<div>Pro cyclist Joel Kyaviro grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo (the DRC) amid the bloodiest civil war that the world has seen since World War II–amid an ongoing conflict that has so far killed six million people. His childhood was difficult. A bomb hit his family’s home when he was 10; his brother was killed. But he trained through the mayhem, and in 2023 he made it onto the Black Mamba Development Squad, a vaunted East Africa racing team, and began earning a stipend sufficient to pay his daily expenses. The same year, he became the DRC’s road racing champion.

<div>Joel is 22. Last month, in his home city of Goma, he founded Tumaini Academy, aimed at training the DRC’s next generation of cycling stars. Tumaini means “hope” in Swahili. Forty kids are involved, 27 boys and 13 girls. They convene four times a week and they share six bikes. “When one kid finishes a lap,” Joel says, “another takes the bike and continues.

<div>“Most of the children come from very poor families,” Joel says. “Some are living in orphanages or care centers, mainly in neighborhoods heavily affected by the war here in Goma. They are struggling academically, so part of our vision is to provide them with school support alongside their cycling training.”

<div>With $2,600, Tumaini Academy can buy the following: four used entry-level road bikes, enough to build a small racing team; two or three used mountain bikes; and also some much-needed helmets, jerseys and shoes.

<div>[A side note: It’s not really possible to send used bike gear to the DRC. The freight costs are prohibitively expensive.]

<div>When Bren and his wife Catherine moved from Portland and began to build their life in Bethlehem, he reconnected with his roots - kicking it with the other old heads down at the local skate park. Bren and Catherine started attending the weekly board meetings and got involved with the development efforts to modernize the skate park and expand its role as a community gathering spot. Toward that goal I am raising funds in Bren's honor, on behalf of my sister Catherine in order to support the development efforts of the Bethlehem Skate Park and and see the project to completion.

<div>One of every avid cyclist's worst nightmares happened to our friend David on December 6th, 2022.

<div>A motorist who was having severe road rage, ran over David's leg as he was attempting to get off the road and out of their way. The driver doubled back and tried to hit David <em>again</em> head-on after he'd tried to ride around the neighborhood looking for the car after the driver sped away.

<div>This was a hit-and-run incident. The Oakland Police Department has been less than helpful - there isn't much chance of catching the offending driver.
</div>

<div>After x-rays and an MRI, it was revealed that the incident left David with a severely fractured tibial plateau in his right leg. His next check-in with his care team at Kaiser in Oakland, CA is on 1/26, where he may or may not be cleared to start bearing weight on his right leg, start physical therapy, and begin the rest of the healing process.

<div>Unable to work from home, this unexpected accident has depleted David's savings. Temporary disability insurance is currently 'denied' due to a clerical issue with his doctor's office so money is quickly becoming an issue.

Help David Wilcox Recover from Hit and Run

On February 16th,  a house fire in Sugar Land, Texas ended with the tragic loss of three beautiful children and their grandmother.  Colette (5), Edison (8), and Olivia (11) will forever be remembered by their parents Jackie and Nathan, families, and friends as joyful, eternal sources of light and wonder.<br /><br />If you choose to donate, please let us know how you are connected with a comment. This fundraiser is organized with Jackie's involvement and approval by volunteers from the Rice and Topl Community. The goal of these funds is to honor Olivia, Edison, and Colette with a lasting foundation.<br /><br />A few words from Jackie:<br /><br />Thank you all for your outpouring of love and support. We really appreciate everyone’s kindness and willingness to help at this time. There isn’t much we need at the moment but we recognize that we are overwhelmed right now. When the dust settles, we will need you. So, thank you in advance.<br /><br />As far as contributions and support right now, we know that we want nothing more than to honor our children’s lives and legacy. That said, we’ve quickly realized that there are a number of options to consider that we are just unprepared to think through all that right now. Our friend, neighbor, and brother Darryl Tatum passed away on January 29, 2021, at the age of 55. Darryl was a beloved fixture in Union Square, Somerville, and now we want to give back. <strong>Now in our third year, WTF Bikexplorers is asking the community to help expand and increase financial funding for the SJ Brooks Scholarships.</strong> The more funds we raise will allow us to offer more scholarships. At this time, it is our goal to give each recipient $2000 to go toward a spirited bicycle endeavor. Recipients will choose their own endeavor and have complete discretion over how they use their funds.  In addition, some recipients will receive a bicycle and/or gear support from sponsored donations. Bicycles and gear support will be based on the recipient’s financial need. <br /><br /><br /><strong>In 2017, WTF Bikexplorers was founded to create a movement toward more connection, gender inclusivity, and racial equality within the bicycle adventure community.</strong> Our mission is to support, celebrate, and connect communities who identify as non-binary, transgender, femme, and/or women who use their bicycles to explore (be it the outdoors, themselves, each other, or the world we live in). One of the ways we carry out this mission is by offering five annual scholarships. In an effort to grow and support a more inclusive and diverse community, these scholarships help lessen the financial and material barriers to travel by bicycle. We ask for your help in expanding the SJ Brooks Scholarship Fund for 2020. <br /><br /><br /><strong>We recognize that the outside is not free. A community organizer, beloved by many, SJ was the founder of the Seattle chapter of Friends on Bikes, a social cycling group for BIPOC who identify as women, trans, femme, or non-binary. SJ was scheduled to speak about Friends on Bikes as part of the queer people of color panel at the 2018 WTF Bikexplorers Summit in August. On May 19, 2018, SJ was fatally attacked by a cougar while biking just outside Seattle. SJ's death was a massive loss to the cycling community. They were a positive light who worked tirelessly to create change. By naming the scholarships after SJ, we hope to honor and pass on their legacy to future bikexplorers.

WTF Bikexplorers SJ Brooks Scholarship Fund

As some of you may or may not know, Tamara hasn’t been feeling good at all for over a week now, we went to an instacare where they told us it was just a bad cold and sent us home, ignoring us when telling them that she has had bad colds before and her stomach does not hurt like this normally. <br />Than early Thursday morning we took her into the ER because her stomach pain was keeping her up all night and making her loose her stomach. They too told us that they thought it was just some kind of virus.<br />Finally on Saturday we went and saw a family friend who was a pediatrician, he seemed way more concerned, full taking into account the fact that we know Tamara the best as the stomach pain is very out of the usual. He sent us back for more X rays and blood work, Finally Saturday evening we get a call back informing us that her white blood cell count and ERS levels were very high and irregular and advising us to go back to ER and have them take another look. <br />By late Saturday night we found out that she had a ruptured appendix and needed surgery right away. <br /><br />The surgery went very well and she is already on a good path to recovery, we are hoping to be out of the hospital in the next day or two. <br /><br />Although we do have health insurance and I'm sure they will cover some of it. (Still not sure how much) I'm sure our bill is going to be racking up as the days move on. I will also be adjusting that price as we find out more on how much we will owe. <br /><br />I do not want people to feel like they are just giving us money, nor do I wish to just ask for money. <br />I plan on making a series of silk screens to send out to everyone that donates. <br />If you donate $1.00 or more you will receive one of the prints, if you donate $50.00 you will get two and if you donate $100.00 you will get all three. <br /><br />Thank you for taking time to read this whole deal and for all of your love and help though this whole thing.
