Kelly and Kimberly, two sisters our family is helping, are facing some really tough times. They live together in a house that has been damaged by a water line break two years ago. The damage caused mold throughout the home, making it unsafe and unhealthy. On top of that, Kelly has to carry water in and out of the house from her neighbor’s place, which is exhausting and difficult. Their yard was also heavily overgrown, but my husband stepped in to help clean it up, showing just how much our community cares. 
 
 
 Despite these challenges, Kelly and Kimberly remain hopeful. Their dream is to live in a camper by the lake, where they can have a safe and comfortable place to call home. We want to help them achieve this dream, whether it’s through repairing their current house or helping them move into a camper. Every dollar raised will go directly toward giving Kelly and Kimberly a fresh start, away from the mold and hardship.

Please help us find Jemini Posey, 21 yr. mother missing since January 7, 2024, from the Spirit Lake Tribe in Totten,  North Dakota. She is 4'8" approximately 125 lbs. We desperately need to bring Jemini home because her baby needs her.  Currently baby is safe with grandma, but needs help with costs to maintain baby's needs.  Anything helps please, baby needs diapers, wipes, cloths, towels, bottles, clothes, formula, baby food, etc. Baby is 7 mos old and growing. On Wednesday December 13th, Emma (2 years old) went to the doctor because of her inability to walk. After numerous tests and a three hour MRI, she was quickly life-flighted to the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital in Minnesota. It was determined that she has Neuroblastoma, a form of childhood cancer. The tumor has begun compressing her spine, which is causing her to be unable to walk or support herself. After arriving in Minneapolis, she was quickly given a round of chemo to help slow the progression of the tumor. She will undergo biopsies of both the tumor and her bone marrow to determine the stage of cancer she has. This will be a long road for Emma, as well as Aaron and Brandi. It is not known at this time how long they will need to stay in Minneapolis. Once Emma is okayed to go home, she will need to return to the Children's Hospital monthly for further chemo treatments, care and monitoring. Aaron and Brandi will be out of work for an undetermined amount of time and have many current and future expenses. It is not yet known if insurance is going to cover the life flight or the expensive cancer drugs, Emma requires. Please consider helping Aaron, Brandi and Emma during this difficult time. Thank you!

I found myself on FB scrolling my news feed as we all do on a  daily basis. I came upon a heartfelt and heartbreaking post by a man i went to High School with... Joe Forte. Now i didn't know Joe very well in H.S. It has been years since I have seen nor spoken to him. I do remember his smile and kind nature in H.S. When I read his post it broke my heart. I know when you read on it will break yours too. But, please read on... The thought is not a kind one when you are very ill and just trying to survive daily thing's in life that most of us take for granted. We all try to provide, care and give something to our families.  Say something as simple as a vacation. Yet, when you are sick it's the vacation you never got to go on or enjoy with your family because most of your life you have been too ill and unable too. For Joe the inevitable that we all think of and worry about ...our own mortality is his present reality. With today's medical expenses and living on Long Island we all know no matter where you live how expensive it is. it's a struggle to survive when you are gravely ill. Imagine if you had to  think of your own family with worry of how they will get by without you? That is a costly scary thought alone. To think of not knowing when or how long you have left to live and told potentially not long. How would you feel??? What if you had a wish to do something special with your family that most of us get to do at least once a year. Something as simple as a vacation. The one thing we work so hard for. Those moments to escape with our loved ones to some place to spend quality and precious time. For Joe time is just that...precious!! As you read his post you will see how precious his family is to him. As you read his word's below you will see what i did. He is a selfless man not writing of his own concerns for his health but for his "rock" his beautiful family. His wife and his two boys  who are ages 8 and 6. His youngest son is Autistic. Joe was diagnosed with stage IV Colon cancer.  I try to always put myself in someone else shoes. I also try to live my life to help other's and to do onto other's as you would hope someone would do for you. For in a world of uncertain... kindness can take only a moment. Joe's wish is to take his family on a vacation to Disney World. A vacation they are long overdue for and potentially his last vacation if they can get to go. For those who pay it forward, for those that know Joe, for those who are strangers that can relate in any way and can donate any amount small or large anything is  greatly appreciated. It takes unity, community, support and love to make a difference in the world or in this case Joe's life! Please read Joe's heartfelt word's and post below: I need to take some time to thank my ROCK Tina Reidy Forte. You have no idea how she supports me emotionally and cares for my healthcare needs. The things she has had to learn with medications and other procedures is beyond my explanation. Tina lives with the fact every day that someday, sooner than later, I will no longer be here. She does all of this while not only caring for me and my boatload of issues but she cares for our two children, an 8 year old and a 6 year old with autism. She doesn't talk about it much, if at all really, but I know she's scared to death of the difficult task of raising these boys on her own. It pains me that there is not a damn thing I can do about it. I appreciate the thoughts and prayers that you have all sent my wife but I ask you please when you hit your knees tonight that you say a special prayer for Tina. I plead with you that when I'm gone that you remember to think of her every day and that you don't forget her. She will need your encouragement and support even more than she does now. Tina is my best friend and my loving wife. The thought of retiring and moving somewhere warm, becoming grandparents together, being at our children's graduations, seeing the boys (or at least Gavin, we don't know what the future holds for Griffin) get married and just going on a family vacation every year things many take for granted does not exist for us. We have filled out an application with the Dream Foundation, a Make a Wish for adults if you will, to hopefully go back to Disney World. It most likely would be our last vacation together as a family. On the application the doctor had to approve it, it's part of the Dream Foundation requirements, there is a section where the doctor has to give her estimate of my life expectancy. It was the first time we have actually discussed how many months or years I have left. So now we know how much time I have left and what living on borrowed time will be. So today I fight, not for the end of my cancer because that would just take a miracle which we are still praying for, Im fighting for more time, I fight for time. Tina and I are so grateful for each and every one of you. This has been a hell of a journey. We are looking forward to the holidays. Come this November, it will be two years since my diagnosis. What a blessing it would be to go into the third year of this battle. All I can say what I know for sure, it would not be possible had it not been for my Tina. God bless her. Make a wish possible for Joe Forte

Around the end of July Mom was admitted to the hospital in Perham.  While in Perham her doctors found that she had damage to her liver and her kidneys weren't working like they were supposed to.  She was in the Perham hospital for 8 days until she started going into kidney failure and was transfered to Broadway Sanford in Fargo.  While she was there they gave her various meds to help her deal with her organ troubles.  She was discharged after 6 days at Sanford in Fargo on August 5th.   On August 9th she went to Perham for a schedualed check-up.  During that appointment they took labs from her.  While she was with the doctor her lab results came in.  The doctor told her the labs showed she had multiple organ failure and needed to go back to Fargo.  She was in Fargo for a total of 4 days during which the hospital inserted a pick line and started aggressively giving her vitamins and medications to help curn her liver and kidney failure.  It was during this stay they diagnosed her with Congestive Heart Failure.  She was discharged from the hospital on August 13th.  She was good for about 8 days after that.  She was given vitamins to keep her healthy and medications to help her eat and recover.  One med she was given was lactulose to help keep her ammonia levels low and off her brain.   Around the 22nd she ran out of the lactulose and called the DL pharmacy for a refill on lactulose and potassium.  She was told she has no refills and needed to call her doctor to get a refill.  This was at 1000 on the 22nd.  At 1830 we recived a phone call from the DL pharmacy stating she had lactulose ready for pick up, but by that time the ammonia had started to build up on her brain.  It is believed she went over 30 hours without a full lactulose dosage.  On the morning of the 23rd she started to appear very sleepy and a little confused.   Her mother and myself had pushed for her to go to the hospital all day because it appeared she wasn't imporving from the lactulose.  By that evening she was getting rapidly worse, so her family decided it was best to call an ambulance.  She was transfered to Perham who then transfered her by helicopter to the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis. On Thursday the 24th she appeared to be getting better.  Her nurses and doctors were giving her lactulose aggresively which removed a lot of ammonia from her body.  As of Friday the 25th she was doing much better and was able to move around with the assistance of a nurse.  The hospital called me at 0100 on the 25th to let me know that they had found patches on her lungs and which was giving her trouble breathing so she was being transitioned to the ICU where she would be put on oxygen to help her breath.  At 0237 she was intabated due to her breathing problems.  I arrived at the hospital around 1330 to see how she was doing.  The hospital said she had pneumonia and needed advanced care to deal with not only her lungs, but her liver failure, kidney failure, and congestive heart failure.  Her team met with me during this time and stated she was very ill and that she may not make it through this event.  it was on this day that they were able to remove most of the fluid from her lungs, but there was severe damage done to her aveoli which was making it very hard for her to breathe.  On the 27th they decided to lay her on her belly believing it would help her breathe easier.  It was at this time that they told me they wanted to start her on dyalysis to help remove some fluid from her body that had built up from her kidneys now working.  Because she had very little kidney and liver funtion, she had severe sceptecimia.  A scepsis level of 1 is ok and any level above that increases the rate of mortality, her's was over 5.  Today, August 28th, she is doing better but is still in critical condition.  Her nurses called it "critically stable".  Being put on her stomach along with a medication to open her blood vessels in her lungs helped her get absorb the oxygen she has needed.  They put her on her back around noon to see if her sepsis levels had dropped and to get a sample of the secreations in her lungs to see what the lung infection looks like and how to treat it. At this point medical staff are telling us she could go either way and we should be prepared for the worst.  We are asking for help to help keep her bills paid while she is in the hospital, to help her when she is out of the hospital while she is unable to work, and to help family get to the cities to see her.  This is a tough situation for her family and friends.  Any ammount helps and is beyond appreciated by her loved ones

Hi, my name is Jordan Cossette, and just yesterday I read a local news article that really had me both very saddened, and angry. In my hometown of Detroit Lakes, a terrible injustice, handed down by the majority of city council members, was passed. The act leaves two longtime Detroit Lakes citizens, (one a disabled veteran, and the other a senior citizen) in a very tough predicament. I have copied and pasted the article below, so you can get up to speed on the situation. I just cannot believe that our city council has actually become so heartless, that they would leave a disabled vet homeless, and take away a senior citizen woman's only/main source of income. It says right in the article that the city could have accomplished it's goal, and also allowed these two people, to carry on with with their day to day. I'm very disappointed with our city's decision, and I wouldn't mind having a few words with our City Council members. A disabled veteran, now recovering from a liver transplant, and his little sheltie-type dog will have to find a new home, and a 70-year-old woman will lose her rental income, courtesy of the Detroit Lakes City Council. The veteran, Brian Fraser, choked up at the thought of giving up his dog while addressing the council. "I cannot afford to move," he told the council. "This place is the only home I have, I need my dog as well ... I'll lose him if I lose my home." In spite of pleas from him and the property owner, Laurel Carlson, a majority of aldermen voted Tuesday to reject Carlson's appeal and uphold a city staff decision to revoke her rental registration for a longtime rental unit at 327 Elizabeth Avenue. City council members could have opted to "grandfather in" the rental unit (Carlson said it's been a rental unit since 1945, and the zoning ordinance was passed in the late 1960s) which would have removed the biggest issue staff had with the property—that there are three residential dwellings on a 7,500-square-foot lot. (The first is Carlson's house at 325 Elizabeth Street, the second is the rental unit in her basement, and the third is the backyard unit opening onto the alley, with its own address, 327 Elizabeth.) The city's rental inspector found code problems at 327 Elizabeth - it needs more smoke detectors and newer electrical outlets—but nothing that couldn't have been fixed pretty easily. The biggest job would have been painting the exterior and adding a larger egress window in the bedroom. "I invested a great deal of money into these apartments in the last six years," with a new roof, new kitchen range, kitchen flooring, a shower and toilet, Carlson told the council. Other than a small monthly Social Security check, the rental units provide her only income, she said. "I'm 70 years old, alone, this would force three people into homelessness," she told the council. "In the end, who does it hurt? It's been there since 1945 and it's hurt no one." She has rented out the unit since she bought the property in 1979, she said. The rental inspection was made after a complaint by neighbors, Beth Olness and her husband, who own rental property of their own, all of which passed the first inspection without any code violations, they told the council. "We've been complaining to the city about that property for years," Olness told the council. "Finally somebody did something about it." She asked the council not to grandfather-in the property. Alderman Bruce Imholte agreed. "It's a tough situation for Mr. Fraser, we appreciate your service," Imholte said. "But one reason we hired a (rental unit) compliance officer is to bring them up to code. Staff has done their due diligence, they worked hard at this. While this is a hardship for these folks, I think we need to enforce these rules." Alderman Barb Voss (formerly Barb Schiller) passionately disagreed with Imholte. "This isn't a corporation, these are people's lives," she said. "He's a veteran, she's a woman who depends on the rental income. She's done this for 40 years." A visibly angry Imholte reminded Voss that they had discussed the matter earlier in committee, and he told a reporter he didn't want to see a story about how the city council threw a veteran out of his home. "This is not just me saying I want to throw a veteran on the street," he said. Alderman Ron Zeman suggested that the Detroit Lakes Housing Authority could perhaps find a new home for Fraser. At one point Mayor Matt Brenk seemed to lean towards finding a way to grandfather-in the rental unit, and city attorney Charles Ramstad explained the law and told council members they are essentially the judges in the matter and the decision was up to them. But the tide of council opinion went the other way. In the end, Voss voted against revoking Carlson's rental license, but the majority of the council voted to deny her appeal, although at Imholte's suggestion they gave Fraser until Dec. 31 to find a new home.
