<div>I grew up below the poverty line in Northern California, where strong public schools and social safety nets made my future possible. I became the first in my family to attend college, earning degrees from UC Berkeley and UC San Diego.

<div>My career took me from California classrooms to U.S. embassies across four continents, eventually serving as a Foreign Service Officer with USAID, where I worked to expand economic opportunity and strengthen democratic institutions.

<div>Last year, everything changed. When USAID was shut down and its staff laid off, my career in public service ended overnight. It was disorienting and difficult, but it also made something clear:<strong> it’s time to come home and serve the communities that shaped me</strong>.

From May through November 2026, I’ll gain the practical skills, mentorship, and network needed to step into leadership.

<div>As a first-generation college graduate and a Latina, I’ve spent my career in rooms that rarely reflected my background. Those experiences don’t just shape who I am – they shape how I’ll lead. <div>I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been accepted into the 7th cohort of the Lyndon B. Johnson Women’s Campaign School at the University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation’s most competitive leadership programs for women in politics.

<div>As a child, I checked out the same book about Dr. Martin Luther King, and it taught me two truths: leadership is service, and education opens doors. Those lessons have guided my life and my work.

<div>My "why" is rooted in deep personal experience, having observed my mother’s resilience while raising me at the young age of 14, as well as witnessing my father’s struggles with addiction and mental health challenges. These experiences have taught me important lessons about unconditional love, empathy, and compassion while also highlighting the importance of improving support systems for children and families like mine.

<div>Over the next few months, I will complete an intensive, hands-on curriculum in campaign strategy, fundraising, communications, voter outreach, compliance, and leadership. Taught by seasoned campaign professionals, elected officials, and media experts, the LBJ Women’s Campaign School provides practical tools, a campaign-ready plan, and access to a powerful mentorship and alumni network that helps women launch campaigns and step into leadership.

<div>I am honored to share that I have been selected for the LBJ Women’s Campaign School at the University of Texas at Austin. This is a program that prepares women to step into leadership roles and shape public policy.
</div>

</div>
<div>For nearly 20 years, I have worked in education, supporting students who are too often overlooked by the systems meant to serve them. I see firsthand every day how policy decisions directly impact student behavior, access, and opportunity, especially for Black and Brown students in underserved communities.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I think back to a student who was constantly being removed from class for his behavior. What I saw was not defiance, but a lack of support. No access to counseling, inconsistent interventions, and policies that focused more on punishment than understanding. That experience has stayed with me. It’s one of the reasons I am pursuing this work, because students like him deserve to be in schools that have systems that support students, not push them out.

<div>This program is more than a professional opportunity for me. It is a step toward being in the rooms where decisions are made, where I can advocate for policies to create a real, lasting change for the students and families I serve.

My path to leadership has been shaped by failure, pain, and the kind of lessons that only come from pushing through barriers that were never designed for me. As an immigrant who grew up in the United States, I’ve lived at the intersection of cultures, expectations, and identities. That experience gave me a unique lens — one that allows me to understand and speak for communities across this nation who often feel unseen or unheard. Growing up, I learned early that opportunity isn’t always given. Sometimes you have to build it. Sometimes you have to fight for it. And sometimes you have to become it. Through every setback, I found a deeper sense of purpose. Through every challenge, I discovered a clearer vision: to help build a better, more sustainable future for others. A future where communities aren’t isolated from one another but connected, empowered, and united. I overcame my own barriers by joining forces with others — by building strong alliances, by listening, by showing up, and by working alongside people who believe in a more inclusive and equitable democracy. Those relationships, those shared struggles, and those collective victories are what shaped me into the leader I am becoming. That is why the LBJ Women’s Campaign School means so much to me. It represents the next step in a journey that began long before I ever imagined myself in spaces like this. It’s an opportunity to sharpen my skills, expand my network, and bring back tools that will help strengthen the communities I serve — especially those who have been historically overlooked. This isn’t just about me. It’s about us. It’s about building bridges, amplifying voices, and creating pathways for the next generation of leaders who look like me, live like me, and dream like me. <div>Some stories don’t start in politics. Mine started in the soil. I was raised by parents who dedicated their lives to healthcare, and their parents before them worked the land as farmers. From both, I learned the same lesson: that showing up for your community, whether at a bedside or in a field, is not a career. It’s a calling.

<div>That calling has taken me through many chapters. I’ve worked as a somatic healer, a grief guide, a healthcare navigator, and a facilitator at A Stable Learning, where I use equine-facilitated learning to help people reconnect with themselves and each other. Every role has been rooted in the same belief: that every person deserves to feel seen, supported, and equipped to build the life they’re working toward.

<div>This week, I am heading to Austin to attend the LBJ Women’s Campaign School — and I need just a little more help to reach my goal.

<div>I’m a first-generation Mexican American and a proud product of public education. My family taught me to show up for others, and my schools helped shape my confidence, my voice, and what I believed was possible.

<div>I grew up in a home where the dinner table doubled as a community forum. Someone always needed help - navigating paperwork, finding a job, or understanding systems that didn’t always feel accessible. That stayed with me.

<div>Today, that same instinct guides my work in public service. I’ve sat with parents who feel overwhelmed advocating for their children and listened to concerns about resources, class sizes, and unequal opportunities. So I started doing what I’ve always done: bringing people together. Small conversations turned into spaces where families can share, learn, and take action.

<div>But I’ve learned that caring deeply isn’t always enough. Systems are complex—and often shaped by people with access to knowledge and networks I’ve had to build on my own.

<div>Over the past decade, I have built on this initial spark - volunteering with the American Legion Auxiliary's Texas Bluebonnet Girls State, working in a state legislator's office, and, currently, helping <a href="https://www.votewittliff.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Albert Wittliff</a>  a candidate I believe in, run for TX HD 129.

From Truck Driver to Decision Maker Help Me Get There

<div>I’m excited to share that I’ve been accepted into the next cohort of the Lyndon B. Johnson Women’s Campaign School at the University of Texas at Austin, one of the most competitive training programs for women in politics.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The LBJ Women’s Campaign School is a seven-month, hands-on program designed to train women to run for office and manage political campaigns. For me, this opportunity is more than just a program; it’s a chance to grow alongside a network of women who are committed to creating real change in their communities.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>For those who may not know my story, I didn’t always see myself in this space.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I grew up in Venezuela, where politics wasn’t something you talked about; it was something you experienced. My family moved to the United States when I was 15,  and I had to navigate a completely new environment while figuring out my future.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>As a first-generation college student, I started at community college and faced challenges early on, including taking developmental courses before transitioning into college-level work. It wasn’t easy, but it shaped my resilience and introduced me to mentors who encouraged me to step into leadership and find my voice.
</div>

<div><strong>That path led me to public service.</strong>

</div>
<div>What started as a hesitant step into a student organization quickly became a passion. Through programs like IGNITE, the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN), and New Leadership Texas, I found mentorship, community, and the confidence to step into spaces I never imagined myself in. Along the way, I was fortunate to earn scholarships that allowed me to continue pursuing these opportunities and investing in my growth.

<div>At 19 years old, I joined a political campaign and helped elect someone I deeply believed in to public office. That experience changed everything for me. It showed me that this work is real and that the people behind campaigns have the power to create meaningful impact in their communities.

<div>Since then, I have continued on a path to a career in public service, working on campaigns, supporting constituents, and building relationships across my community. From helping individuals navigate complex systems to contributing to efforts that shape entire elections, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to have leaders who truly care about the people they serve.
</div>

</div>
<div>Everything I’ve done so far, I’ve built from the ground up, seeking out opportunities, earning my place in rooms where decisions are made, and building a network rooted in service, community, and change makers (like you!). 
</div>

<div>I’m so excited to learn more political leadership skills so I can help elect leaders who prioritize people over politics.
</div>

<div>While I'm grateful to be accepted into the LBJ Women’s Campaign School, I have to be intentional about my financial decisions. I’m currently working to raise $2200 to help cover tuition and related expenses.

<li>Food: A donation of $25, $35, or $40 will help me pay for meals.

<div>I’m honored to share that I’ve been selected to attend the LBJ Women’s Campaign School at the University of Texas at Austin—a highly respected program that equips women to lead, influence policy, and step confidently into spaces where decisions are made.

<div>For over 15 years, I’ve been in the room with people on some of their hardest days—helping them navigate anxiety, trauma, relationship challenges, and life transitions. And what I’ve learned is this: many of the issues we treat in therapy don’t start in the therapy room…they start in systems. Systems that are under-resourced, misinformed, or simply not designed with people in mind.

<div>I think about the high-functioning professional quietly burning out and the teen mislabeled as “problematic”—both examples of patterns shaped by policies that fail to provide needed mental health support.

<div>That’s why this opportunity matters to me. Not just to show up—but to be effective in rooms where real decisions are being made. To bring a clinical lens, a community perspective, and a voice that understands both the emotional and practical realities people are living every day.
