and ready to play on a Sevillian stage for the first time as a Mexican American woman.

<div>That exact day carried special meaning: it marked ten years since I first stepped foot in Spain, and my former teacher, whom I hadn’t seen since then, came to watch me compete. He met with me as I warmed up, offered last-minute advice, and helped calm my nerves. His presence was grounding and deeply moving.
</div>

<div>When the competitors drew numbers, I picked number one. I opened the competition. Once on stage, I stayed present and focused, smiling in little moments, reminding myself to enjoy this. I played the best I could, aware of small things I could improve, but proud of the performance as a whole.
</div>

</div>
<div>As I waited for the judges’ decisions alongside the other competitors, most of whom had grown up immersed in flamenco, I felt calm and grounded in whatever the outcome would be. I listened as winners were called in other categories. Then I heard:
</div>

<div>I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and pride. I had performed, competed, AND won in Sevilla before respected flamenco guitarists serving as judges, representing not only myself, but women, Chicanas, my family, and a broader diaspora that is still underrepresented in this field. I was honored to receive a one year scholarship to study at the Fundación Cristina Heeren.

Support My Flamenco Studies in Sevilla, Spain

<div>My sister, Miki White Alter, is courageously battling advanced Parkinson’s disease. As her condition has progressed, she has become unable to work for the past several years or complete her bachelor’s degree, and her need for care has increased rapidly.  She is also suffering from onset of dementia and needs 24/7 care.
</div>

<div>Miki is the daughter of well known flamenco artist Isa Mura and Warren White, guitar luthier. Miki and her husband, Dale, have been forced to live apart due to financial and medical necessity. Dale, who is 75 years old, must continue working in the Bay Area, while Miki currently lives alone in Redding. This separation has been devastating, especially as Miki now requires round-the-clock care and has only limited part-time assistance. Dale requires knee surgery but cannot take the time off of work to have surgery.

<div>Miki’s medical needs are urgent. She must be closer to Stanford Hospital to receive specialized treatment that could significantly improve her quality of life. At the same time, maintaining two households on Dale’s Social Security and wages is no longer sustainable. They are behind on essential bills, and recently their electricity was shut off due to lack of funds. They have no savings, no property to sell and own only one car as Miki cannot drive.

<div>In just six months, Miki has lost over 50 lbs. She is dangerously thin at 5'8.  Her health is fragile, and being alone places her at serious risk. Dale continues to work not by choice, but out of necessity, simply to keep them afloat. Miki and Dale are people of faith and are holding onto hope during this incredibly difficult time. They are both longtime members of Bethel Church in Redding. They believe that, with help, they can reunite, relocate closer to vital medical care, and restore some stability and dignity to their lives.

Support Miki’s Urgent Medical and Living Needs

<div>On December 20th, 2024, after over a year of declining health, our sweet friend and family member Alison Corbett was officially diagnosed with Stage 3 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. As a mom, a teacher, and a musician, she lived a very full life before this diagnosis. She loved her teaching job and her colleagues, spending time with her amazing daughter, Saturn, and going the extra mile to play gigs and record albums, taking her fiddle everywhere she went.

<div>Breast cancer is a different experience for everyone. Alison’s prognosis is not the best we could have hoped for—the cancer has spread to her lymph nodes and is currently inoperable due to the size and number of tumors—but there is hope! The good news is that it hasn’t spread to any other organs, so she is still completely treatable, and it will be possible for her medical team to remove all of the cancer cells. Alison will soon undergo chemotherapy for 16 weeks. If the tumours respond well to treatment, she will be eligible for surgery, and then radiation.

<div>Alison is fortunate to have insurance through her work and access to chemo through Canada’s healthcare system. Her supportive partner, Steve, will be able to get some time off work to care for her during treatment. She’s being treated by excellent doctors at the Grand River Cancer Centre in Kitchener and fully trusts their plan to get her back to everything she loves.

<div>The reality is that even with government and personal support in place, being sick is expensive. Traveling to and from London and Toronto for specialist visits has already cost a lot between gas, parking, and lodging. Alison will require a special diet and supplements, special equipment, clothing to protect her PICC line (a central IV catheter), and wigs, as she will lose her hair during chemo. This is on top of the thousands of dollars already spent on procedures not covered.

<div>Alison’s sick leave pay is less than what she would make full-time, she will lose any extra income from performing and recording that she was making before her diagnosis, and her partner will lose income while he takes time off work to care for her. Alison needs the strongest form of chemotherapy available, which means she has to isolate during treatment because it will destroy her immune system. This is why Steve is taking time off work, so he can safely isolate with her when she would otherwise be alone.
</div>

<div>Alison has lived a wildly beautiful and adventurous life. In her own words, “I have a lot to show for it. My life has zigged and zagged all over the globe, and my creative, generous, and humorous friends always have my back. I’m a lucky person in so many ways, and I still have a lot of life left to live. I look forward to being able to get back to the things and the people that I love!”. If you know Alison, you know that the way she describes her kin here is exactly how we would describe her: creative, generous, humorous, always having our backs. Knowing Alison means that you know what it feels like to be supported, cared for, held, and uplifted, and to roll over in fits of laughter! Now it’s our turn to rally as a community and support her in all the ways we can, helping her get back to everything she loves.

<div>Hi, my name is Briseyda Zárate Fernández and 28 years ago I took the risk of following my dream to become a professional Flamenco Dancer. I left my job as a school teacher and moved to Madrid alone on a shoe string budget. I did not have family support nor was I encouraged in any way to believe that I could ever achieve this. Despite the odds, I pushed forward with self-belief. Since then I've performed in Spain’s Tablaos &amp; Festivals, I’ve won awards and toured the US, California and my beloved LA where I've planted seeds, grown deep roots and cultivated a deep appreciation &amp; respect for Flamenco amongst my students and audiences.

<div>Gaining new skills &amp; growing in mastery is an important part of being a professional artist. Without this we burnout, or worse, we quit. Every year I devote 2-3 months to train in Spain, developing new ideas and gaining new skills to bring back to the US in the disciplines of Flamenco Baile &amp; Cante. <div>I've been an independent artist for 3 decades, I've sold my belongings, slept on couches and in addition wrote those grant proposals. Whatever it took. As a woman of color I learned that I have to over-work for everything, and this I have done. I learned that I must do it alone and feel ashamed and defeated should I need help. This has deeply impacted my ability to ask for support. I’m now healing this mindset. I can’t do it alone anymore because at this point it has taken a toll on my physical and mental health. It’s clear that if I am to keep thriving as an artist, I need support. Any amount to keep Flamenco alive in me &amp; through me is greatly appreciated!
