Her sons Félix and Eugène brought their family and community together to honour their late mother and lay her to rest last week in Somba K’e [Yellowknife], NT.

<div>The family is accepting contributions from friends and family who are able to help support the many costs associated with hosting a reception and preparing an estate. Donations will support additional funeral costs, producing a public reception at the NWT Legislature building, and family travel to be in Somba K’e.

This narrative film is based on my own lived experience dealing with the social services system as a citizen living with manic depression, who also had a common law partner.

<div>Common Law is a family drama in which an Asian-Canadian man with manic depression struggles to survive in a world built to work against him. The film chronicles a turbulent time in our protagonist, Kagan's, life when he is rejected for disability benefits due to his common law status.

<div>Common Law is currently in pre-production and ready to go to camera in July 2023. The film is slated for festival release in October 2023. We have already secured 79% of the film budget, including support from the BC Arts Council, City of Vancouver, and the Kettle Friendship Society.

<div>My name is Kagan Goh. Originally from Singapore, I am a Vancouver-based Chinese Canadian multidisciplinary Mad Artist: award-winning filmmaker, published author, spoken word poet, playwright, actor, mental health advocate and activist. I was diagnosed with manic depression in 1993. I am making Common Law because I really want the world to understand the damaging effects of the stigma on mental illness. On top of the mental illness itself, the stigma adds to the hardship for people like me. The film dramatizes painful memories of family altercations and relationship breakups resulting from impersonal laws and government regulations, which further isolates and disenfranchises mental health survivors even more than they already are.

<div>Common Law is a short story adapted from my memoir, Surviving Samsara, which recounts my struggles with manic depression, and breaking the silence around mental illness, published by Caitlin Press in 2021. Surviving Samsara was shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize 2022 in the creative nonfiction in English category. FYI, I am currently in the process of adapting my memoir Surviving Samsara into a TV series. The proposed TV series is currently in development.

<div>I am the son of Goh Poh Seng—a doctor and Singaporean literary pioneer, poet, novelist, and playwright— similarly I discovered myself as a writer, returning time and again to the written word to express my emotions and experiences as I struggled with the exhilarating highs and frightening lows that characterize manic depression.

<div>My father, Goh Poh Seng, once predicted that the stories I was writing about my lived experience with mental illness, the life of our family, his struggle with Parkinson's disease, my mother, Margaret Joyce Wong's courageous struggle with terminal pancreatic cancer, my chronicling the East Van bohemian spoken word/slam poetry artistic scene on Commercial Drive our colourful and eccentric neighbourhood, our house on Victoria Drive and the back alley where I used to pick a bouquet of wildflowers for my girlfriend as I walked uphill back home singing love songs, McSpadden Park near our home where my mother used to sit on a bench from sunset to sundown chain-smoking cigarettes crying uncontrollably because she was the lone caretaker of her husband who had Parkinson’s, and her son who suffers from mental illness — all these stories I was writing my father predicted would make our house and neighbourhood famous one day so much so he predicted that there would be walking tours of our neighbourhood. Now with the successful publication of my memoir Surviving Samsara, the making of my upcoming film Common Law, and the possibility of the Surviving Samsara TV series, my father's predictions seem to be coming true!

<div>Today in the news and media with anti-stigma campaigns like Bell’s Let’s Talk, there is a lot of talk about society wanting to fight the stigma against people with mental illness. According to an article entitled “Tackling the stigma of mental illness among Asian men” by Douglas Todd: “Many men in North America feel pressure to succeed and provide for their families. Many men, as well as boys, fear being seen as weak. When they’re struggling emotionally, they often feel shame. It makes them reluctant to seek psychological help. What’s more, when the man is of Asian origin, all those factors are magnified. As a result, there can be a strong stigma in Asian-Canadian cultures against men dealing head-on with mental health difficulties, either their own or those of family members. But it’s been documented that men tend not to seek help as frequently as women. And that can be compounded for new Canadians and males of Asian background.

<div>It’s estimated roughly one out of four Canadians will at some time suffer from a form of mental illness. Since 43 percent of the population of Metro Vancouver has Asian origins, this problem is especially prevalent in B.C. The subject of this film is highly relevant to many people’s lives, not just those with a mental illness but also their friends, relatives and family. Mental illness is so widespread that no one’s life is untouched by it. Common Law tackles issues of stigma, discrimination and prejudice against people with mental illness, and makes tangible an experience that is typically internal and invisible.

As an Asian-Canadian man struggling with manic depression or bipolar mood disorder, by telling his story Kagan is breaking the silence of the taboo subject of mental illness prevalent within the Asian-Canadian community.

He has been fighting for almost five years to stop the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion (TMX) from being built. He is doing this for his family, the land, the water, the orcas – for all the animals and for all of us.

<div>Will is currently in jail serving a 28-day sentence for breaching a Trans Mountain Pipeline injunction. Efforts are being made to get him out of jail as he plans to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.

<div>“Canada” is continuing its long history of oppression and colonial violence towards Indigenous people. It continues to criminalize Indigenous people for defending their territory from destructive extractive projects.

<div>- TMX fuels the climate crisis by tripling oil piped from the tar sands when we need to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. TMX is also projected to lose the Canadian government at least $12 Billion.

<div>After a recent move to Atlanta, GA, and several years of working to detox her body from severe mold exposure, Deia developed a facial wound that would not heal. She has not been able to secure health insurance, and it took over half a year before she could see a doctor to biopsy the lesion and give her a formal skin cancer diagnosis. She is addressing issues appropriately through Functional Medicine. She now has some helpful health coverage via medical financial assistance through a hospital, but Functional Medicine will address the root causes of labs. However, this is out of pocket. Deia comes from a working-class/poor background. She needs help from her community and a larger web of connections to make it back to baseline.

Because I can feel pressure in addition to this small sore, and when I scroll back through selfies, I see this has been with me for over 14 months. I’m not going to wait until “sometime in 2023” to find out what additional impacts this could have on local structures. I am opting to raise funds while picking up extra work to pay for surgery out-of-pocket. Surgery is estimated between $1500 - $4,000, expected to be in the low range.

<div>I am calling upon my community for any financial help you can offer at this time; reluctantly because so many people are in need, and yet by isolating myself/ourselves from each other, we remove the traditional support structures that human communities have had for thousands of years. By reconnecting with each other, we can transform the issues we face in these times.

<div>After re-exposures to hidden indoor mycotoxins/mold, I have intermittent systemic flare-ups impacting my sinus, which seemed to coincide with this wound on my cheek. I’ve been unable to obtain health insurance, and with the delay in medical care, this cancerous nodule went under my radar. Finally, I reached a point to call a dear friend and Dr who sounded the alarm bells, then another dear friend to borrow money for a biopsy and diagnosis. I was left wondering how serious this is because it has gone on for a while, and I can feel it. But I don’t want people to worry about me. Basal Cell Cancer is mainly caused by sun exposure, rarely metastasizes and is treatable. Dr’s are advising a MOHs surgery which is very effective at removing BCC. I need help to get back to baseline healthwise and financially. I have a pre-op consult scheduled on August 24th, and I could have surgery as early as the end of August, which I have six months to pay off.

<div>I have temporary coverage by Mercy Care Atlanta, a clinic that primarily works with unhoused people and has a sliding scale for folks like me who are falling between the cracks. Thankfully Mercy has already covered bloodwork, a dermatologist consult, an allergy clinic, and is associated with a hospital that could perform the surgery with a MOHs surgeon-in-residency. However, my doctor informed me that it could be a long wait. I am concerned about what risks that waiting this long can pose. I am hoping to raise money to at least cover accumulated medical experiences and, after the 24th, to possibly cover the surgery by the end of August so that I can get rid of this cancer as soon as possible.

<div>I am one of tens of millions of people who lack health insurance. It is predominantly low-income womyn and womyn/people of color who are ‘‘ineligible’ and often uninsured. Because we are more likely to be low-wage workers in industries that don't offer benefits, job-based coverage fails poor &amp; working-class people. The coverage I do have will change status as soon as I pick up additional work.

<div>Truck drivers from minority communities do have real struggles, which they would have also brought to the government, if they were consulted. South Asian males are disproportionately affected by the drug toxicity crisis and new immigrants have struggled with unpaid wages and exploitation. In a recent Globe and Mail article, Jagroop Singh said, "“Inflation is hitting us hard. Drivers are quitting every day. Trucking companies are folding every day. The cost of trucking is increasing every day, but truckers are still expected to work at rates they were paid back in the 1980s. In fact, truckers in the Fraser Valley held a rally in January, to highlight unsafe road conditions they are facing on B.C. highways. Truckers had started a rally in Surrey sometime back around improvements to the roads, the highways going to the Fraser Valley, [but] the movement that they were trying to get attention to was just totally overshadowed by this one.

Support Canada's real, struggling truckers

<div>This is an urgent fundraising appeal on behalf of the Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs and supporters, who in February 2020 answered the call to the people of Canada to uphold the Aboriginal title of the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs whose unceded traditional territories were being encroached upon by the Coastal Gas Link Pipeline. Many Gitxsan felt obligated to act, as for millennia they have been allies of the Wet’suwet’en and had formed a modern alliance in defense of the traditional lands of the Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en in the Delgamuukw/Gisday Wa court case.

<div>I, Chief Spookw, Norman Stephens of the Lax Gibuu (Wolf) clan and many others set up a blockade on a major highway and railway running through the town of New Hazelton, which is on my unceded traditional territory. Subsequently, we were arrested and identified in the legal case, “Canadian National Railway v. John Doe and Persons Unknown”. This is before the courts with the next appearance on December 6, 2021. The legal costs of this case are outstanding and growing.

Lee Maracle touched us all through her brilliant writing, mentoring, and generous ways she helped build understanding towards a just future for Indigenous Peoples.  Tragically, we have lost Lee and we want to ensure that her family are now cared for as they support Lee's spiritual journey home to her ancestors, knowing her children and grandchildren are also well.  Lee tragically passed away at Surrey Memorial Hospital on November 11, and her passing has been expressed across the land, sharing Lee's work with millions more Canadians. Grandchildren will also be supported with travel costs.<br /><br />Additional funds raised will support Columpa and Tania who are newly back on the westcoast and will have much adjustment and tending to do for Lee's affairs. If additional funds are raised this will provide for cultural work so Lee's legacy and enormous contributions over the decades is known by both lndigenous youth and Canadians far and wide. Lee lifted our spirits, made us laugh, and challenged us to consider many truths often left aside. She mentored many writers and helped people to believe in themselves. Lee's contributions to the much-needed conversations towards justice and understanding are immeasurable. May we all carry these gifts with gratitude and a commitment to continue her important work. <p>Dillon is a brother, a son, a nephew, and a cousin to many. We are a large family, connected to one another in an expansive web. Dillon highly valued family, communicated often with his sisters who haven't heard from him since his disappearance, and suddenly losing all contact with him is jarring.

Having some financial support means the family can have some breathing room as they process and fight to find answers and bring Dillon home.

This charge is clearly an attempt to silence one of our frontline leaders, just as Trans Mountain tries once again to step up construction after a series of delays (including a month-long pause due to safety concerns on their worksites).

Loving son of Sheryl Kootenhayoo.<br /><br />Taran is from Cold Lake, Alberta and Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation. He resided in Vancouver, BC. He was a very active member of the community and as many of you all know, brought laughter and light to everyone's lives. Loved by all who knew him, hearts all across Turtle Island are heavy and share in grieving our beautiful brother and friend. There are no words that can equal the amount of loss that will be felt by his absence as we all miss him. We ask that you light a candle or smudge and pray for him on his journey to join the ancestors. <br /><br />If you would like to send an offering of support, it is graciously accepted with love. <br />The funds raised will go to supporting the final arrangements to bring him home to Alberta and lay our beloved Taran to rest. Dear Friends and Allies,<br /><br />On Friday Aug 16, 2019, Rita was sentenced to 28 days in prison by the BC Supreme Court. She, alongside other brave water and land protectors, have been taking a stance on unceded Coast Salish Territories against the Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline. This work is being done with Indigenous communities and allies to resist colonial imperialism and to achieve climate justice.  <br /><br />Legal proceedings have been ongoing since her arrest on Burnaby Mountain on Aug 24, 2018.  Rita’s legal representation mounted a defense of climate necessity, which was rejected by judge Kenneth Affleck.<br /><br />Rita has tirelessly worked for decades in solidarity with and toward justice for the most under-served members of communities; locally, nationally and abroad. Her generosity has been experienced by countless people. As friends and allies, Hiromi and Lee wanted to set up this fund so that we could give back to Rita a little of what she has shared with so many. There is an existing group legal defense fund set up for water protectors. But it has a $5000 individual cap. We know Rita—it’s very unlikely she’s drawn heavily from a communal fund. Lawyer fees are high. And there are always other costs to doing the work that Rita does. If any of you have the capacity to donate toward Rita’s legal fees it is greatly appreciated. Legal Defense Funds for Rita Wong

In April 2019, I broke my ankle walking towards my car, on the sidewalk. I was enroute to my contract work to share Indigenous knowledge with children in Richmond, for an arts based program. I have recently been told I require another surgery to remove the metal in my leg due to a seriously intense infection that almost killed me, and could have resulted in amputation.  I am grateful to the medical teams from the two Hospitals I am attending for surgery and the IV antibiotics treatment. I am extremely grateful to the West Vancouver Ambulatory Clinic as they do weekly care on my wound and change the tubing and other aspects of my Antibiotics IV, weekly as well. I have had to quit everything I had for planned for a total of 6 months. I gave up training Indigenous youth in Ontario in VR and I gave up a few arts and culture residencies this spring and summer. I gave up my seasonal work with Takaya Tours, which is my favourite work because it encompasses everything I love! The salty sea air and beautiful salt waters, Plant walks daily, storytelling and meeting people from so many places. Ugh. I have also had to withhold from doing anything that could cause my wound to become re-infected. That means no swimming, no canoeing, no hiking in the forest, no berry picking, and the list goes on. I’m almost healed up from this infection, but I need to undergo a second surgery to remove the metal so I can fully heal from this infection. I have been been unemployed since April. I had to move to my mom’s place to heal and in order to access homecare from my community, so as not to burden my elderly mother. I have managed to continue supporting my family despite not working, and due to most of my payments coming in anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 months after I did the contract work I have been barely surviving on, and usually thrive on. I have to wait another 6-8 weeks to heal, and I’m barely surviving on my credit card, the line of credit from my community credit union and the few tiny honorariums I have received through minor short gigs I have been able to do with the injury taking so much of my energy and time to heal. I really need to catch up to my bills, as well as to continue to support my family until I get back to work in September. I finally agreed to do this as a result of finding myself really stressed and trying to not submit to depression from not being able to work at all. I usually tend to donate to everything I can, alongside supporting my community through food security projects that help others access traditional  foods, etc. I finally realized that I am out of resources to stay on top of this health situation that has continued to get worse before it got better. Anything that can help me stay on top of this will be greatly appreciated.No amount is too small. Or large. Lol Honestly, I’m not the best at asking for help, it took a number of people in my life who truly care about me to say it. I truly appreciate the support. Even words of kindness and so on. Cease Wyss:Healing From A Broken Leg + 2 Surgeries

As some of you may be aware, Musqueam warrior, environmentalist, MMIW advocate and community leader, Audrey Siegl, has suffered consecutive extreme loss, grief and trauma.<br /><br />To qualify, this is not counting the intergenerational indigenous trauma of surviving colonialism and the acute situational trauma of her own life as an indigenous woman.<br /><br />Audrey has had two full years of unimaginable sadness.<br /><br />During her 2+ yr time working as a healer and helper to some of Turtle Island's most grief stricken communities, her mother &amp; sister died of fentanyl poisoning. After the loss of her mother, almost 2yrs to the day, Audrey’s only beloved sibling, her sister and best friend died of Fentanyl poisoning.<br /><br /><br />These bookend deaths of the closest women in her family, along with other complications and traumas that have fallen on her, have made us recognize that we need to step up and offer supports at this time.<br /><br />Audrey has been the visible and actionable leader of multiple rallies &amp; movements and is a renowned speaker and advocate. We have many battles ahead where her energy is needed.<br /><br />We ask people to dig deep and give back to Audrey for the myriad of ways she has fearlessly and lovingly continued to support us, all of us, as we rise to protect women and the water and land.<br /><br />Literally, any amount that you can share would serve to illuminate and affirm that Audrey’s years of sacrifice and community stewardship has not gone unnoticed and or unappreciated .  <br /><br />Audrey has always supported herself and on top of that, has done thousands of volunteer hours. She has never asked for personal support before.<br /><br />This is being done on her behalf, with her permission, by her community who love and support her.   We want nothing more than for her to be able to rest, heal and get whatever treatments/supports she may need during her acute grief.<br /><br />As per GoFundme's requests for transparency, i need to include that I, Sara Cadeau , reside in the Vancouver area and am in daily contact with Audrey as her friend. Also, she has requested and fully authorised me to administer this account's funds to 1) directly pay for anything related to her healing or 2) personal and household needs as she discerns and see's fit and requests.  The process of transfer of funds will be accounted for and is seen  as gifted from the community.  I am fully accountable to both Audrey and the community we both serve, who raised this money for her healing time and needs.<br /><br />Her expenses will be paid by me whenever possible and will be given to her directly  at her request and documented between us internally. The total raised and amount is openly available to her and the community who raised it,  visible through this forum.<br /><br />As i mentioned in the "update" the account and my role as an administrator remain completely transparent to Audrey and the community we both serve.

Help us independantly publish our <strong>First Aid Manual for Community Paramedics</strong>! <br /><br /> We're the <a href="https://brigada43salud.wixsite.com/brigada43" target="_blank"><strong>Community Health Brigada 43</strong></a>  (Brigada de Salud Comunitaria 43) based in Tixtla, in the state of Guerrero, Mexico. <br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/27789146_1518920281.0217_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br /><br />For over three years now, <strong>we've been organizing to make holistic health care eventually available to all in the region of Tixtla</strong>. We're a grassroots group primarily made up of Indigenous, campesina women and also of teachers, historians, doctors, paramedics, and others. Our work is based on communitary <a href="https://brigada43salud.wixsite.com/brigada43/english" target="_blank"><strong>principles</strong></a>  and prioritizes Indigenous cosmovision. Our structure is horizontal and none of the members of the Brigada are paid for their work. We sustain our work mostly through donations and small economic self-sustaining projects. In these workshops, we share knowledge and skills necessary to train first responders in very resource limited contexts. The workshops cover medical emergencies that unfortunately are quite common in Tixtla and other regions of Guerrero and Mexico: various types of accidents, dehydration due to poor nutrition and heat exposure, and different kinds of lesions produced by situations of violence. Given the lack of institutional health care services in many of these areas, we believe that it is vital to train those most affected in order to reduce the morbidity and mortality of these medical emergencies. <br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/27789146_1518920484.7457_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br /><strong><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/27789146_1518920517.8181_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />We've already begun seeing results of the training</strong> - various community members and compañeros who have taken the training have been able to meaningfully intervene in different situations requiring first aid. These small changes can be huge in a context where <strong>less than fifty percent of the population has access to health care services</strong> and where that access is made even more difficult given the lack of medical professionals, diagnostic tools, material, treatment, and discriminatory practices. The accessibility to health care services is also one of the many aspects of every day life that has been affected by the extreme levels of violence in the state in recent years; Guerrero is now listed as the state with the highest number of violent homicides in Mexico. <br /><br /><strong>What is the Manual we’re asking you to help us publish?</strong><br /><br />In these past years of work in Guerrero, we’ve come up against a real barrier of lack of study and review material for folks in rural communities – centered on their concrete realities and needs. So, we decided to put down in writing, through months of work, all of the material we give during our first aid courses. We combined our experience in Guerrero with updated criteria, protocols and recommendations from various first responder, emergency medicine and trauma courses and adapted it all in accessible language for folks who don’t necessarily have previous health care or emergency training. The manual contains <strong>17 chapters</strong> with lots of color, diagrams and pictures and covers everything from basic anatomy and physiology and vital signs to control of hemorrhages to psychological first aid in extreme situations. <br /><br /><strong>How can you help us get this Manual published?</strong><br /><br />So this is why we’re asking for donations. The manuscript is finished. A team is working on the final edits. The challenge now is putting together the amount needed to print 1000 manuals – <strong>a total of 5000 Canadian dollars is needed and our goal is to raise it before June 2018</strong>. <br /><br />We’re asking folks to make <strong>at least a 20 dollar donation</strong> – with this amount we’ll be happy to<strong> include your name (or collective or org’s name) in a list of supporters</strong> that will be included in the manual. <br /><br />Your donations will not only make printing the manual possible – they help us get the book to folks who have already taken the training or will in the future but don’t have the means to pay for material to help them study and review afterwards. Community Health First Aid Manual 

<strong>Bring Anton home!</strong><br /><br />Anton Pilipa is a long time anti-poverty activist and member of radical communities in Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto. In 2012, during a prolonged struggle with mental health illness, he suddenly disappeared. He was not seen or heard from for nearly 5 years and his family and friends were devastated with worry. <br /><br />Then, at Christmas 2016 his family received word through social media -- Anton was homeless and wandering the highways and towns of northern Brazil.<br /><br />Throughout the month of January, Anton's brother Stefan did the work of arranging to bring him home, rounding up identification, a passport, and arranging travel permissions and flights.  This work has been very expensive and is straining the resources of this working class family.  This is a call out for friends and communities that care about Anton, who have been supported and impacted by his work, to step up and support him. We need financial support to bring him home and to help him settle, recover, and get healthy near his family in Toronto.<br /><br />The costs of bringing Anton home are high. The cost of his flight is $1600, hospital and consular fees are $2000, and a couple months rent in Toronto will be around $3500. We are also asking for some money to offset the costs of Stefan's last-minute round-trip flight to Brazil, without which Anton could not be coming home.<br /><br />Please contribute what you can and share this callout with those who know Anton.

This September James 'Sasquatch' Fleming was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a form bone cancer. Doctors are treating tumours in his ribs and spine with 4 months of aggressive chemotherapy and radiation. He will be receiving stem cell treatment in February 2017. This procedure will make him extremely ill. Multiple Myeloma is considered an incurable form of cancer. James is fighting to kick it into remission.<br /><br />James is beloved by many people in his communities of the Sunshine Coast, East Vancouver and Steveston, BC. Husband to Marie, father to six children and two dogs, grandfather to one, Sasquatch is known for helping anyone with whatever is asked of him. Day or night, rain or shine, he will gladly open his doors and his family to invite people in to share his house, food, music or barbering skills. <br /><br />James and Marie have both stopped working as the treatments have left him exhausted. He has devotedly provided so much for everyone, our hope is that the community, friends and family will be able to return the support in any way possible and love him during this first phase of treatment.
