<div>Samantha Hayes is a kind, curious, smart and funny 5 year old who loves swimming, taekwondo, coloring, dressing up like a princess, horses, and playing with her dog Woody. Like other kids her age, she is excited to start kindergarten soon! Sammie and her mother Sarah are starting the next phase of their incredible journey.

<div>Samantha has Cerebral Palsy caused by birth trauma. One of the big challenges at this stage of her life is the spasticity of her leg muscles. It impacts everything she does where movement is required - and let me tell you this kid likes to move! With spasticity, Samantha’s leg muscles contract uncontrollably and remain tight, resulting in Sam feeling pain and discomfort, walking on her toes (full ballerina style) and sometimes losing her balance and tumbling when she tries to move quickly. Because of her condition, Sammie regularly faces challenges that most kids her age don’t. She wears braces on her legs and endures painful inter-muscle injections. While many friends are enjoying days at the playground, Sam spends hours every week working hard with a physical therapist.

<div>After years of treatment, the family has researched other options to help improve Samantha’s quality of life. With the help of Sammie’s awesome care team, they learned that she is an ideal candidate for a specialized spinal surgery called selective dorsal rhizotomy. (This procedure has been performed on kids with CP with good success for over 30 years). The goal of the surgery is to improve quality of life for kids with spasticity caused by CP. In Sammie’s case, this means that if the surgery is successful, she’ll be able to walk with a more typical foot position, gait and range of motion.

<div>There are only a few Children's hospitals in the country that perform the 8-10 hour surgery, and Children's Hospital Colorado, Anschutz is outstanding. Samantha and Sarah recently had the chance to visit Children’s Hospital Colorado, Anschultz to meet the neurosurgeon, rehabilitation physician, physical therapist, child life specialist and other members of the team that care for kids before, during and after the procedure. They also toured the hospital and rehabilitation center and connected with other families whose children are in the rehabilitation phase following surgery. After this visit, they feel very confident that this surgery is the best choice for Sammie and all of her doctors agree.

<div>While they are grateful that Sammie is a candidate for surgery, the family is facing a long journey with a challenging recovery and a LOT of rehab. But they are hopeful that, with a lot of hard work, in 3-4 years, Sammie will be completely unencumbered, allowing her to live her life to the fullest :).

<div>Details: The surgery is set for November 2, and with her 6 week in-patient rehab immediately following, they are expected to be discharged December 23. Following their return to San Diego, the marathon continues with out-patient rehab 3x/week for the next 6 months. Samantha will be in a wheelchair and/or walker for 1.5-2 years after surgery as she learns how to walk again.

<div>Help needed: They are lucky to have health insurance, but it will only cover part of the costs of surgery, rehabilitation and other medical expenses. With temporary relocation to Denver, out-of-pocket medical expenses not covered by insurance, new medical equipment, retrofitting the house to accommodate medical equipment, time away from work, etc., the costs will be substantial. Sammie and her family are facing a bit of an uphill battle and could use support. Thank you for considering a contribution to help defray some of these costs. <div>When a parent has to make a decision like this it's never easy. Quality of life, being able to live without pain, stress and limitations should not be held up by financials. We all love this family and I want to do everything to make sure Sammie has the tools to grow and succeed in life. She's the smartest and sassiest human and I adore and love her. I know she is going to do amazing things in life and I can't wait to see what else she brings to this world.

<div>I wanted to take a moment to personally express my gratitude for all I've received. I’m incredibly humbled by the outpouring of love, prayers, calls, texts, visits and monetary assistance from friends, family and even from people I’ve never met- it all blows me away. Your efforts to encourage my healing, me staying the course and following doctors orders (not easy for the impatient me!) have all led me to a point where I can see light at the end of the tunnel.

<div>Tomorrow will be the first day I will be able to stand vertically on my own two feet for the first time in 2 1⁄2 months. (Special shout-out to Kristen Parsley from PT in Motion for lending her time and expertise.)  I will practice standing (only!) for two weeks, and then, I will start my rehab to learn to walk again. (I went to PHHS and UCLA, so I definitely have the stumbling part mastered.)  In all seriousness,  I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to even be at this point.

Our entire family is extremely grateful for all of the love, support and prayers you have been sending his way. It truly takes a village to get through something like this.

<div>I apologize for not updating this sooner but this past week we have been challenged with some insurance and hospital issues. In summary, he was erroneously discharged from Palomar trauma care and sent to Sharp Hospital. There have been a lot of finger-pointing and changes as to where to send him for skilled nursing. With that being said, he is in good care with Sharp until this is all worked out. We will hopefully know which skilled nursing facility this week. He will be there indefinitely until he is cleared for acute rehabilitation.

<div>He still can't put any weight on either leg and has to be very careful given his neck and back fusion. However, they have started a little bit of therapy with him since he has been at Sharp. It takes 2 physical therapists to get him into his plastic turtle suit and then work to get him into a wheelchair. He is no small human as you all know but he has been a trooper! He even wheeled down the hall the other day (at a 90-degree angle with his foot sticking out straight but he did it!). Even that little bit is exhausting. Randy has been an amazing patient and is determined to make some kind of progress each day. The staff loves him (shocker!) so he is making the most of his new friendships :)

<div>Once we get the information about where he will be, how long he will be there, his therapy plan, etc., I will update this once again. <div>On April 28th, Randy was in a horrible car accident while heading to lunch right around the corner from his office, where he ended up going down a 50 foot embankment. He sustained multiple injuries including a broken neck, back, ribs and leg. In addition, he blew out his right hip and has multiple facial lacerations. All 3 surgeries so far have included fusion of his spine with rods and pins, and also metal plates and pins in his right hip and left leg. To say he has a long road ahead is an understatement.

<div>Due to the nature of his injuries, his rehab will take longer than normal. The orthopedic surgeon said he might not be able to walk for 3 months since both legs are compromised and he can't start rehab for some time. Because of this, he will be out of work for awhile and lose a significant amount of wages. We are collecting funds to also help him with the mountain of medical bills and possibly the need for home health. Due to the fact he lives with his mom, it will be imperative that he has the proper help when he gets back home.

Randy Hennis

Kelly Barker is a single mom of two teenagers.  Three and a half years ago, Kelly was daignosed with breast cancer.  She was so strong and fought the disease like a true warrior.  She underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.  During her course, medical bills added up and this beautiful single mom lost her home.  Shockingly, three and a half years later, the cancer is back.  Not only was Kelly diagnosed with recurring breast cancer, melanoma was discovered on her leg.  Today Kelly undergoes a bilateral mastectomy and removal of the melanoma.  Kelly is one of the strongest women I know.  We know she  will win this fight with cancer but the financial battle will be a huge burden.  Kelly is self employed and therefor has no income if she is not working.  Please help Kelly and her two beautiful children through this financial hardship. Taking the financial burden away will allow her to focus on healing and postive energy.<br />  Go Team Kelly!!!
