<div>My name is Gagandeep Singh, and I left India in April 2021 with the hope of earning a better future for my family. I chose to go to Ukraine, not because it was easy, but because it was the only option I could afford — getting a visa there was manageable, and I was determined to start working and support my loved ones.

<div>Back then, my family was already struggling. We had taken a loan of €10,000, and the interest burden was crushing us. My father is a heart patient, and due to his weak heart, he’s no longer able to work. I was doing everything I could to help ease the pressure — every euro earned meant a little relief back home.

<div>But then, the war broke out.
</div>

</div>
<div>In March 2022, I lost everything — my job, my savings, my security — and barely escaped with my life when the Russia-Ukraine war began. It was terrifying. I somehow made it to Portugal, hoping to rebuild from scratch.

<div>It took time, but I eventually found work. Since then, I’ve been working hard, sending money home, and trying to keep our family afloat. My younger brother is also working in India and helping as much as he can. But life here isn’t easy — salaries are low, expenses are high, and I have no savings left after surviving, starting over, and handling immigration documentation (which is still ongoing and costly).

<div>Now, we’ve reached another turning point — my brother wants to get married next year, but we simply can’t afford it. We had to postpone everything due to the lack of funds. I can’t even travel to be with them, as I’m still waiting for my travel documents.

<div>What hurts the most is seeing my family constantly stressed and depressed due to the never-ending debt and emotional weight. This debt isn't just financial — it’s stealing our peace of mind and draining our hope.
